Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - April 27, 1925, Winnipeg, Manitoba 10 Manitoba free press Winnipeg monday april 27, 1925 Toronto and Montreal exchanges will change trading hours for a week in spite of Day Light saving at new York. I news of the business world Trade and Commerce mines and the Money markets Canadian ave to accept less than 5 per cent on Bonds or issues will go to York or London. Busier than for feature of week is disposal of Manitoba and on Tario Bonds payable . Funds Gairdner Clarke co Toronto ont., april the past week the Par amount of new issues sold was than Haa taken place for some considerable time. Altogether the total of issues disposed of was Over the arg est was province of Ontario 3 per cent. Maturing in two years and maturing in three years which were disposed of to an american Syndicate at an average Price of 08.co in new y Ork funds or a Cost of the province of approximately 4.42 per cent. Tiie province of Manitoba disposed of per cent Bonds made up of maturing in two years at maturing in Twenty years. T3otii these issues were pay Able in new York Uncle for the two year Bonds a Price of 99.s5 new Tork funds or a Cost of 4.5s per cent and for the 20 year Bonds a Price of 94.35 or a Cost of about 4.94 per cent was received. It is significant to note that in both these issues Canadian bids were n it Tor and it is an indication that the american Market for Cana Dian Bonds in still on a higher level than our own particularly in the f. G. Pumpelly who recently Sev ered his connection with a. S. Knight has joined the firm of. Smith fess Denison. Ltd. The traders viewpoint Clark Martin co., 232 Portage ave. The Stock Market made a Strong determined Effort on april -0 to Advance above thou average established on april 16, but As it approached that level it met with Selling mostly from professionals who were endeavouring to ascertain whether stocks had advanced sufficiently. They found the Market in several places very soft and in other places they were Able to create Sharp Rase of Sciort dated notes As there a Breaks. The Market that Day declined pears to be an abundance of funds available in that Market for Maturi ties of this nature. This class Security is very rarely purchased by the private investor but it is a very convenient form of investment for financial and Industrial institutions which have temporary role funds for which they require an investment pending renewed activity in Industrial and commercial channels. Short term finance preferred in connection with the province full Point for the id Stock average. The decline continued for two entire Days following the monday session with rather heavy volume. During the ses Sion of april "2, after driving the mar Ket close to the lows of april 3, shorts began to cover and the Market closed i at the top. During thursday s and Friday s intermittent drives rallies took place. J Tut the average once More after Tiree Days of fluctuation failed to recover its j decline of the three previous Days. Tre 1 Mendouse pressure seems to be p ten Ontario Sale it a interesting to note j the All Sharp bulges and that for some time past now this Par i songs unable of withstand it without ocular province has done its finance i giving consid Crapio ground. Ing1 by the Short term method and j the Market acts As if it intended 03 a matter of fact there has been j to work towards lower Levels. Around Iong dated province of Ontario is Uio sold exclusively for this Market since october 1923. The fact that the provincial treasurer has done his financing in the manner indicated de would appear to he a belief on his part that interest rates on Long term securities will continue to decline and that he will have an Opportunity in the near future of doing his per manent financing at a better rate than prevails at . Also a Factor which is of considerable Bene fit to the province is in keeping away from this Market with Long term financing and it an Opportunity to thoroughly digest the outstanding province of Ontario issues. For some years a tremendous volume of these securities were disposed of in tills Market and consequently due to the numerous issues the province was forced to accept prices which would have prevailed had there been fewer issues. Effects of Sterling parity the Rise of Sterling Exchange Hae present priors it seems unable to at tract sufficient support. Railroad stocks the Railroad Section of the Market did keep up the Good work of the previous week. The average of the 20 stocks fluctuated within Points the entire week. They were further with out leadership and left to shift for themselves. Weakness developed in several issues notably Lenlon Pacific. Drastic liquidation seems to to taking place in that Issue. During Friday s ses Sion shorts taking advantage of its in Herent weakness pressed it to lower Levels and it declined to the 133 level. At that Price Union Pacific is Back on the level of March 1923. Support around present prices will no doubt be Forth coming although so far no such Indi cation is apparent. Southern Pacific refused to follow the decline in Union and maintained its