Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 9, 1927, Winnipeg, Manitoba Manitoba free press Winnipeg v it Alyi 9, 1927 free press correspondent at Portage sent in news budget from Plains City then thriving settlement Over fifty three years of a Long life As i Pioneer Ana literary Man. Our romantic Canadian Story is a mine of character and incident for the port and novelist framed too in a matchless so wrote Chas. Mair 26 years ago. In the preface to the second edition of his magnum opus mar at the time of his death at Victoria on thursday Nad been for close on eighty nine years a is to say Ever since his birth on sep tember 21. 183b. It is 59 years since Chas. Mair by stage and Democrat Over the Dusty Highway into the Huie Village of then called Winnipeg but fort Garry. The Only signs of life along the he wrote later were the creaking and jolting bed. River Mair s life in the East had been uneventful he had been born in the lumbering Village of Lanark he had been educated at the Lanark school the Perth grammar school and Queen s University he had embodied his boyhood recollections of the upper Ottawa country in a Book dream land and other published to was on the Edge of thirty and received kindly by the critics he had engaged the Friendship of the honorable William Mcdougall. Through whose influence he had been appointed paymaster to the party of Exive ors sent to the red River country. At an age when most Young men of his Day were established in business and set in their Mair s Outlook fresh and Boyish his mind still pliant and the Romance of his life ahead of him instead of behind. Enthusiastic and observant he wrote East from the House of Monsieur Amable Ducharme the ignorant yet somewhat agreeable old fellow from whom we rent our Headquarters that the new Northwest was land upon whose bosom has withered the proc Reant vegetation of centuries a land which drops fatness As if in fulfilment of a prophecy Gen Erous and abundant and More Dur Able than its Stormy honeymoon year the Survey party commencing operations at Chene. Where the Prairie ended and the Forest worked All the Winter of 68 upon tin construction of an immigrant Road the Lake of the Woods to fort Garry. But the most important pert Yonai event of that season to Charles mar was his introduction to Elizabeth Mckenney. Whom he met at the House of her Uncle. Or. John Schultz. Miss Mckenney was 18 and at the time the most Marriageable girl in red River and perhaps the Young author with the new literary Hon. Ors of dreamland upon Tom was the most Marriageable Young Man. The two. Were married on september 8, 1869. The Louis Kiel trouble was brew ing when the two left fort Garry by Pony and Democrat on their Honey Moon trip 10 St. Paul. It had broken out when they arrived in fort Garry late in the fall. Both or and mrs. Mar were imprisoned in fort Garry. Mrs. Afterwards found shelter at the House of William a Wrever on the present Southwest Corner of Portage Avenue and main Street and when Matr. A Little later escaped from fort Garry she followed her husband in male Dis Guise and joined him at Portage la Prairie. After a very Short stay at Portage la Prairie. Mair continued his flight to St. Paul and thence went East to Toronto. An event of this time was the organization by mar and his friends of the Canada first party pledged to loyalty to the new can Adian confederation. It was through the intervention of this group that the Wolseley expedition was Des patched to red River. M Ember of free i Russ staff with the end of the rebellion. Charles Mair returned West. Until about 1876, he was engaged in the fur Trade and general business at Portage la Prairie and his advertise ments As a merchant at that place a Ocean in the issues of the Manitoba free press. Or. Mar was the port la Prairie correspondent of the free press until his removal to Prince Albert in 1877. The move to Prince Albert was in acc stance with Charles Mair s native Scortt of pioneering and love of the West. The Prince Albert locality was at the time the habitation of Many pioneers of the old red River settlement. The old wast was making its last stand there and Gabriel it mint had organized the Metis confederacy who lived m the ancient Way on River lots along the Saskatchewan. It was the Mem Orv of the clash Between the surveyors and the Metis in the red River country a dozen years before which impelled or Mair to re move his family out of harms Way As the Dominion surveyors and the car appeared on the horizon of Canada s last West. In 1882 he went East Wlton mrs. Mair and the children settlin in Windsor. Ontario from which place he did not return West till he came As a Volunteer in the Chas. Mair late notable Canadian poet author of and former member of free press news staff. Force sent to suppress the rebellion of 1885. Which. Mair had foreseen and which he had earnestly tried to Avert. In this expedition Mair served As quartermaster in the governor Gen eral s body guards commanded by the late col. G. T. Dennison. Mccu Miseli it was during his period of rest and tranquil Ltd in the East in 1882 4, that Charles mar in his forty fifth year composed his masterpiece the drama of Charles g. D. Roberts a Young pro Fessor of the mar times who was then making his own Mark in the literary world wrote the Promise of dream land has been very much More than fulfilled. It is by far the finest thing Canadian poetry has pro published in 18ss. Gives in Rich simple language scenes and sentiments from the period of the great Indian chief. One typical passage of Tecumseh runs there was a time Oil this fail continent when All things throne in spacious peacefulness the prosperous forests unmolested stood. For where the Stalwart Oak grew there it lived Long Ages and then died among its kind. The hoary Pines those ancients of the brimful of legends of the Early world stood thick on their own mountains a subdued. And All things else illumined by the Sun. Inland or by the lifted wave at rest. The passionate or Calm of the skies no artist Drew but in the Auburn West innumerable faces of fair Cloud vanished in silent darkness with the following the settlement of the out break of 1385. Or. Mar resumed Busi Ness at Prince Albert. He afterwards removed to Kelowna b.c., of which be was one of the founders. Subsequently he joined the immigration service at Winnipeg and was later in interests of this work to Lethbridge and Coutts and was re Lieving officer at fort Steele. . In 1899 he was English Secretary to the scrip commission which concluded the peace River treaty with the indians the North. His Book through the Mackenzie Basin gives an interesting account of the journey in this connection. During the latter part of his life Charles mar resided with his Daugh Ter. Mrs. E. J.
