Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 8, 1925, Winnipeg, Manitoba Manitoba free press Winnipeg saturday att test 8, 1925 Amateur Golf event Mclean and Cuthbert in Amateur Golf final Polo game today should be fast and hard Pought continued from twelfth with a Par four the thirteenth with a Birdie three and Squar ing the match on the fifteenth with another sparkling three. Cuthbert had a wonderful Opportunity to assume the Lead at the Lone sixteenth where he followed a lengthy drive with a Fine Iron shot to the Ereen. Wilson hooked to the rough and recovered poorly to the Edge of tie Green put his approach putt Stone dead Lay ing ont Hbert a stymie and the latter took three putts and was Only Able to the Hole. Wilson again hooked 3. Mashlor shot to the Short seventeenth and found himself in the awkward Posi Tion of being one own and one to go when Cuthbert was Down in Par. A half in Par fives at the final Hole finished one of the toughest Battles seen for Many years. Fine game. Taking it from All angles the March was More worthy of Tho final than for entry into the Semi final stage. Wilson was slightly unfortunate in passing out of the tournament after playing three Days of Well nigh perfect Golf. Cuth Bert s round of Al was unique in tile fact that it included not a single Birdie his card Only showing two occasions where to failed to play Par Golf. Wil son s Mascle and Putter almost pulled out a Victory for him on the last Pine holes of play where he turned what looked like certain defeat into so Mai thing that came very close to Victory. R. D. Mclean who has Only recently come to the City from Edmonton produced some phenomenal work with his Putter against Bryan. O Kelly in the morning round. To took an Early Lead when o Kelly found a hopeless lie in a Divot Hole off the tee at the first Mclean was out in 33, but the game was anybody s up to that Point. O Kelly was again in Portunato when he found a Gopher Hole off his drive to the ninth where he gave up the Hole. Long puts for Birdie threes at the 13th and 14th gave Mclean Tho match by 5 and 4. K. C. Allen and w. A. Stephen started off the Day s play and the latter was returned the Victor by virtue of some Fine putting after mediocre Golf on the part of both up to the greens. Alex. Black had a great struggle wit ii Arthur land in his first round of the Day. The match eventually going to two extra holes before a decision was arrived at. Land s tee shots have been one of the Bright spots of the tournament and he would have been a touch to beat if he had been Able to follow them up. Black s steadiness however pulled him through in the end. Black showed better form against Cuthbert in the afternoon. Che latter started off brilliantly to gain a Lead of three at the end of the sixth but Black Pat a Chip shot dead for a four at the Long seventh against the wind and Cut Down his opponent s Lead to one at tha ninth with another perfect four. From then Cuthbert gradually forged until he emerged the Winner on the 16th Green which he reached with a Long drive and a Jigger shot for a Birdie four. All that Black lacked was a Little More distance off the tee which would have made Many of his second shots much easier. Tun up shots were invariably accurate and his put Ting was steady throughout. Art Stephen did Well to reach the Semi final stage of the championship. He has had Little experience in events of this nature but it is Safe to say hat he will be heard from More in the future. He fell Down somewhat in his match against Mclean yesterday afternoon but nervousness rather than bad Golf was the reason. Mclean s feat in reaching the final in his first appearance in a Manitoba championship is remarkable. Last year lie reached the Semi final stage of the Alberta Amateur tournament where he was beaten by Carson Mcwilliams. It was Only in the previous year that he met Douglas , the present title Holder of tie Chinook province in the Junior championship and beat him by a wide margin. While without the same experience As Cuthbert he be depended upon to make a great ibid for the title today. Second flight h. M. Stratton. Of a Crest and Frank Chisholm. Of Norwood will Battle today in the final of the second flight. Strat ton continued to play Golf More worthy of the championship division and won two easy matches from j. M. Blair in the morning and j. Congalton after lunch. Chisholm disposed of r. A. Robison and Foster Woolley who won the Junior honors two years ago. Wool Ley held Chis Horn to a two and one verdict in spite of the latter s steady play of 41 out and 43 Home. Yesterday s results Are As follows championship flight morning round w. A. Stephen beat k.