level at the top of the rally. It is still four Points of its High of Janu Ary. Heavy buying has developed that Issue since it touched Par. An other Issue that seers to disregard Canadian March Trade is bigger than last year trend continues of bigger Export and smaller imports marked Rise in Export of animals special despatch to tile press Montreal april the usual sea Sonal expansion is shown in the Cana Dian Trade figures for the month March released from Ottawa Over the week end. Total Trade also shows slight increase of that of March 192 the recent trend is uninterrupted with exports increasing and import falling off although the increase in exports is less marked Ana less. Uniform than it has been in months. I fact five of the nine main groups show exports somewhat smaller the mos notable falling Oft being in Forest pro ducts which Are Down Over Iron and steel exports Are also flow nearly a. Million. On the other Ham an increase of practically 2 1-2 Mil Lions is shown in the Export of animal and their products while non Ferrou metals and their products including Lead and Zinc Are up nearly two i Lions. Imports in six of the nine Mai groups showed declines. The mos notable being in Iron and steel an non metallic minerals including and gasoline the latter item was Abou 3 1-4 millions below the March 132 figure. Imports of textiles etc., showed the most considerable gain of approximately 1 3-4 millions. No changes made in trad1g hours Toronto and Montreal Exchange will Advance clock Canadian press desk Nuclo Toronto april 26. No change being made by the Toronto Stock Exchange and Montreal Stock Exchange the hours of trading for next week when new York is operating on Day Light saving time. Daylight saving be comes effective in Toronto and Mon Treal a week later and in the interval the new York Market will open Anc close an hour earlier than the Oana Dian exchanges. The Standard mining Exchange on the other hand has decided to Advance its hours of trading to conform with he introduction of Daylight saving in new York. Been one of the outstanding events i weakness in that class of Stock is during the past week. It is quite i Southern railway. The Stock has had freely predicted that its return to Par a from 32 to and us is now Only a matter of Days and in this event the probability of Dis posing of Canadian Bond issues in the English Market will probably again become a considerable Factor. With Money cheaper both in new York and in London than Here it would seem that unless investors Are pre pared to pay higher prices for our More important issues that they will have to. Depend largely upon the smaller municipal issues which in View of their comparative obscurity in the United states and great Brit an could be disposed of in those markets. Investors in general Are very reluctant to Purchase below a 5 per cent basis but it would seem to be a question As to whether they Are go ing to to Able to obtain any higher Grade issues around that level. The average private investor who Only became a Bond buyer during the War yearn waen interest rates on High Grade issues As our various provinces were considerably Over 6 per cent., is very difficult to convince that even at present Levels Good Bonds Are considerably Hig her in yield than in pre War years. As an example Long dated province of Ontario Bonds which can Roe had today around 4.s5 per cent to 4.90 nor cent were before the War considered attractive around a 4 per cent basis. Whether yields will in the near future return to that basis is a mat Ter of speculation but in View of the very Large amount of Short Date financing which is taking place it would seem to be the belief of the various provincial and civic authorities that it would be Good business on their part to delay their Long term financing for the near future. Bank Stock sales Canadian press despatch. Toronto april 25. Bank sales 10 Dominion 194h 5 Perial 1s5vi. _ Stock in blend old matured scotch whisky action indicates that a considerable amount of pressure will have to be applied before its healthy Risa can be checked. It behaves As if it intended to Cross its old High. Motor stocks the motor stocks during the Early part of the past week came in for some Sharp attacks from the bearish Frater nity and in several issues were re warded with Success. The spectacular Advance staged by the motor stocks has involved a considerable amount.01 Public participation and in most in stances Stock has passed into weak hands. Mack truck after recording Neil hich prices broke sharply from 152 to 142, on something that looks like liquidation. Studebaker persists in advancing with great Confidence. Again this week it touched the 46 level and has persist enly been accumulated Between 45 and 46 level. General motors reached the 75 level before sufficient pressure forced it Iback. It seems however to meet with considerable support on setbacks and this indicates that still More pressure will have to be applied in order to Stop its Rise. Chandler motors has lost consider Able amount of its Rise on what looks More like prot taking than genuine the Maxwell issues recovered practically their