Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - October 11, 1927, Winnipeg, Manitoba Manitoba free press Winnipeg tuesday october 11, .1927 sir Robert Borden s address advises to loyally support their new Leader whoever he May to services rendered to country by conservative party in not seek leadership but held it Twenty years. Select your Leader and when you have selected him. Stand by him who j Ever he May was one of the messages de j levered by sir rot err. Borien. Former prime minister when speaking at the National conservative convention which was opened with great eclat at the amphitheatre rink yesterday morn ing. Sir Robert caused an enthusiastic outburst of applause by declaring that in the past co years the conservative j party had rendered service that made it deserve of the country. The j former prime minister expressed him self As bins optimistic about the Salv return of the conservatives to or. But he warned that the Mere attainment of Power was not in itself i Success and thai depended upon j real achievement. I introduces speaker. I introducing sir Robert Borien the j a k. Foyil. Recalled that he j had been a member of the Bouse of i commons when sir Robert was selected loader of the party. The party had suffered Deff it Anci six hours of the House found itself Leader 1c5.-s. The appointment of sir Robert i Borien Lac been moved by or. Baxter. Of Hamilton and seconded by or. J Boyd. I sir Eort in said is the i most harmonic is convention 1 Ever k a. Up to the present. I Hope it j v. Ill a so to the end. I have a Rood Deal of experience with i caucuses and is a sort of general t caucus of the party irom Over the Sik Kot Init Bokdee. Dominion. In All my experience i saw anything so delightfully harmonious As has been evidenced morning. That invitation that was just extended by the chairman also seemed to be particularly pertinent. Your chairman asked you to remain seated and if there is one thing which is desired by the conservative party it is just that. That is also probably a Happy recalling his own Early experiences in the leadership of the party sir Robert continued a did not want the position of Leader of the Liberal con ,01-vc-Tive party at that time nor in fact at any time for two reasons. In the first place 1 Aid not think 1 was qualified for it. And in the second p lace i Dici not desire it. And on the second night of the caucus 1 accepted for one year Only. They came to me after the caucus was Over and they said if you make any announce ment of that kind it will interfere with your authority is temporary Leader so i accepted it for one year and i remained Leader for Twenty years ind had the unique distinction of leading a political party in opposition longer think than Man in . Trill u to Cartler. I would like to Nurte just a slight addition to some of the words that fell from my Friend or. Baxter in his very Able speech. I should like to remind you that there is another great Canadian without whom con federation could not have been brought about. I refer to Georges Etienne Cartler without whom Quebec would nor have been brought into confederation and his memory should be in our hearts when we consider the record of the treat party to which we o be allegiance. Today we Bear the portrait of sir John a. Macc Lonald on our hearts and his memory within our hearts. We have on the platform his honoured son. Sir Hugh John Macdonald. Long May he live. Only prehistoric Fossil i really did anticipate that i should have the pleasure of coming to convention nor that i should have the Honor of addressing you. Now that i am Here i am sure i cannot do any Good and it is my most Earnest Hope that 1 shall not do any harm. In 1916, after the parliament building at Ottawa had been burned we went on in the Royal victorian museum. We did not miss a Clay at All. That was not a bad record a you will admit. There were come very curious inscriptions established there before to moved into it and some Bounder whose identity has never been discovered took one of those inscriptions and placed it upon the room appropriated for the sittings of the Senate. If Man had Ever been found out he would have been sent to the Tower. We have no Tower today but we would have had one built. The inscription was prehistoric fossils which was singularly inappropriate but it is pm tremolo appropriate to my appearance Here today. What can a prehistoric Fossil say to such in Assembly As . Vibrating with life and enthusiasm i can Only say it is the great est political convention Ever held in Canada and i join in the words of congratulation to the Solen decl com Mittee which organised it and to in Altman. The regular seating accommodation taxed almost to the limit while in the Central Arena reservations were made for the delegates. Long before the concert was scheduled to Start people began to file into their seats and shortly the rink was filled with the largest crowd it has Ever held. All arrangements were in the a ends of the Winnipeg conservative association with or. P. E. Warriner in charge. Little difficulty was experienced by the committee in the handling of the crowd. Kellogg s All bran is guaranteed to conquer constipation. Eat not less than two tablespoonfuls every morning and that amount at Cymry meal if the Case is chronic. All bran is delicious Rith Honey and milk or Cream. Sold All grocers. Made in London Canada. For you sometimes to you Are also Hitman its favors in Raj system. We had in country As in ill British dominions democratic 4vea ment carried on by the party system it is easy to Point out defects but until someone can devise something i think Canada and All the better other British countries must continue under system. The highest Ideal of party government would be two parties United in generous rivalry in the service of the state. Human nature being what it is we do not always attain that highest Conception but we in the conservative party must continue to aim at that Ideal. The conservative party has governed country for More than half of the 60 years that have elapsed since confederation. During that time the Prin Ciple has been followed by the conservative party that Canada shall control her own destiny. Canada has Fol Lowed that leadership. The highest Praise that could be Given a statesman of old was that he should deserve Well of his country and i suggest to you that your party during those 60 years has deserved Well of country but to that statement i would like to add one thing and that is that no party can live on its past record and traditions not on these alone. They Are splendid As inspiration and stimulus to higher efforts but we must look Ever to higher usefulness and service. Predicts Early Ilc Thirn i for one do not in the least doubt the Early return of the conservative party to Power but i must add that the near attainment Power is 3iot in itself Success. It gives the part in Opportunity to attain Success in service to the country but it is not Success in itself. There Are splendid opportunities for great service in can Ada. Let us always have implicit condense in ourself and our destiny. Urges loyalty to Leader As to the suggestion of a Leader. What have i to say about that to o words. Select your Leader Aid after you have selected him stand by him. Being human he May not always be right but perhaps it would be As Well remember that and that occasionally when you think he is wrong he May he right. Then i would suggest another thing. If you Are going to select a Leader Pray Bear in mind that the Leader ought to have something to say about the definition of policies. There Are Idle great principles of Cox Rise to which the great Liberal conservative party has always been committed but to define a policy a detail Pray Bear in mind that country is developing and you must forestall a Leader who is responsible to you and the whole country for the policy which is being prepared. Should put Canada first. Let your policy always stand for Canada s place As a fully autonomous j nation within the British common j wealth of nations. Questions we 1 must approach and consider and he Liberal conservative party with its new Leader can approach them with a firm heart. Once More i say to the new Leader whoever he May be Trust to the rank and file. In my experience As Leader for nearly Twenty year. I found my highest inspiration in the unswerving loyalty from Liberal conservatives from one of the coun try to the other. Without that i could not have persevered to the end and i am sure the new Leader will find his highest inspiration in that splendid loyalty and for him is my last word let smooth Success be strewed before his feet and on his urow sit Laurel led so Delegate asserts Given t ivc your term Toronto oct. Have worked four elections successfully mrs. J. Netter Fiell reports Toronto women conservatives Are organized according to mrs. A Netter Fiell Delegate from Ward 5, Toronto women s. We Cio not Rush up and Down the Street to pick up John and get him to us just because he is a she said. But if he has the ability and fills the place it becomes different. The right to represent a Community must be earned. I do not think a member is often foisted on a Community. The Pec pie know and take care of that i certainly do not believe in a woman s mrs. Black averred. But i do believe in co operation within the party by both just As co operation is needed in the Home.
