Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - December 13, 1910, Winnipeg, Manitoba Manitoba free press Winnipeg tuesday december 13, 1910. Western farm troubles of the Doyule Vatos Farmers at Dauphin not with some phases of govern ment operation Dauphin dec. Tho Annua meeting Oths Grain growers association of the Dauphin municipality Ivas Lif Clcil Here in the trades Hall o Saui riia Many important matter were discussed among which was the of Competition in buying Stree in the town of Dauphin. Of. The elevators in the town two Art a government elevators which buy m wheat and Only handle Carload lots of the Farmers. The bins in these Eleva tors Are bins and upon the 1 Armer applying for a bin he is allotted which is at his disposal for fifteen Days. The wheat when brought m a the Farmer is supposed to be cleaner. By the before being put in the special bin which has been allotted of his wheat alone and for tyls a charge of cents per Bushel is made by the government to cover cleaning storage and loading and an additional charge o a per Bushel for every exceeding Ftp teen Days that the wheat remains in i h bin. This of course renders it absolutely impossible for a private buyer to buy Small loads of wheat on the Street and store in the government elevators As he might not be Able to make up a Carload of a particular Grade for u. Month or two because the Farmers had not brought in enough of that parti Cular Grade. The. Result is that at the present time the Only remaining ele Vator has everything its own Way and can practically pay the Small Farmer what they choose As he Lias other Means of disposing of his wheat. Case were stated where Farmers had brought in loads of wheat to sell and were in to do so As the private elevator was not buying wheat that Day. This caused annoyance As some of the Farmers had sickness in their Homes and needed the Money to get supplies in town. These facts were brought out by the implication of h. P. Nicholson a prominent Farmer and real estate broker in that District who asked for a Resolution to be passed by the association recommending the government to Grant certain concessions to private individuals engaged in the Stree buying of whereby they could have a longer period in loved latin to keep wheat in a bin at the initial of per Bushel. When asked As to just what concessions he required he re plied that he was in no to to Taie offhand but made a motion that at the next regular meeting of the ass i Tiou he move a Resolution to Aid Street buying the government elevators. This meeting has been called for saturday. December 24, stun if or. Nicholson s concessions Are deemed advisable a Resolution will be passed to its effect and forwarded to the Secretary of the want too Grain association which holds its annual convention at Brandon in Jan uary. It is hoped t hat the matter will be taken up by the convention and some arrangement arrived at Between them and the government whereby the government elevators can be used to assist Small Farmers in the disposal their wheat. Bad management of elevators. Another phase of the elevator ques Tion discussed was the operation of the government elevators. Almost every Man present who had shipped through them had some cause of complaint or the other Aga list them. The facilities for cleaning the wheat were practically lie no a. Was dec have been clean when shipped to Winnipeg it was invariably docked from two to three per cent for uncleaned wheat. The bins als a came in for their share of censure As Well As the management of the elevator. M. C. Lee stated that the had shipped a car Load of wheat through the elevators and upon getting his weighing Bill had Given them a note for the expenses for handling of the wheat to be paid in Winnipeg the Grain was sold. A Short while after wards they had applied to him again for the charges of handling the wheat and asked what had become of ills note replied that it had been sen to Winnipeg and they had lost track of it Down there. He refused to pay till the note was returned to him and there the matter stood. Several stated that when they had got their final weights from Winnipeg there was a loss of anywhere from 4 to 5 bushels of wheat and upon application to the head Oralce in Winnipeg had immediately received for the amount while others who had done exactly the same had received no reply it All. H. Thompson was one of the men who receive a reimbursement for his loss in weight and a. Maynard those who had not. G. Strang. The president of the association had a different experience to relate. He shipped a car Load through the government elevators and upon receipt of weight and Check from Winnipeg found that his Grain had gained 5 bushels and 4 pounds since it passed to the hands 01 the government elevators. He accepted the Money and a Feriv weeks later after those had suffered a Liss had complained he rec ived a. Titter from the Winnipeg office to the Lect that Thuy had heard that he had received payment larger num Ber of bushels than he had put into Tho elevator and that in View of the tact that shortages had occurred in shipments to other parties they hoped that he would refund the extra amount he courteously replied that he paid for the privileges of the us5i a special bin for his own use and that therefore All the wheat in that bin belonged to him and that he refused to pay. There the matter still stands. J. Natilli another Farmer who had bushels of wheat this fall upon application to the elevator agent for current prices of wheat and space was Cut off very shortly with the reply that he could not give prices and that he did. Not care to. That is he cared to Load a Isar he Aind take his Chance with the rest. Needless to say or. Neil did not patronize the govern ment elevators. Officers elected. The election of officers for he ensuing year a so took place and those appointed were president g. Strang by acclamation. Vice president h. N. Thompson. Directors l. Mckillop m. C. Lee j. A. Campbell a. Maynard w. A. Armstrong and j. Lockwood. Banner year for . Farmers record yields established by country to the in total value. Animals of that age Are eligible to such competitions and a Champion is the one that is Best of the lot right at the minute but at the International last week show Yard traditions were sadly shattered by the unprecedented return of calf champions in four Bullock sections and a grand Champion that had just passed ten months of age. I to have tended steadily toward baby beef for some years. A great Gulf Rolls Between front Cham pions and the Black calf signally Hon ored last week. But veal is not beef and it is wholly impractical that our markets should be supplied with veal. An immaturity attaches to such an award that is not acceptable to conservative minded men. Just How much better should a calf be than a matured animal in order to warrant a championship award it is Safe to say that thoughtful judges have for years Pon dered this question and the Youngs ter has been required to prove his claims right conclusively against matured excellence. In the Light of Tho extraordinary decisions rendered last coincidences but nevertheless discussion of this topic is invited. Now that Breed honors Are Hereford a shorthorn and an Angus having won through to final Bullock question can at least be discussed dispassionately and free All Breed Bias. We Oan consider the claims of Early maturity for All three Breeds substantiated by the purple ribbon record and free from Breed Bias debate the question As to just How much better a calf should be to win Over a matured animal.
