The Street was dimly could you identify no i Don t think i witness said he had Laid the matter of recovering the Money before the attorney general. He was not hopeful of recovering this Money. Examined further by or. Symington witness said that Crossen. Was a son in Lawi of or. Montague. He had offered to pay for. The automobile but the latter said a note would be All Light. Witness said he had tendered Liis resignation to take effect one month from june 5. Afternoon session. Roy l. Worthington estimator for Thos. Kelly and sons was called and examined by c. P. Wilson. He said he was not consulted by his employers in regard to their tender for the parliament building. He made estimates of the quantities required on various parts of the work re Ferring to the foundations he said he received from the. Architect a Blue print which he thought showed con Crete piles re mired he thought 20 feet Long. Or. Wilson suggested t o-t5he witness he might remember something about 46 feet. Or. Worthington said he did not. He remembered a. Boring Sheet which showed the depth to Hardpan and approximately 48 feet to Rock. Asked Why having a Boring Sheet depth to be 48 feet to Rock he had estimated on piles 20 feet Long he said the piles did not begin from the surface. Another reason was that it would have been a physical impossibility to drive con Crete piles through the layers of boulders and Liard an shown on the Boring Sheet As overlaying the Rock. He said he believed the plan of piles shown to him called for piles of 20 feet. Did hot the specification Call for piles driven to May have done or. Wilson then asked the witness How in. That Case he had come to figure on 20 feet piles Worthington said a Blue print was furnished to him calling for 20-foot piles. I suggest to that Concrete piles were not figured on because they we re not to be the witness sail he had no know ledge to that effect. You still think the plan on which you estimated showed the depth of the piling to be 20 far As i can went to Kelly s House i or. Worthington said that previous to the opening of the commission he had gone to see or. Kelly at his House. At that time he had again seen the firm s estimates the parliament building Job. They had talked about building. Or. Wilson handed the witness a tracing. After inspecting it or. Worthington said it appeared to be a plan of the brings and test holes on the parliament building. It showed nothing about the Depths of piles but the depth of the brings was shown As 50 feet the witness said this appeared to be a tracing of the plan he had used for making his is he would to it without seeing the original. Another plan was shown to the witness. It provided for All piles to be sunk to Rock. In View of this or. Wilson said he assumed the witness would have taken that plan in making his estimate. Or. Worthington said he would never figure on piles to Rock. Suppose you took it even to Tho Hardpan what average depth would you have. You would get even in that Case a very much greater depth than 20 the witness would not positively admit that. Do you know whether or not the tender was put in on your do did you know the Raymond pile was a totally different thing than what is called for in the know Tho Raymond the Raymond pile company ten dered to Kelly and sons for 20 loot 6 Inch circular piles at on basis of 20 feet. Did you prepare your estimate for the piling on a basis of 20 asked or. Think i did you therefore prepared your estimates on a totally different scale than the estimates called i prepared my estimates of the Dis Tance the piles could be driven. Witness said he would not pay absolute attention to a Boring Sheet when he knew it would be impossible to drive to Rock. What object would that be asked or. Wilson in estimating Depths of piles at 20 feet when the specifications called for much greater May have been instructed on or. Wilson you probably were. It was quite said the witness that i made the 20 foot estimates at the suggestion of Thomas questioned closely As to whether 20 foot piles would meet the Spee Isea or. Wilson suggested to the wit Ness that piles driven 20 feet might not have satisfied the government Engineer who might have required piles driven to conclusion in Accord Ance with the specifications. In that Case the witness said the contractor get it in the counsel pointed out that the letter from the Raymond pile company at Montreal was dated june 30, 1913. It could not therefore have been received in Winnipeg until july 2, the Day appointed by the government Foi receiving the tenders. The witness admitted that he had made his estimates three weeks before that time or. Andrews objects. Or. Wilson contended therefore that the 20 foot depth on which the witness based estimates must have originated in Thos. Kelly and sons office. At this stage or. An Drews objected to the method by which the witness was being exam ined. Or. Wilson said he would state what he was trying to get at openly what i want to he said is that the witness made a farce estimate on piles which was never intended to be Bona address ing the witness he said assuming that you prepared your estimate by the basis of 20 feet you never in tended it As a Boha fade estimate according to the plans and specific or.