entire decline caused mostly from Short covering. Those issues will fight the decline very stubbornly. Oil stocks the Oil group during the past week made a very Strong bid for speculative attention but for the great part of the time they were entirely ignored. The group average fluctuated within a one Point Range. The volume for the entire group was even lighter than the previous week. i americans displayed consid Erable weakness Selling on april 22 As Low As but recovered its lost ground quickly and then lapsed into inactivity. It looks As if it could Start a pronounced move in either direction. Mariana Oil advanced slightly during the week but much strength is shown As it has great difficulty holding its Advance. Cosden Oil looks As if certain inter ests were accumulating that Issue around the 27 level. It does and Vance far from that Point but is being purchased every time it reacts to it. I Pacific Oil probably made the Strong est Effort to forge ahead of any other member of the group. It advanced sharply from 54 to 6s, on what appears to be Good buying. On recessions the volume diminishes constantly but it becomes very Strong As Tho stocks proceed upward. Steel stocks the steel stocks suffered another week of decided weakness in spite of encouraging reports coming from Dif Ferent quarters of the Industry. United states steel which had displayed remarkable strength up to april is. When it touched lost practically its entire Advance in three Days. The encouraging feature of the decline is the Small amount of stocks that came out. However the Stock had to retrace its step Back to 113, or within half a Point from its last Low before sufficient buying Power was attracted to Check the de c Hie. Bethlehem steel after in Sharp bulges to 43, declined ii Aln to its level from which it seems nimble to Ket out. At that level buying seems to he going on but it us Roon As it advanced. Crucible has fallow ii Jiom and Vance entirely ant Ionics in if it would decline to still lower at present Levels it fails to attract any buying Power whatever. steel and Iron deems to be in the same predicament and the situation looks like still lower prices. Wright new York april of the deepest indigo Hue continue to come from some quarters in connection with the business and Trade Outlook for the balance of tha year. Tho recent decline in Security ands Grain prices have created a doubt As to this real soundness of business conditions and it would seem that Many have been influenced More by the declines in the markets that by the actual facts underlying present conditions. It has been pretty Well proved by the record of business cycles in the last 1 new years that during a period when farm prices Are relatively too Low and the farm country is in a de pressed condition real continuing Prosperity cannot exist. That condition has now come to an least temporarily and probably permanently. This is a Basic Factor to be overlooked in estimating Tho future Industrial trend of things. Much depends on crops much of course this year depends upon the outcome of the crops hut that the agricultural interests have been spurred on to a stronger Effort than Ever a shown by the table of intended planting for 1925, issued by the United states Bureau of Agri culture economics. The comparison is for acreage grown for Harvest in 1d24, placing the latter at 100. Their is an increase in acreage varying from two Par cent to 20 per cent in every farm product mentioned except Irish potatoes and flax prices for most agricultural product Aro much higher today than they were at this time last year and the outcome of the Harvest in View of new conditions surrounding the farms will be looked for with More than usual interest. The rapid Rise in the Security and Grain markets last autumn and Early this Winter was followed by speculative or Long time commit ments on this part of manufacturers. They maintained a conservative pol icy of hand to Mouth buying there by enabling them to curtail or expand production in accordance with current needs and As they have stocked up drastic curtailment of production Wilt be necessary. Such policies have become practicable of course As the result of improved transportation conditions. This gives the manufacturer Assur Ance that Tho conversion of raw materials into finished products and. Their distribution can proceed at a Well ordered Pace. Metal Industry is sound there have been slight curtail ments i n the Iron and steel Indus try and in certain other Lin ifs but this curtailment followed notably High Levels of production. Further More it is important to notice that there is usually a slight recession n All industries in the Spring and sum Mer months a fact which does warrant question of. The stability of present . These curtail ments have Tot been Large enough to affect employment which to increase in practically All lines except meat packing paper products and printing lines. So while Piliere will probably Al ways be those who take a pessimistic viewpoint whatever the condition. The present situation after a Tho rough analysis of Basic conditions May be said to be anything but favourable.
