Tilv Ewi sold liquor on evening of elec Tion Day and ordered to pay each twelve Winnipeg hotel proprietors pleaded guilty in the provincial police court yesterday to charges of sell ing liquor on election Day contrary to the provisions of the liquor License act. They were each fined and costs. Seven others arraigned on similar charges did not plead but obtained remands. All the information were Laid by Richard Power assistant chief liquor License inspector for Manitoba. Those of the accused that pleaded guilty urged in extenuation that everybody was doing in each Case the in formation was to the effect that the bars were opened after the polls closed. This practice said the hotel keepers had been followed in the last election without any prosecutions following. Magistrate Bonnycastle replied that liquor License act was Clear and there was no excuse for violation of the Law. Ignorance of the Law was no excuse. John Allan Deputy attorney general was present for the Crown. Before his arrival however the magistrate had favourably considered one or two re quests for rems Side and it seemed Likely that remands would not be re fused when asked. Or. Allen put a new face on this matter by objecting strongly to the granting of remands in the absence of a valid excuse. He the oases should be heard. According to the election act liquor May be sold after the polls close on election Days. It is not from the elec Tion act however that hotel keepers de rive their privileges and the clauses of the liquor License act clearly prohibit Sale of liquor at any time during the Day of an elect a.
