Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 15, 1915, Winnipeg, Manitoba
B Manitoba Tjabe press tuesday. Juke 15, 3915. Farmers forum a column for the discussion of All matters of interest to tilt Farmers of Western Canada. Address All letters editor Farmers editorial comment j conserving live Stock. J it has come to the knowledge of the free press that one of the Large Cuttle and packing industries of Western Canada has contracted to deliver in France before the end of october 1015, head of cattle principally to Ujj heifers and feed ing Stool and that these animals Aro for the purpose of re stocking Tho French farms. There is no question a to the Bona fides of the contract. Tho first shipment of cattle was to have been made in May but this Era-ing1 to shortage of boats and pos Sibly to the activity of German sub marines was not accomplished. Pre however Are going Lor with a View of getting them across As soon As possible. While it is apparent that All of these cattle Aro not necessarily to be drawn from Western Canadian ranches and farms it is highly pro Bable that the greater bulk of them will be purchased in Western Canada the Farmers of the West have an absolute right to sell their cattle at any age they please the Only limit to right would be a Dominion government embargo on the ground that the country in View of the War cannot spare present or prospective food stuffs. This is a measure which is not Likely to come into Force unless conditions As to cattle Supply become More acute than they Are at present. Naturally the government will be slow to Movo in View of the fact that the cattle Are for the help and Comfort of our French allies. While the above is True the free press would to negligent in its duty did it not Point out first to the owner of Young Stock and particularly Young female Stock and second to the country at Large that even a Veo fancy Price at the moment is really poor business. For a Concrete example it is Only necessary to go Back to the past Winter when re Moun horses were being bought and when in spite of warnings from 30 to 4 per cent of the horses sent Forward for re mount purposes were mares today the Western provinces if no actually Short of Brood mares have not nearly As Many As it would be profitable to Breed. On the very heels of the government demand for re mount horses came government advice to Breed every Mare possible. The writer saw in one draft of some re mount horses mares that it was nothing Short of a crime to Ive Farmers who have Money could of together and discuss this matter ruefully and fully with the Largo acc Long House interests rail ays some scheme could be worked it whereby the Farmer in need of Oney and with Youngr Stock to sen Ould get the Money lie needs and at he same time the Stock be retained a. The country fed. And used Lor reeding purposes. It seems like a Oke that the railway companies have special Low rates on the Fri Riding in of Breeding Stock and on. He other hand Breeding Stock is be re shipped out by the Carload. The Farmers arc complaining and Vith a Good show , that hey Aro not getting what they should get for their Proi uce. On thu other land the people in the cities and owns Are finding living hat it is no exaggeration to say that with Many of them they must have Relief or go elsewhere to live. There Are surely brains enough in the can Adian West to devise some Means whereby the West can increase its production so that living will be More reasonable and at the same time the producer will receive an adequate return from his labor. Probably nothing is More significant of the bad management which is going on than the fact that while the production of hogs increased than 50 per the year 1914, and the producers of these hogs were obliged to take a Price for them which., was not profitable the decline in the Price of pork products such As Bacon and Ham was so Small As to be largely negligible. This is probably wandering somewhat far Stock of just about Sale at f Calgary in april gives the following comparison with 1d14 1914. 191o. 104 168.70 herefords galloways. Favor of producing thick yarn from Fine Wool Stiffis government loses Jig he tin supreme court declines to be View reversal of judgment in Cash Register Case. June supremo Youit today declined to review the reversal by the sixth United states circuit Conj it of appeals of the conviction of officials of the National Cash Register company of alleged violations of the Sheiman anti go out of the country. It was not As if there were no geldings to take their places. Geldings could have been obtained. Possibly at that time they would have Cost a Little More Money but it would have been tie Best kind of spend it if by so doing the Breeding Stock had been retained in the country. With regard to the cattle the do minion government figures declare a decrease cattle for the whole Dominion of Canada of is per cent. In like eight j ears. There have already Ouen very heavy mar Betings of Young Femali a to the United states and it is no exaggeration that there is at pres ent time not to spare in. The Canadian West to say nothing of is these Ani Mals should not be allowed to go out of the country if our farms Are to be kept up to a reasonable degree of efficiency in the matter of supplies. This matter of not allowing Young female Stock to go out of the coun try does not rest wholly with the Man who produces it. If he is Short of food or in need of Money he has a right to sell when and what he can but it is surely time that some Broad scheme was devised whereby this waste would be prevented. To allow these Young animals to be shipped out of Canada now As far from the immediate subject of Dis Cussion which is the Prospect of our Young Stock going to the free press does not feel that it is in a position to offer an Ade quate solution to this problem but with so Many organizations meeting and passing resolutions irom which nothing