16 Manitoba free press. Winnipeg. Wednesday. April the forum a column for the discussion of All matters of interest j to the Farmers of Western i letters to editor Farmers forum Canadian co operative Wool growers from other sources such As the Sale of goods manufactured from Cana Dian and shepherds supplies. The Canadian co operative Wool association which was or j Gani Zed in february 1d1s, last War year celebrated its seventh birth 1 Day last week and having passed successfully through a number of in j fan tile ailments is non As Lusty a i i youngster is Tiu fond parents could j desire. It is a purely co operative organization Thuro has been no contract i or pledge 10 compel its contributors to Send their Wool for Sale through it every your it has had no financial assistance from either Dominion or i provincial governments its authorized capital is Only of which Only has been paid up never j the less it has today assets valued by j the auditors after Liberal allowances for depreciation of buildings and furniture at just under a to i serve fund of Over and Lias handled for the Wool of can Ada in the seven Yoars of its exist ence a tends of Canadian Wool or an average of pounds annually or roughly about one third of the Canadian clip reach ing the. Markets and All of this in Tho face of the 50 per cent decrease in the sheep population of Canada due to the heavy slump in. Values immediately following Tho War. This is a remarkably Good showing and Indi Cates what he fit rec is can do to help themselves when they get Busy. Tho Ope rat Luar costs for the past three years hive Ljeon held at 2i cents per Pound of Wool handled which is the lowest operating Cost of any organization of a co opera Tive character on the North american continent. This has Only been accomplished by increasing Revenue is a margin Between capital subscribed and paid up of 514.559.10, a number of shares Stii unsold and now is an excellent Opportunity for men who Are beginning in sheep to take at least one share and pay for it in full. This be More Vahia tie to the organization than to sell the shares in Large blocks As it would Widen the interest and the Man with a share in the association Koukl naturally be inclined to Market his Wool through it. Tha number directors per prov Ince is determined by the number of shares held in that province arid the number of Delegate shareholders who can go from any one province 10 at tend Tho annual meeting is deter mined in tie same Way. In order to maintain Tho co operative character of Tho association no matter How Many shares an individual might buy he can Only have one vote in determining who shall represent his province the annual meeting so i that in at any time the Wool growers of a province should Chance to to Dis satisfied with the Way the business of Tho association is being conducted they have Only themselves to blame for not having a larger say in the management. Incidentally there Weis nothing it Praise at the annual meeting this year of the Way in Shirli the business had been conducted. The net profit is a very satisfactory one and the dividend of i Trot por cent., to be issued on paid up capital March 31, will amount to about a portion of that dividend is what every producer misses by not having n share in the company and marketing through it. To would suggest that the various sheep breeders associations through out the West take a hand and Start a Campaign to sell these shares. The four Western provinces contribute the largest percentage of the Wool handled indeed it is freely admitted i that the Range wools of Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan Are essential to the successful operation of the association yet the East could to Day out vote the West on icy important Issue should opinion be so divided. Take. For example the question of a contract on lines Simi Lar to the wheat poo contract which is a question that will unquestionably come up for decision at the next an Nual meeting. We think that this is a suggestion Well Worth the consideration of All Wool producers in the West. The association had two very Dis Tinct tributes to its efficiency at the Manitoba s Champion pulling team team of owned by t. Lane of Brandon which won the horse millin contest of the 1925 Winter fair and Carne very close to beat off the world s record. The Wisest thing is to have on hand this remedy which for fifty years has been bringing Relief to thousands. Take annual meeting. One was from Cuiris Jensen one of Tho Bis Range sheep men of Southern Alberta. He was ardently advocating a contract and using himself As an illustration of How if a Man were not tied