About Krawchenko no plans of escape were discussed., Reid simply relating that he was sure Krawchenko had a gun which Reid said had been brought into the cell Struj ppe d to his stomach by a Belt. . Bonnar by a. Few searching questions. Revealed that when. Buxton gave his evidence on former Occas ions he told How Reid a t. The first meeting had discussed the plans of Krawchenko s escape. The important Point in this connection. Was that Percy Hagel was not introduced to Reid until after this conversation with Reid in the bar about the plans of escape took place. Again Buxton made the. Statement on the stand yesterday morning that he 2iad Irons to visit Krawchenko in the Burriss Block one evening after he Buxton had urst held a conference with Hagel in the latter a private office and was instructed by Hagel Tojo to the Block and secure a plan of it which Hagel was to turn Over to Kraf Chenko. . Bonnar brought out by Cross examination that when Buxton told history on the two previous occasions he said he first went to the Burriss Block and then re turned to consult with Hagel. The third discrepancy shown in Buxton s statements was. When he stated yesterday that Hagel had Given him the Money to redeem Buxton s two revolvers at the while on the other occasions Buxton said his a. H. Buxton ., whose evidence against Percy Hage and John Westlake occupied All. Yesterday s session. Salient Points of Button s Story told yesterday morning that he Buxton asked Constable Reid if Kraf Henko had counsel. " that Buxton introduced Reid to Hagel this office. F that on night of january 2, Reid told him Kraf Mehenko had a gun and was liable1 to get away. That Hagel and bid talked owl with him the plans of the escape in Hages private office. That Hagel instructed him to procure an Auto Matic Hagel instructed him1 to procure cartridges. That Hagel gave him the Money to get is revolvers out of Pawn. That Buxton put revolvers in table drawer at Bagel s suggestion in order that bid could get them by himself. That bid got the gun in Haefs presence also the rope for the purpose of conveying them to the prisoner. That Hagel arranged with Westlake for the suite in the Burriss Block and promised to pay for the accommodation. ,. That Hagel Tore up a portion of one of the Pawn tickets. That Hagel acquiesced in his suggestion that the numbers should be filed off the gun. That Hagel was present when the numbers were being filed off. That Hagel sent him to Burriss Block to locate suite 4, in order that Hagel might convey the plans to Krawchenko. That he furnished Hagel with this description. That after the escape Hagel sent him to see him to get out of town. Also to see Holt and Tell him to put Krawchenko in a piano Box and ship him put with the first Carload of freight. ,. / that he had known Hagel for nearly three years and a half during which time Heptad been his almost daily the first thought of escape for Krawchenko was conceived Over the bar of a local hotel. Position wanted a rung lady stenographer and Book to desires position. Three years henc4o in Blank if he had been promised immunity by the Crown and the fight was . Buxton keeps Cool. Buxton held his ground firmly and refused to Loose his. Equanimity Al though vigorously Battle of wits lasting perhaps three quarters of an hour took place in Volch . Bonnar attacked the witness from every Angle in an Effort to get him to commit himself on this question. L Buxton resorted to. Quibbling. At times he professed not to understand. He insisted should get this information from the Crown. He could a0t be driven to say bluntly that he had been promised his Freedom either in writing otherwise and the matter ended by the half admission that he had been promised consideration and that Deputy at Torney general Allen had told him. To go to the front arid Tell the Buxton said he thought at the time that the Promise of consideration was sufficient because it came front the department of Justice he put himself in their hands. He took their word like a gentleman.". He St ated that he had been under steady confinement and was still taking Tea and he denied that he had been allowed to see any person at the time that Percy Hagel was denied to see his counsel and stated that All his mail had been opened before it reached him. He admitted that held As a material witness and stated in conclusion that he did not know yet. What would happen to of the real bristling incidents of the afternoon occurred when . Bonnar attacked Buxton without gloves because he forced an innocent boy in Ashdown s to steal a Rev " for him. He ridiculed the remorse which Buxton said he left in this connection and wound up the incident. By remarking with deep irony that Al though Buxton s conscience pricked him because he thought human life would be taken with the. Gun he went right out next Day and got another re Volver. V a minor Contra diction that counsel for the defence brought out was that Buxton s previous evidence and that at the present time was directly at Vari Ance As to his having seen the occupants of suite 4, Burris Block the night he went up there yesterday he i said he did. On the previous occasion he said he did not. Among the Curt remarks of . Bonnar during the afternoon in. Cross examining Burton were the follow ing Why Are you hedging. Where were you on sunday were you at Church you Are trying to rope poor Hagel after . Bonnar