practical Ever comes it be gins to look As Busi Ness in Western a Tenada is very much in the same position As toe Cannon described the United states in its attitude towards Germany namely that there Aro too Many notes and and too Little we have live Stock organizations of All kinds in the different provinces we have a Western live Stock Union which covers All three Western pro being the lessened Cost of As the finer Wool is drawn the More it costs to manufacture the yarn. It Fine Yang Are made wools pre dominating in Mei Iuo mood Only can to used but far thick yarns Tho manufacturer has his Choice of the entire Range. As a general Pio Sofai you the finer yarns Are required for Light weight dress goods and men s Wear the coarser for heavy weight goods. Shortly after the 1st july manufacturers begin turning their machinery to the Pio Duclion of Light weight goods which will not be worn until the following Spring and hum Mer and during the six month period in which Light goods Are. Be ing manufactured there arises a Strong demand for the finer grades of Wool to take the place of medium wools it is but logical to assume t that the finer grades will be greatly enhanced in value. Confidence in the future of the woo Market for Oil grades is warranted. The United states at the last Lon Don sales purchased Only Liou pounds and under present and prospective condition Only Merino can be obtained i that Market. De Mand in the West has centred on medium clips and Merino Are not Trust jaw. By today s decision the government lost Tho most important criminal pro ecu ton that has yet come to trial under the Sherman Law and was regarded by former attorney general Wickersham and attorney general Gregory ajl probably the most far reaches Bull of its kind in the government s Long list of prosecutions of the circuit court reversed the convictions of president John h. Patter son and other officers of the National Cash Register which Cai ried jail sentences although it did not deny the government Tho right to proceed in some Otho Way. The convicted officials the supreme court had no review the action of the court which had upset the lower verdicts. Sensational charges. The government s Case contained Many sensational allegations of unfair Competition and monopoly and in its Appeal to the for a review referred to the. Defendants As steeped Iii deliberate department Justice officials made no secret that they considered the Etna by of the Cilmi Ual Section of the Sheiman Law was at stake m today s Case which was lost to the govern ment. Officials of the department of jus Tice stated after the court s announce ment that nothing but for tie government to proceed in the Ower court. It May ask to have the cases dismissed or press for a second trial in the District court like the new store service at the incorporated 167o we believe this to be in Many respects he greatest aggregation of men s suits we have Ever offered at t it it is not a and we Are going to Tell you Why i shape retaining and Wear resisting garment we had these suits made up of imported materials fancy and dark Check materials "7c had them made up to sell at to and even but these Are unusual times and we offer them at the most unusual Price of mohair italian and some silk linings furnishings and Fis All up to the Standard of excellence which you get in Well tailored clothes. All sizes 36 to 44. F we Reserve the right to refuse to sell Sale expressly getting the speculative support buyers they prefer deserve to take medium clips As the War continues they Are confident of still higher prices. Growers who have Well bid Good character Wool should not be disturbed Over the Outlook however even if it is Onerino. Wool. It is Plain that the More uses to which anything can be put the More valuable it be comes. Fine wools spun into Fine and also coarse yarns but coarse wools can Only be spun into coarse yarns. A Vinces the Canadian West is concerned is a repetition in another form of of the Goose which lays the Golden if the West allows its Young Breeding cattle to go to France where is it to be re stocked from not from Eastern Canada for it has been depleted almost As badly As the West not from the United states for they Are Shorter than Canada. While there Are Many Farmers who we have men Iii the live Stock business both that of producers and handlers that Are second to none in their knowledge and ability we have a country admirably adapted for live Stock production and. There is a Market for All that can be produced. Surely then it cannot be an impossible task to devise some me ans whereby live Stock production can be on a profitable basis to the producers and at the same time the necessaries of life to supplied to the people of the cities and towns at such prices As will enable them to buy Good food and plenty of it and further to devise ways and Means whereby All surplus production Over and above the country s requirements can steady Market at reason ably profitable prices correspondence american Wool Market. James e. Poole Chicago. Wool Trade sentiment is unanimously bullish but readjustment is in evidence and the Gap Between Fine and medium grades must narrow. Medium and coarse wools have worked to a level where Merino must follow. All Are in the sixties on a Clear paying basis. Formerly wools were in the sixties others in the forties which timely topics the Manitoba agricultural College is issuing a series of Short talks on timely topics. The two chosen for this week Are june weeds and barn disinfection the suggestions in these Little talks Are All practical easy to remember and Well Worth past ing. June weeds. It is in june that the perennial tweeds mature from roots that Winter through and the annual weeds get a Start from seed. Tins makes june a bad month to Start Alfalfa and crops that find Dif acuity in competing with weeds. It has been been found at Manitoba Agu cultural College that of Tho whole late