up by a contract he was be beguiled into Selling away from his organization at times. He said i sold through the co operative one year and lost a Little Money. I was annoyed and the following year i sold outside Only to find that my neighbors who stayed with the co operative had made very much More than i had by Selling outside. In other words. I have checked on the seven years Selling and found that if i had stayed with the co operative every year i would have been very much further of course that is the real secret of successful co operative Selling not necessarily a profit every year but a satisfactory profit Over a period of the other tribute was paid by or. Ackroyd the association s broker at Boston who has done All the Selling of co operative Wool that has gone to Tho United states. His message was that one of the largest Woollen Mills in the United states had asked Tho Opportunity of bidding on All the Canadian co operative would handle this season of two particular grades of Wool. Before the Canadian co operative was established the United states did not know that Canada had any grades of Wool. It was pointed out in with the annual meeting in 1924. The very valuable work done by the co opera Tive in increasing the use of Home grown wools by the Canadian manufacturers and also in. Securing markets in Britain that never existed before. During the disturbed condition of All markets in the United states which invariably occurs during a presidential year the Sre was Little Selling possible and this rendered the British connection All the More Valu Able and sales to Britain were materially increased. The Canadian co operative woo grower limited has put Canadian wools on the map both at Home and abroad and Wool producers in All parts of Canada would be Well and to give this their own organization their cordial support not Only by contributing their Wool but by doing All in their Power by judicious Breeding and feeding of their sheep and care of their Wool to make pos sible greater Success in the future and by investing in Tho remaining shares of the association. Correspondence Early maturing Field Corn editor Farmers forum the experience of Corn growers in 1924 is this that such varieties of Corn As Squaw and Towe s Alberta Flint will Ripen practically every season. Howe s Alberta Flint a a new variety and is not yet available in a commercial Way. Native Squaw Corn has been grown for Garden Pur poses for Many years. Why has it not come into general use As a fled Corn because of its Low yield of Grain and fodder and the fact that have no harvesting machinery that will Cut below its ears which grow very close to the ground. We grew this variety for Field purposes years ago and quit growing it for the above reasons. Experiments spread aver years have shown a Way to overcome these difficulties. First in regard to Low yield the ears of these Early flints from four to eight ounces. An car of Corn of the varieties grown in the Corn Belt weighs from eight ounces to one Pound. The yield of Squaw Corn can be increased by thicker planting without decreasing the size of the ear. If the rows Are spaced three feet apart and the seed dropped one Kernel every six inches or in Hill planting rows three feet apart and Hills two and a half feet apart in the Row we have twice As Many plants per acre As when Corn is planted by the Ordinary method. We have planted this Corn one half Bushel of seed per acre and have had a satisfactory crop. Yields of 20 to 40 bushels of ear Corn can be obtained that is seventy pounds her Bushel. New method of cutting we have found the machine de scribed above will Cut any Low grow ing variety of Corn. The principle is this a steel Blade modelled after the cutting Blade on a Brush Cutter runs along the surface of the ground and cuts the Corn stocks just above the roots the machine cuts two rows at once. It is drawn by three horse.5 walking abreast the veners will break Down Tho Corn stalks but that does not interfere in any Way with the operation of the machine. Three horses Are needed As the draft is heavy and the cutting Blades must be run at a certain Angle to do effective work. They will not Cut clean if there is Side draft. After the Corn is Cut the rows Are raked crossway with a horse Rake then handled like Hay. The crop can then he handled in a number of ways. If the Grain is wanted Tho Corn May be threshed with an Ordinary Grain separator. We stack Corn cat by this method in Iong narrow stacks. We have never had one oif these stacks heat or Mold in any Way. The Corn May be fed to cattle horses Hong sheep or poultry. Beef steers and hogs can be fattened during