War summary free press special Palis August 16. The War office today announced a Victory for the French on saturday at Dinant Belgium which discovers for the first time the exact location of the French allies in Belgium. Sharp fighting took place on the right Bank of the Meuse where the German forces composed of infantry supported by cavalry and rapid Sre guns were Force d to Retreat in disorder. Of the Uhland horses were captured in the engagement which was marked 57 a display of Brilliant courage on the part of the French. During the greater part of the Battle the fighting was Between the artillery where the French again proved their superiority. When germans fell Back they were pursued for ten Miles by French to masseurs and infantrymen. A Brilliant French Victory. The operations around Dinant indicate that the germans South of the Meuse Are pressing Forward toward the French Frontier. The All Day Battle at Dinant is described As a Brilliant French Victory due Iii Efimy to the excellence of the French artillery. The germans held the Western part of the City on the left Bank if the Meuse River and the French advanced upon them from the right or Smiith Eastern Bank. The French went into Battle with 36 guns in 6 batteries but they also had masked batteries of heavier farther Back. At a Range of three to three and a half Miles the French guns dropped shells with unerring acc Tracy among the German artillery its and time after time made it so hot that the germans retired. Little by Little the French followed them never moving except to draw. Nearer and serving their guns with machine like precision. At the close of the Day the germans had been pushed four Miles from their original position to the southward toward give and the French were still following them up and hurling shells into them. Fighting1 in Southern Lorraine. Terrific fighting is going on Between French and German forces a Long a twelve mile Battle line stretching from Sarr Bourg in countries of having organized j Southern Lorraine to Lineville in the French a he it Moselle according to an official statement issued of the War ministry in Paris today. The French War office claims that the French soldiers were victorious in the first Day of the Battle which commenced at Daybreak on saturday. The bavarian forces according to the same War once statement have been pushed Back across the Border to German territory losing every position they have gained previously in this Vicinity. The French troops have taken several new positions notably in the Vicinity of Donan and the upper Bruehne Valley which gives them an opening into Strassburg. Donan is in the Vosges just on the Border opposite the capital of Alsace. Armies Are being reinforced. On the line from Thionville to Verdunville near Luxemburg the germans still hold the Region around brie and Longway. It therefore the entire Western contingent that was Given a Send off and it was All the More vigorous on that account. Military officers vrho were present said the troops were a Fine a body of men As they Ever looked Over. One glance was. Sufficient to see that they were seasoned toughened men men of Stout hearts and the right for War men whom Western .proud1 of in the months to come. They Nad the appearance of trained. Is Hting soldiers. They Etc Orrin line with heels together chests they answered to commands As one Man. There was nothing a Welsh or crude about this body men hastily got together for the me and their soldierly Bear ing was accentuated by that none of them with the exception of the Moose jaw contingent wore a uni form or carried a Rifle. The Foose jaw boys had purchased their own uni forms for temporary use and presented a in Broad brimmed Stetson and Khaki suits. A classes there. It was this general absence of uni forms that robbed the departure of the troops of much of its dramatic effect and on this account the Send offi was not As ostentatious As it might other Wise have been. Added to this was the great confusion at. The depot with the bulk of the crowd penned into the fenced enclosure and scores of people pressing through to catch trains for Winnipeg Beach and other Points. The Lack of uniforms furnished a perfect exposure of the class of men who Are going to the front. They were of All classes in. Society ranging from labor ing men who still wore their soiled overalls to Farmers homesteaders and office latter dressed smartly in the latest among them was found that spirit of Comra Derie that characterizes the icing s soldiers the world Over. Included. In the ranks were several married men and one from Saskatoon is a Boer who opposed the British in the Boer War Winnipeg did full Honor to her de parting troop. Led by the veterans band and most of the army veterans in Winnipeg they paraded to the depot after first being addressed by col Steele on the University Campus. At the several civic officials Werf present to extend the glad hand and wish them goodbye and controller mid a about in his kindly Way pinning the Winni Peg coat of arms on the breast of every Man who left for the front from this City. Was Quick work. It is scarcely More than half a dozen Days since the Telegraph wires flashed invitation to Western cities to enlist men for the Princess Patricia Light infantry. The veterans of Britain s wars were preferred and these flocked to the colors with such alacrity that the lists were almost immediately filled up. In fact they were crazy to go and this too with the full knowledge that continued on gone to the War. X westerners with Princess Patri Cia s Winnipeg contingent to Princess.
