The matter came up in the Rig hts of the committee of resolutions. On a Resolution expressing Diss Atista tier. The government was formed that the agitation of the Western Grain grow ers for the abolition of the Tariff Canada s would not be continued during the i period of the War. This tie said had been denied by some of the Grain growers during the session just ended but a newspaper report of an address by Hon. T. A. The Tariff is not the Issue at present. The great outstanding Issue is the winning of the after referring to the fact that the Toronto Globe had in View of this statement described the Tariff situation As a or. Parsons said want duty removed. The manufacturers therefore accepted this View and would have re-1 spec Ted the same throughout if others had done so. We have found however today in the Western provincial Legislatures resolutions have been passed asking for the removal of the duty on agricultural implements As a so called War measure in Farmers papers and other organs there has been carried on a. Constant agitation against the. Tariff and denunciation of the manufacturers. Grain growers have recently challenged manufacturers to come out openly and declare themselves upon the Tariff question. Much As we would have preferred that there be no consideration of this question during the period of the War As All our attention f should be fixed upon Dur National Obi a nations yet some measure of action j has been forced upon us and it is therefore necessary to deny Many of i the unfair erroneous and misleading statements that have been made for the purpose of trying to prejudice the minds of the Public against manufacturers and manufacturing interests Oei this Countz a. Friends of Farmers. Our statements should be pre faced with the remark that the manufacturers of this country along with i air other classes Are vitally interest j i de in the Success of the agriculture i its and will not be satisfied until the fullest possible measures looking to their betterment and removal of any inequalities or unfair burdens Are accomplished. It surely is not Neces sary to do this however at the expense of other classes and at the risk of ruination of our great Industrial fabric built up Wmk great care and National efficiency. After declaring that there is no More demand for reciprocity at the present time than there was when that Issue was Defeated at the polls and quoting from president Taft s statement that reciprocity would Only make Canada an adjunct of the United or. Parsons said it i would appear from the propaganda being waged against the manufacturers of. Canada that the chief View presented is that the Tariff is retained solely to the Benefit the manufacturers and to oppress All other classes of the people the farming Community in particular. Manufacturers must speak it is. Therefore quite he said that the time has come when the manufacturers of this country can no longer keep silent either in their own interests the interests o labor or the great National interests of country. It should be remembered that the present Tariff with changes Here and was enacted As a great National policy not for the Benefit of any one class but for the Well being of the nation at Large. No one who is not ignorant of the subsequent history of our Dominion can say that it has not justified its existence. An enormous Revenue had to be raised in any Case and in no other Way can the amount produced by the Tariff be raised so easily and fairly As by the present methods which at the same time incidentally give reasonable Protection to our great manufacturing industries. Favors Trade Board. I manufacturers feel that the tar Liff could and should to changed Here and there and so amended that it would apply More scientifically tha a i it does at the present time. For this and other reasons the manufacturers would like to see created what might be termed a Trade and Tariff Board. I such a Board to be composed of representative men of actual expert j i ence and wide knowledge of com i Mereial conditions and whose Broad j i Outlook and vision would lit them. Particularly for the proper study of these great questions so vital to our National interests. This Board would report to the government from time to time 7k removal Sale Price of w. And m.