the Winter months by feed info them the Loose Corn. To dogs just eat the Ripo Corn other kinds of livestock eat stalks cars and husks. We have been attacking the Corn growing problem from the wrong Angle that a we have been trying to adapt our Corn to existing Corn machinery. To Musi. Perfect Corn machinery to handle types of Corn suited to our climate. Breed Early maturing varieties of yield Corn if we cannot utilize them for win feed in the livestock business we have never fallen Down on the summer pasture problem but for a generation livestock husbandry a nude no Advance among Tho average Farmers. The introduction of the Trench silo and Oil so vet Clover has worked a revolution in livestock Hus Bandry. So will it be with Early ripening varieties of. Corn. The Southern Prairies will Corn the Rich humid of Tho Park Bolt will produce from 40 to 70 bushels per acre of these varieties. When we learn to Kiln dry foul raise our own seed Corn in place of importing our seed we will put Corn growing on a permanent basis. Twenty years ago North Dakota raised very Little seed Corn today we buy a big percentage of our seed there. Between 1908 and 1012 we bred a few varieties or str wins of Early ninth Rizig fled Corn. These varieties ripened in 1915 and 1917 when All other varieties under test were Frozen. We gave up the work be cause these varieties could not be harvested for Winter feed with Ordin Ary machinery. The writer believes the harvesting problem is solved. One machine is needed by Corn that is a cheap attachment for planting Corn in Hills so it can be Cross cultivated that be attached to any Grain Drill. The writer la at work on such a machine and Hopes to have it perfected within a year. The Cost would not exceed Twenty dollars. It will not be patented and any Farmer or Black Smith can make it. Corn growing As a paying proposition on our Prairies must be handled in a big Way just tha same As our Ordinary Small Grain crops. The two horse team has no More place in the Corn Field than in Tho wheat held. Ave must handle Corn with four and six horse teams. The West is the country of big things and our farming operations will never be profitable on a. One Man per farm basis. Gordon Mclarey. Pipestone March 14. Kota wheat editor Farmers forum i was much interested in a letter from Andrew Graham of Roland printed in your Issue of March 11, with refer ence to Kota wheat. I am farming in the Melfort District and seeded -10 Acrea to Kota in 1924. The land was engine slowed and a great Quantity of scrub turned under the growing sea Ion was exceptionally dry and the wheat was sown at the rate of one Bushel and a Quarter per acre. When the crop was fully grown the entire Field stood shoulder High and was a sight Well Worth seeing. It took three and a half pounds of twine per acre to tie the crop the Straw was exceptionally Strong and supple and there was not a tangled sheaf on the enl re Field. The Straw was entirely free from rust while Marquis grown on the next Field was badly rusted. The lower part of the Field sown to Kota was hit by Frost and yielded 18 bushels per acre but the balance yielded 35 bushels por acre and a five acre Field yielded 44 bushels per acre Grade no. 3. Tho average yield in this District for Marquis was about ten bushels. I might mention that i am spelling my Kota Straw at per Load to the Farmers who grew Marquis. So in spite of the discrimination in Price against Kota i am Well pleased with my results and expect to sow 125 acres to this splendid wheat in Tho coming season. Montague h. Wood. Silver Park sask. And. Clubbed wheat grown on an adjoining farm was a total failure. The Ruby grew right alongside of the Kota the Kota withstood the Frost and graded no. 3 while the Ruby was entirely destroyed. Enticement a novel of today by Cliv Earden author of sinners in heaven copyright 1925, by the Babbs Marril co. Production by she Sank into a chair and covered her face with trembling hands. It she wrote what could she say Ter Priblu words had been said on that night after her reeling senses had revived. Neither could Unsay those words nor forget them. A Cable would be necessary to meet his boat. What could she possibly put in a Cable to crush this unbridled mania mrs. Marten s Steps sounded on the stairs. With Quick resolve Leo thrust the paper into the grate Anil struck a match. That much at least she could do. But she watched it Burn her hands clasping and in clasping each other on her Lap in impotent fear. The she kept muttering. Mad idiotic fool where will he land himself and me How can i crush it All make him forget-----7" j a from nowhere the words seemed 