Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 6, 1925, Winnipeg, Manitoba Manitoba free press Winnipeg thursday August 6, 1925 John Manville largest single producer and manufacturer of Asbestos on continent is not included in merger scheme. News of the business world Trade and Commerce mines and the Money markets Winnipeg electric Street rail Way net earnings in june Are greater than in june 1924. Gross however is less. Johns Manville Asbestos fusion opinion expressed scheme must fail if this Large company does not enter merger special despatch to the tree Preis Montreal aug. That the Johns Mansville company which supplies America with nearly 50 per cent its Asbestos products has signed no agreement to enter the projected Asbestos merger coupled with the news that the big company is not disposed to enter into any agreement was received with Soma Surprise Here wednesday. Had been tacitly understood that Johns Manville like other Man fac tur ering concerns with mines of their own had been linked up by the Bankers negotiating the Deal. There is a feeling among local interests that the Side of those who have opposed the merger has not been adequately presented Here. It is stoutly maintained that the plan As it stands at present would be very Apt to meet with no better Fate than the ill starved Asbestos merger of 15 ago when a number of companies were brought together with a greater capital Load than the properties could Bear. Johns Manville is essential it la contended that any merger without Johns Manville would be unsound being pointed out that the rate of growth of this company indicates that their very substantial percentage of the total United states Asbestos manufacturing business will be greatly increased before Long. It la even suggested that the business of the company might expand to the extent that it would become the Only considerable purchaser of Asbestos and it is further maintained that its purchases of properties in the Cana Dian Field in augmentation of its . Mines would place it in a Posi Tion to meet its greater requirements for Asbestos to an even greater extent than at present with the pro duct of its own mines. Thus it is argued that the big merger might find itself in the position of having Only a limited and constantly dwindling Field of. In dependent manufacturing companies to sell to which would be a situation that would Bear heavily upon such a company As the present merger plan would create. It is pointed out that the liquid position which makes Asbestos corporation so Strong would present a much less impressive appearance Pread around Over the companies which would be taken into the merger. Gold Standard finds defender when attacked Churchill replies to critics asking for suspended judgment on return to Gold associated London aug. Britain s return to the Gold Standard which during recent weeks has drawn Forth a swelling though discordant chorus of Adverse criticism from various sources was staunchly de fended today in the House of com Mons by Winston Spencer Churchill Chancellor of the exchequer. Unquestionably or. Churchill declared the Gold Standard affected everything to a certain degree and any one could argue from that fact that everything disagreeable which had happened since the Gold stand Ard was restored was due to its restoration. But disagreeable things always were happening he remarked. He then asked that the govern ment s action be judged not by fluctuations occurring Over Short per lids but by its value in the Long run. If England had not taken the action she the Chancellor continued the British pm pure would have taken it without us and come on to a Gold Standard not of the Pound Sterling but of the entirely unrepentant the Chancellor said he was cognizant of the growing tide of criticism and propaganda against the Gold Standard but he pointed out that the critics disagreed among them selves and that no political party had challenged the government to action. The government was entirely in the immediate inspiration of the Chancellor s statement was a speech by the Laborte member. Lee Smith who said the return to Gold Standard was More responsible than anything else for the recent increase in unemployment. It meant he declared that in order to compete abroad exporters must reduce their Export prices 10 per cent to offset the 10 per cent Rise in the value of the Pound.
