Dis Patch to the daily mail says that Abdul Harned the former Sultan of Turkey consulted by the Young turks has advised them to conclude peace. At the same time he expressed the belief that the Anglo French Fleet would be Able to Force the Dardan Elies. London feb. 3. With comparative quiet the Western front the fighting in the East which is More strenuous ind widespread monopolizes attention. A Hill the russians arc on the offensive in Bast Prussia Northwestern Poland and in the passes of the carpathians the germans continue their attacks on the russian lines along the Bzura and raw a Rivers. The invaders reached the raw a line about the Middle of december and since that time have made at least halt a dozen attacks in Force against the russian trenches each time at undoubted heavy Cost. Nothing daunted however they have been repeating the attacks during the past week and while they have a slight Advance it has accomplished Only after further great losses according to the reports from Petro Grad. Now it is believed that the Ger mans Are preparing for still another onslaught for Only by compelling the russians to strengthen their line protecting Warsaw can they Hope to divert the russian attacks from 13ast Prussia and Hungary. Attempting the impossible. Military men Here hold to the belief that the germans Are attempting what seems virtually impossible in their efforts to Force their Way through to a Warsaw. The raw a and Burn lines which they have been attacking for Sis weeks Are exceedingly Strong for or. The right Banks of the Rivers which the russians for the most part Hotd the ground is considerably higher than on the left Banks so that the rus Sian infantry and artillery have a decided advantage. Should the germans break through this Barrier there is another line of we enc ments half Way Between the and Warsaw with Blonie As the Centre which would have to be forced fore the polish capital fell. To the carpathians Tho austrians and germans Are offering vigorous re stance to the russians a decision not yet been reached in the Battle has been in Progress there for Days. The statement in the russian official that there has been fighting to uie Southeast of to Zsok pass in the in of Duklas pass and to the South of Beskid pass indicates the sex ent of the struggle for the Possession onesie two important strategic Points. The attempt of a German submarines officially reported to torpedo the whitish Hospital ship Asturias has at a acted a great Deal of attention in where it is strongly condemned. Skirmish at Suez canal. There has been another skirmish be the British and turkish scouts Joast the Suez canal near Ismalia. Me turks were driven off with some and the British had six men wounded. The opinion still prevails London that the turks will not at to Cross the desert with a Large and that the . Din a tricks arranged Only to compel the Brit Isje to keep troops in Egypt instead of sending them to France. Ine bulgarian Premier m. Million Dol Lars is the approximate monetary value of the present War to the textile and Woolen industries of Canada so How much More will come Forward in the future is a matter for conjecture but it is stated that the Canadian made articles have generally met with the approval of Canadas customers and there is every indication of continued orders. From a position approaching idleness Canadian Mills have been run Ning at capacity. To Date it. Is estimated that there have been placed on account of the British government alone through their Canadian buying agents orders for clothing to the extent of with another order in contemplation valued at four millions a million Dollar order placed by the War office direct and clothing ordered by the Canadian Mili Tia department approximating the order for Khaki goods alone total knit goods. War orders for knit goods to the value of about have kept the Mills Busy while lines to Tho value of formerly imported from Germany and Austria will Here after be manufactured in Canada. Canadian Blanket have Bencil Stefl to the tune of some thing like from the War. Recently an order was offered Mills for Worth of blankets for the French government. Higher Bates . Has filed new schedule for Eastern lines with railway commissioners. Ottawa feb. Companies in the East Are believed to be feeling their Way toward an increase in their Side of the great lakes. The . Has already filed with the Board railway commissioners new tariffs calling for an increase of one cent tier 100 pounds on Grain and Grain products from the head of the lakes to Points in Ontario Quebec and the maritime pro Vinces with similar increases All Over Ontario. These increases were to be come effective on feb. 15 next but Al ready objections to them have been filed by the Montreal Corn Exchange the on Tario Millers and the Toronto Board of Trade. The objections will be heard by the Board next tuesday. While it is generally admitted that the railroads Are contemplating general increases in Eastern rates. It is under stood that they do not contemplate a Blanket increase of five per cent such As that recently granted to the trunk line railways in the new England states by the interstate Commerce commission it is contended that this increase will not bring the returns in increased Revenue which were expected and that a general revision would have been far More satisfactory. It is pointed out for in that the Revenue gained from such an increase on certain class rates is insignificant since class rates constitute but a Small portion of the traffic 01 the railroads. On the other hand it is pointed out that on certain commodity rates now being can led at a very Low figure the increase is not Groat enough. It is therefore Sugg ested that Tho railroads should be to make graduated increases on certain commodity rates on which the profit at present is Small that Thev should be permitted to make to rift for certain goods now being carried practically tree and to make charges for special privileges enjoyed by certain classes of tile Community. Such condition it is us be left As they arc. The tariffs filed on wheat and its products Are believed to be forerunners of further tariffs incr asking commodity rates in Eastern Canada.
