I phone main Archdeacon Fortin Rector of holy Trinity sees signs of broadening spirit in religious bodies. Veil. Archdeacon Fortin l .u., resumed his pulpit or holy Trinity Church yesterday morning and preached an eloquent Sermon which dealt with the movement toward Church Union. Tak ing his text from Malachi iii., is they that feared the lord spake often one to the other the reverend gentleman remarked that no doubt in those far off Days before Christ there were synods and conferences being held by the people of god. The great shortcoming of christians in modern times was that they Seldom met or spoke one to another concerning spirit Ual affairs. This reticence had been a great deteriorating Factor in the Christian Community. Referring to the great world s missionary conference held recently in Edinburgh and to the anglican conference now taking place at Halifax and also the roman Cath Olic Congress at Montreal and various other similar meetings the speaker emphasized the fact that they were All significant of the better spirit that permeated the Christian Church. Clashing to disappear. The clashing and overlapping in the work on the missionary he said will soon disappear in the presence of this new spirit and there will be reciprocity and better understanding and co operation among the various religious bodies. Although there was no representative of the Koman Church at the Edinburgh meeting yet the letter read from the Bishop of Cremona Olio is an intimate Friend of the Pope was significant of the broader spirit that is making itself apparent in the Catholic Church. And although anglicans did not agree with the doctrine of the roman Catholic Church yet they must concede that catholics were in their own Way striving toward the Lish ment of Unity in the Church of Christ. This spirit of Church Union that pervades the various religious bodies at the present time is Ideal and Christlike and is a sign of the times. The conference at Edinburgh was remarkable in Many ways and it served to stimulate and urge the people to wards the Conquest of the evangelical Progress. Adams preach on the subject of dancing among methodist Church members a subject which has been very much to the fore recently by reason of the fact that the meth Odist conference at Victoria decided to remove the Well known footnote which banned the practice of dancing among the Church members. The removal of this the preacher said. Caused a consider Aole stir and comment throughout religious circles generally. The question which naturally arises is will the re Moval of the prohibitive footnote be As injurious to the spiritual welfare of methodism As Many have expressing a Frank opinion the pastor remarked. Now personally i do not believe it will. The tendency Nowa he said was not favourable to the subscribing to certain formulas it was resolving itself More and More into one question. Are you willing to accept Christ at your personal Saviour and example is his Way the Way you want to Evev difficult question. In his opinion never could the Church a More difficult question to the people. Instead of letting Down the bars the were by that question for after All the Christian life was not merely a matter of adherence to certain rules. Discussing question As to whether the deletion of the footnote would affect seriously and in an Unspiritual manner the methodist Church the Rev. Adams pointed that for Yeara the footnote had been broken by methodists. At least during Many years he had not known of a single member of the Church who had been brought to Book for it Althoughwas no secret that they had practice the thing which was prohibited. Lixe above footnotes. A word of warning was spoken How Ever by the preacher. " with the in creasing luxury which is appearing in j All classes of society he said the tremendous Appeal there is at the present time not Only to the Young to the Middle aged As Well for amusement and distraction we Are in danger of sinking Back again into a refined in conclusion he said. The removal of the footnote will have nothing to do with the Church s spirituality.
