Out of the head received in september were feed ers or roughly More feeders Han were marketed in september 1917. Of these feeders Eastern can Ada got head and the United states head or considerably More than 50 per cent of All the feed ers marketed at Winnipeg. While in 1917 the United states got just one third of the feeders marketed in sep tember. During the nine months end i Tucei time to time there bobs u Kihns Lastic Prapa Sanda for a Variet of wheat which has appeared unde i. Titles of Alaska egyptian an Jon any. Always this wheat is t Tild 100 to 150 bushels to the acre. Is a a and new discovery. When Texas boomed As Alaska it was to have been found on the of Alaska and was therefore. Socially Hardy and suitable to Wra err. Conditions and the 0 it to make everybody s for this year there has been quite a of this wheat in Manitoba Saskatchewan and of it have been found Here Aid there All Over the country Espe Pally among the non English speak ice Stilers. The seed seems to have Mae pretty generally from North Dakota and is known under the name of Laava. A Sample of this wheat Broast to the free press some time ago from Fisherton be the lakes with the report that Cost durable quantities of it had been and a of sold for seed next year. The Sample looked so like our old Friend the egyptian which at one time was sold for a Bushel that it was sent Rao professor Harrison who is in targe of the Ilfeld husbandry de Marta int of the Manitoba agricultural co siege. I dealing with the subject in there Are eight distinct types of teat arranged in order of Merit which Are 1. Common or milling wheat. 3. Durum or Macaroni wheat. S. Club wheat. I. Emmer wheat. J. Spelt wheat. 5. Poulard wheat. Polish wheat. Einkorn. Wheat. Under the common Type we have the milling cheats Euch As mar red Fife Turkey red Etc. In were responsible for it that it was found growing on shores of Alaska. It is therefore pending la Hardy because of its ranching head it would yield 150 Maheu to the acre it also being a Grain was hard and Good the agricultural at Washington investigated it concluded that i would probably it steer. Bushels per acre was Itutti Eairy useless for milling of very is use for Macaroni and no hardier a he common cheats and closed mails in the United states to the 1 have found this summer 1 there has been a Large amount 10 this stuff grown in Small patches i plots throughout the province i specially among the ruthenian. It be Wise therefore if the papers would make it in the value of this Grain which Pinion is absolutely nothing. S shown to and extent it will 15 mined with our Good cheats no 1913, the United took out of Western Canada head of Young cattle and while All Are classified a at least 40 cent of them were Breed no this Showa that in spite of the efforts being made by the do minion and provincial governments to this class of Stock in the country tha liquidation it very heavy and that toot at a time Western Canada had no Breeding Stock to spare. It must be that All Breeding Stock going into the United states is tuberculin tested and the re actors left in Canada. It begins to look As if the govern ments would have to do More than get lower freight rates to move cattle to feed and feed to cattle and similar measures and that it May be Neces Mcmana Idaho Washiington. And Oregon Are clamouring for cars and it is doubtful if the stuff awaiting an Opportunity to reach Market will get on Trie rails this Side of Christmas. Western breeders have been hit hard by the break. Down at Washington they Are do ing some hard thinking. Since Hoover returned from Europe a has been planning to Send move meat across the water. At least one Bil lion pounds More than were exported in the first nine months of 1918 Wii be needed next year in his opinion and As beef will be scarce pork must make Good the deficiency. For october the minimum Price of hogs has been fixed at 118, but As it is based on Cost of Corn it is probable tha. Will be determined on for no vember. The food administration is anxious to Avert premature Market ing of hogs to ensure a Supply of meats for military purposes. A. Washington they expect exports Dur ing the coming year to take fro per cent of the product that goes into packers cellars which will put the civilian population on Short rations. Heau current cattle marketing is on an enormous scale. At All Points Dur ing september approximately 000 head were handled or More than last year. During the first nine months of 191s about cattle read Heuthe markers of the United states against last year. Hog receipts show an in crease of Over the same period of 1917, and sheep a Sain or head. Omaha received sheep and lambs in septem Ber that heavy run representing liquidation owing to drouth in the Par cent. Marketed about 75 per cent of the beef to be gathered West of the Missouri rive this year has already Sone to agricultural and livestock hews sary for the governments to buy and feed this Young Stock in order to pre vent the country being denuded of Breeding heifers. There is a shortage of feed in some sections but there is no such Short age of feed As to warrant this whole Sale reduction of Young Stock. The United states through its Bureau of markets has announced that it Abandons the weight test for carcases for the army and Navy until this week the buyers for the Navy rejected All carcases no matter what their Quality that did 575 pounds dressed. The army buyers started at that figure but some time ago came Down to 475. The result of this test was to make it difficult to got a Supply for the army and Navy while much Choice beef entirely suitable for the feeding of the men found a very slow Market. Overseas seem incapable of is be hoped the buyers will follow suit. Jiey thing Tring this action in the United states will increase the demand for our feed cattle to go to that Market. If the same regulation is nut an Force n Canada it will mean a Price for feeders Here that should be some inducement to Stock men to try and feed More at Home. Between the lakes in the country East of Nec and in the Northern part of the or Vinco there is an abundance of feed for thousands of cattle in excess o the numbers now in these districts and there is no excuse for the feed ing of Stock not being undertaken. There is a shortage of labor of course but not a shortage As to impossible to to Are quotable to at stops nearly every thing Little beef has been acc in villages and the Trade we be Ona hand to Mouth Basla a.1 Winter regardless of peace or War. C., writes Grain inspectors Millers and com Mission men Are calling attention to the great amount of ergot in Rye thak is coming in. This was to be expected because the season toward the close was favourable As was shown in Tho remarkable development of when rust about the Middle of August ergot also is a Plant disease but Dif fers from All other fungus diseases in producing hard Black lumps which resemble somewhat the seeds of the Grain. These hard Black lumps re semble Burnt wheat and some people suppose them to be some vile week seeds whereas they Are just the vegetative stage of the fungus Dis ease called ergot. These hard lumps Are always purple on the inside and. In this Way they can be told from Burnt wheat or Burnt Rye. They Are also about twice the size of the Grain itself and this enables Millers to screen them out if they Are not broken but very often they Are broken during threshing and then it is difficult to screen them out. This year in oilers report about 50 per cent of them being broken. The Miller is concerned because they not Only Darken the flour but they contain a Strong drug called erg Tum which has a detrimental effect on the Ner Vous system. Cattle eating Ergo Ted Hay Are troubled with abortion and in Central and Eastern Europe where the people Iive upon Black bread or Rye bread it is Well known that which is very plentiful in Rye produces dire results hence the Millers Are inclined to reject samples of Grain with ergot which they cannot screen out. Rye is most susceptible to ergot Barley next then wheat. It is never found on Oats but is found Oil Many grasses tha worst of which is Blue Stem or Blue joint a tall growing wild grass and the chief cause of Ergo Ted Hay. Ergo Ted Hay can be recognized by the dirty oily oiled Heads of Blue Stem with Little Lack seeds projecting. Ergot can be easily spotted in Grain by its Black Olor usually much larger than Grain in Rye often Over half an Inch Ong slightly Bent but having a Groove the same As a Large Rye Grain and showing purple when broken Millers must see that they do not go open. These should be screened out before broken if possible and the through the Rolls with the flour.
