Minimum 40. Rises. . Seta 8-40 v m Moon rises . Noon. Winnipeg Bro Day july 3, 1915. Twenty six pages. Vol. 41. Everything fair and above Board in incidents leading up to resignation refutes insinuation of improper dealings Between himself and present Premier Money matters at no time Dis cussed High character for or Norris attorney general Hudson declares Promise of immunity Given to anyone the attorney general of the pro Vince Hon. A. B. Hudson finished his evidence before the new Royal commission yesterday. Altogether he had spent several hours in the stand and had been examined by both or. Fuller ton and or. Pitblado. Or. Fullerton tried to get details from or. Hudson on All sorts of Points and his questions were Al answered with the greatest fullness and frankness. In fact or. Hudson in nearly every Case would go on and furnish amplifying state ments of great clearness. There was never the slightest disposition to hold anything but rather an evident desire to Tell everything that he knew. Or. Hudson declared with Groat Force and finality that there was never at any time during the negotiations for the change of government or after any Promise of immunity for anyone who might be Slown to be guilty of a crime. Or. Hudson gave full and com plete reasons for the negotiations carried on with or. Phippen from the standpoint of the liberals. He pointed out that owing to important circumstances these Steps were considered As in the Best interests of the province. After or. Hudson had finished sir Rodmond Roblin was called by or. Ful Carton. A. Andrews counsel for the former government previous to this had asked that any members of the former government be Given the Protection of the court. He wanted this Protection in Case of any sub sequent action being taken against them. Sir Rodmond on taking the stand asked Protection from being compelled to give a rehearsal of private and confidential conversations which he had held with other parties. He seemed to consider it altogether in fair that he should be called upon to divulge conversations which he had had with friends under his own roof. The sex Premier although called by or. Fullerton told a Story which at All Points refuted any idea of any thing improper having occurred in the negotiations which led up to the resignation of himself and his government. He scornfully refuted any insinuation that anything of an improper nature had been discussed or hinted at Between himself and the present Premier. He Pooh poohed any suggestion of any Money matters having been at any time discussed. Sir Rodmond also declared that he had written his letter of resignation himself. He had been furnished with a Short memo to incorporate in this letter of resignation and he had he thought copied it correctly. This memo had been handed to him by or. Phippen and was the same As the one on file As an exhibit Al though similar in wording. The sex Premier declared that he had resigned because he thought that a new government could clean up the Moss better than he could. He had considered it essential in the interests of the province. Everything had been done fair and above Board and was subject to the approval of the Mathers commission. Sir Rodmond gave Premier Norris a High certificate of character. He had sat with him in the legislature Tor Many years and had never known him to . Or even to suggest a Dis honorable tiling. While politically opposed they had always been per Sonal friends. Sir Rodmond stood in the after noon for Well Over three hours and a reused to kit Down. He declared that he was tired in the least. He appeared to be distressed Only by to repeat confidential chats which in had had. With or. N on is under his roof tree lion a Var. When told he had to an Suer the questions he answered and fully but without Hamm lodged n. Vigorous protect. Iwo i it kilo. Counsel for the Ron ducted Hia examination t sir i four must make monthly allowance for wives Ottawa july married Man who joins the soldiers has to set aside a month for his wife or she does get any separation Al Lowance from the government. In he artillery the officers Are insisting that the married men set aside 1 5 a month to their wives when they in list. After that they still have about a month entirely for spending Money because he food and cloth ing Are All furnished them. If a Man comes in and says that his wife does need his a month he is told that she does need the a month separation Al Lowance which the government gives in addition to the of flier s pay. It is a very effective Way of avoid ing any imposition upon the govern ment with regard to the separation allowance and seems to be More satisfactory than the provision that where men marry a certain time after they enlist their wife was entitled to the separation allowance. In is fell if a Man is prepared to give half his salary to his wife the government should be ready to give the separa Tion allowance. Anglo French troops on Galli. They now look for a great turning movement by the russian troops that will Force the abandonment of the German offensive Between the Viepi-7. And Bug Rivers in russian Poland where hard fighting is still in Progress. In their withdrawal before the Superior forces of the enemy the russians have shortened the distance Over which it is necessary to trans port reinforcements and ammunition. The germans and austrians have lengthened their lines of communication. A.11 reports from the front agree that there has been a noticeable slackening in the artillery fire of the Austro German forces. This 1s due to the fact that in their Advance eastward they have run away from their ammunition supplies in the Hope of piercing the russian front a plan is declared by the rus Sian leaders to Hare completely failed. Terrific artillery fire along Western Paris july following offi Cial statement was issued by the French War office tonight during Friday on the entire front from the Yser to the Argonne there were nothing but artillery duels especially in the Region of Quenn Everes. In the Argonne the enemy after a very violent bombardment at tempted a now and general attack Between the roads leading to Benar Ville and by Anteuil. After an especially stubborn fight which at cer Tain Points developed into a hand to hand encounter we were Able to hold All our positions. Yesterday evening the germans after most intense artillery preparation attempted on our positions on Hilgen first in the a series of attacks the first two of which were repulsed. In the course of the third attack succeeded in gaining a foothold in our works. Through a counter attack we re captured this morning All our positions which the germans Are continuing to Shell violently. In the Dardanelles after the successes gained by the British troops on june 28, the turks attempted several violent counter attacks against the positions taken from them. They were repulsed with heavy losses. On june 30 we carried a turkish redoubt in the form of a Quadri lateral including six successive lines of trenches. The ground is covered with the bodies of turkish soldiers. We have been counter at recurrence of heavy gun fire. London july sudden re Currence of heavy artillery fire by the germans at Many Points in France is a marked feature of the fighting on the Western front but in the meantime the Austro German and Vance in Galicia and in Poland is unchecked and the Teutons have shown no disposition to diminish the intensity of their Eastern offensive. The polish fortress of Zamosc has been captured and Progress in other sectors of strategic importance in the claimed by Berlin. There has been during the week no official news whatever from the British front in Flanders but Gen. Sir Tan Hamilton commanding the Allied land forces at the Dardanelles in his second official dispatch of the week records the repulse of a vicious counter attack by the turks who were Bent on recovering the lost ground South of the fortified Hill of Achi Baba and the Strong position at krithia., which the British have for some time been attempting to envelop. The British forged a bit Forward last monday and thus following Day the turks after sapping and mining launched a counter stroke with the Bayonet. This was crushed while the French Force operating on the right in Kreves Valley toward the East coast of Gallipoli advanced and consolidated ground won the latter part of june. The distances Are stated. Achi Baba a Small Gibraltar. Despite the hard fighting Ever since the Landing on april 25, the Franco British expedition Only lately has achieved anything notable to Ward strengthening its hold on the. Tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula Achi Baba being a Small Gibraltar bristling with machine guns sur rounded by barbed wire and Ter raced with trenches. This is the reason Why an Allied Progress is hailed with great satisfaction in land. It is interesting to the trib utes to the turks bravery and even gallantry paid in almost every Dis Patch from the British correspondents at the Dardanelles. At no time during the Peninsula fighting have the turks been accused of atrocities. Unofficial dispatches from the italians austrian Frontier and from Rome state that the italians have advances in the Trentino and other places on their front.