june seeding of Altula was the earlier or later sow Ings Aro better so far As trouble weeds is concerned. Our three worst weeds Are our june perennials quack grass sow Thistle and Canada Thistle. Pupils exhibit work at St. Academy tie the double window show of these tonight and remember the Sale starts Sharp at 8.30 . Tomorrow main floor rivals these As the Only annual which a pest is the wild oat. Now a perennial Weed is a Root trouble and an annual is a seed trouble so they must be dealt with in different ways in dealing with perennials we pro just attack1.the Root owing Multi m rating and harrowing will work the move shallow Loots of Cirack grass and sow Thistle out of the ground. Do not use the disc Harrow. As it Only makes matters worse by cutting the Loots into smaller pieces each part of which w Al brow. In All cases the roots must be exposed to the Sun and at the same time starve out the parts that the cultivator will not reach. Keep the fancy Black. Keep it Black All summer and perennial weeds such As Thistle and quack brass. Will be stained out. This method of keeping the fallow arc Short of Money at time it might Surprise generally to know that numbers of Western is a Normal condition. No precedent june the get Atte those per Enolal weeds. Barn disinfection. Proper disinfection of barns water troughs and fences at least once a year is Good farm Pic tick. Many of diseases common May to animals the present tie Public there Are Farmers who have Money to invest and surely there is no Way in which it could be invested to better advantage than by this Young Stock in the country. The Man who Sells now does not do so because he is anxious to help re Stock French farms which is no doubt a laudable work but he Sells because he needs the Money and thinks rightly or wrongly that he needs the immediate Price of a yearling so badly that he sacrifices the profit on the two year old which he would get by keeping Ana Breed ing it for another year. He would be just As willing to sell this Young animal to his brother Farmers to Breed feed As he is to sell it to go to France. As was pointed out in another editorial on this Page there Are thou Sands of acres of land in the immediate Vicinity of Winnipeg to say nothing of in other districts that Are immediately available for Slock raising and purposes and surely some of the pro res p. Exists for the present Market status it is an. Extraordinary situation. Medium wools Aro getting too Leigh for general use and spinners will have no alternative but turn to Fine wools which heretofore have been too expensive for substitutes. A Factor to be taken into consideration in selecting the kind of Wool to be used in the production of the various sizes of yarn is the style effect and feel required in the fabric. Finer qualities Gofter Foci in the cloth but the principal deter mining Factor general use of Merino Wool Lias been its greater Cost during the past year Tho in crease in prices of and Woods has been much greater than in the Case of the finer As tie figures show May May increase 1914 1915 prob. Fine red m Staple 57c. 67c Loc 17% Viz blood Staple g9c 12c 21% blood 66c 16c 32% u blood 62c. 19c 44% since tie Ivar and resultant enor Mous demands upon the Worl d s Wool Supply manufacturers first turned to the which were the in clean Cost and would produce a rough serviceable fabric., this has resulted in an extraordinary demand for three eights Quarter blood and Low Quarter blood wools causing such an increase in prices As to Force them to a. Parity with finer grades. Now that the various grades Are approximate yall on the diseases us nuts it May in. This Way be prevented. The Best disinfectants Are very inexpensive and Conseco gently should be used liberally the animal husbandry department of Manitoba agricultural College sus sets the following Matenas As being and Crew to Are disinfectants and each both excellent o exec osts in the neighbourhood of is per Allon. One Ballon of either in 20 gals f water is the right strength for Uso Are s on stable Walls floors mangers and feed boxes and May be applied with a Moo or Broom. Many Farmers White Wath the Interior of then barns once a year and this is a practice to be highly recommended. Whitewash however is recommended. Whit a not a disinfectant and should have a pint of crude carbolic acid added to each three Sals of Whitewash. All dirt and Straw should to remove from the joiners before the disinfectant As applied As it in in these places that disease germs gather. One Dollar s Worth of Cie olm or crude carbolic will be sufficient to disinfect a Largo barn and is cheap insurance against disease. The candling of eggs. The livestock department at Ottawa also issues this week a timely bulletin on the candling of eggs. The value o this bulletin is largely m the race Lent illustrations which would be difficult to reproduce m the Ordinary newspaper and the attention of those interested therefore directed to the procuring o pamphlet no. 3, poultry division re Vised edition livestock Branch Ottawa by mating for this it is possible to obtain the latest and most Pracca information for candling of eggs Welcl should be packed for Winter use. Flax. The car. I a recent report stated that there has Lieen a vigorous advertising Campaign carried on m the press by users of linseed Oil in an Deavor to induce Farmers to inon Deavo their flax acreage. This Campaign seems to be bearing fruit where farm ers Are Able to land As on tire Portas a Plains they Are seeding Small Fields to flax some run As High As 130 acres. The flax crop in seven persons District alto., will be Large this Vear As a result of this Campaign. There will be at least acres flax in. That District. There will be an increase in flax acreage Over last year in these two districts but this is not True of the whole West expected on account of the Lack of seed and Money with which to buy it there will be a decided decrease.