10 Rise to be writ in the Little flame in the grate to stretch along the mantel shelf when she looked up to Blaze in the Light of Tho setting Sun. She sprang to her feet and again covered her face and eyes. The now restlessness surged a tidal wave that beat Over through around ail the chaotic thoughts that tumbled about in her mind. And subconsciously Ohe heard doors be ing opened and shut voices a voice. Dropping her hands precipitately she looked up then uttered a. Choking cry. Henry Walls stood in the door Way. He was gazing at her in astonish ment. You left your handbag in the car. I Cate Back with to said coming slowly Forward. A she made no movement save to clutch at a chair Back he Laid the bag on the table. Is All he asked uncertainly. Her head nodded but her eyes never left his face. They Clung to him with an Appeal like that of a dumb animal caught in a hidden snare. For a moment he met the Appeal in silence the pulses hammering in his own body. Then to took a few decided Steps toward her and Laid both hands on her shoulders. All the tenderness that had trans figured his face Tho Day before shone there As he Bent Over her. What is it what is she clutched her Throat nervously every Fibre of her being seeming to weaken under the close clasp of his hands. Unconsciously she swayed toward him and in a moment to had folded his arms about her. And in their Sanctuary a wonderful Peaco unexpectedly descended on Leo. She Drew her own arms they crept up around his shoulders. Don t leave me behind. Don t let me go she whispered so Bingly. He murmured As his lips met hers. Never. Chapter v. The world and the people there in seemed curiously unreal to Leo when she settled into her chair on the deck of the Channel Steamer. That a Short half hour in an almost empty Church could have transformed her into a married woman was surely incredible As if to reassure herself she pulled off her Glove and studied the new Gold ring on her Finger. Then she glanced at the overcoat on tha empty chair beside her own. With a tremulous smile and sigh she Laid her hand on tha coat. It was the instinctive action ownership. Shu possessed. Vaa possessed. The old Bachelor Freedom though delightful appeared Pale in comparison with this wonderful feel ing of possessiveness this Vista of perfect companionship. It was like entering a room alter a Day spent albeit enjoyably in keen frosty air. The last fortnight had whirled by with preparations visits from rela Tives hurried purchases of clothes. Wallis amazed but enraptured by her almost feverish anxiety to go abroad with him had obtained a License and set All the tongues wag Ging around Wollerton. He wan the chief catch of the neighbourhood. Consternation raged. Everybody Felt the Bride must be a designing person. Mrs. Bolten the chief widow murmured poor Henry in the cooing voice she re served for eligible men and it be came the keynote to local opinion. The designing meanwhile did not easily become accustomed to the Novelty of Possession. It had Only grown greater taken new. Turn Ings each Day. There had the evening when Wallis arrived with a tiny Yorkshire terrier to keep Jou from being lonely until i can do so he had said with one of his rare caresses. She Lay Back in her chair now and reviewed with amusement this astonishment of her friends the Relief other relations Susie s letter. The last recollection caused her to laugh aloud. Such haste had seemed extraordinary to conventional Susie. Could t Leo wait and test her self was she quite sure of her own mind did Jar. Walls know Man no she could not understand Leo s heart Thea was such a. Big step. Sam sent a message to say he thought her a very Lucky girl. He admired or. Wallis. This patronizing View of woman in Matri Mony was typical of the reverend Sam Leo reflected laughing again. Then her thoughts turned to the Cable. Soon the newspaper with tier marriage announcement would reach Val he would not realize it had come about so he would at any rate this would crush his mad infatuation. Her glance wandering idly Over the deck encountered that of a freckle faced Young Man who was familiar for some reason. She quickly recognized him. For her com Panion on the last crossing to Calais and smiling at the coincidence. Then broadened brew More softly Radiant appeared. He looked Back in some Surprise. A Strong Breeze was blow ing and the Little White capped Waves danced merrily in the Sun Shine As the boat plunged along. Something of the old ecstacy mingled the warm thrill at her heart caused by his words and proximity. She leaned close to his Arm. She murmured a note in her voice he had not hear there before.