at one time had remarked that Buxton and Reid were in pretty thick the reply from the wit Ness was have i tried to get out of it to which Bonnar replied huh you have done very Well my at another time when . Anderson objected to the attitude of Bonnar the latter remarked Jock Early me and Krawchenko Here seem to be getting along pretty at noon . Justice Curran instructed the jury to remain together under guard for lunch and at the close of the afternoon session he again addressed the jury and told them that if they would prefer to slay together the government would make arrangement f their Comfort lie added however with them and told them to think the matter Over until today., during the Day mrs. Percy Hagel was an interested Spectator occupy Inar a seat in the grand jury Box at tha Side of the court room. Hugh Phillips who acted for the Winnipeg police department at the Royal com Mission which investigated the escape was also present and j. D. Suffield was in Cour in the interest of his client John Krawchenko. By far most outstanding fact m Buxton s Story yesterday was his absolute failure to mention suggest any motive for assisting the escape. Edward Anderson Crown prosecutor who conducted the Eatn nation made no attempt to bring this out. I As at Royal commission. Buxton s Story appeared to the Lay Man to be almost identical with that told by him before the Royal commis Sion and at the. Preliminary hearing with the exception that it was a Little bit Mare elaborated. So far As West Lake is concerned it appeared at the opening stages of the examination As though he was not to be directly implicated by the Story for Buxton said that pains were taken to keep the real facts from Westlake. However later on Buxton told How when Hagel sent him to w est take s apartments to secure a plan of the suite he told Westlake that Hagel had sent him there. Westlake s reply according to the evidence was that Hagel already knew All about the plans of the suite. This was a Flat contradiction of the evidence of West Lake before the Royal commission. The masonic Story. Westlake in giving his evidence at that time said Buxton was helping Krawchenko because he was a Mason. There was absolutely no allusion to this in Buxton s evidence. Another significant remark was. Made by Buxton. He stated that at the time he went up to the Security warehouse to see Holt the latter asked him if any person had seen him enter the seem Elf throughout to enjoy the notoriety he was creating. / he spoke in a loud bold voice and invariably in describing a meeting with any would preface it by person he marking that he said hello Jack hello Perce and their reply hello Buck he referred to a gun As a Gat As on the former occasion when he gave evidence Light in bringing and seemed to de in the word hell trained him in the first instance the witness said he supposed it was be cause he was known to be intimate with Hagel and had been seen with Reid. However the court ruled this out. On the Krotine that it was taste police who should know Best the reason of the witness detention. Buxton continue her his Story said to had known Reid for a year but did not learn his name till last december when he was Intro wed to him at the Clarendon bar. On that occasion he was informed that Reid was guarding Krawchenko. And when Reid asked the witness i f he knew a to uhf lawyer that would like to make a mutation by defending Krawchenko he took him to ferny hag Al. At Hasei s office the three talked a while and went Back to the Clarendon there Are Ettner police constable1 Emmonds. The four cemented d their by a visit to the Empress. I Buxton. Told of conversations Between himself and Reid and Between himself and Harel. About Krawchenko. On one occasion Hagel remarked that at first he thought it would be possible to get Bis client off. But the Case grew tougher and tougher till at last he thought it would be a hard one -. Broached topic of escape. Then one Nischt in the Clarendon bar the possibility of Krawchenko making continued of Pasa ten obneba1 advertising. At opportune occasions. Buxton was brought into court through the prisoners door and was also escorted out that Way at the close of the session attended always by a guard. He was neatly dressed in a Blue Serge suit with White Lawn showing along the Vest lapels. His hair had grown quite Long and scraggly during his confinement and his face had grown thin and wan by Strain and worry he did Mot Wear the Emblem of any Lodge. Percy Hagel smiles. As the Story of the Star witness was unfolded Percy Hagel in the Dock smiled with amusement and at times he and Westlake talked together. At the close of the session Hagel seemed to be in a Light hearted mood and Shook hands with some friends. Buxton on the stand. J i John h. Buxton. ., who stave his j address As 289 Queen Street was sex mined by . Anderson when the. Court resumed the hearing yesterday morning Buxton stated his occupation was that of sales manager for the Northwest builders suppl company. At present he was in the provincial jail and had been in custody of the police since Jan. 17. Percy Hagel he had known for three years and for the last year and a half had. Been in almost daily companionship with him. He had sold Hagel his to explain Why the police de the double work of the blood the circulation of the blood is one of the most perfect pieces of Mechan ism in the universe.
