Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - October 12, 1927, Winnipeg, Manitoba T Manitoba free press Winnipeg wednesday october 12. 1922 six nominal for leadership of conservatives continued from Page that Vitell make deals with groups of men in order to retain themselves in is worthy of remaining in Ofhie. There Are things More dear than Pover. Is the last consideration t .-.at. Should influence our party except the extent that it enable us to utilize instruments we have in our hands incl to see that car policies grow i Rulison. It matters no if be achieve Power in that . If Tiro Loyal to these tilings and to our vision by our acts by our conduct and by urge we can accomplish much. Tii history of Canada is the his tory of the conservative party in or out of Power. Those Pui us out of Power our policies so that the history of this co mrry is the his tory of the Arkle Vemont of the conservative party in or out of in conclusion or. Bennett in re to the result of the whatever it i be Nicl i shall continue to do my duty whether it be As a Humble worker with the stones or the architect of the Manion or. John ?.l. Robb an eloquent n support of the candidature of or. Minion. I first crime in Ron tact with or. Man Jon 20 a Hon Werc students at the speaker recounted. I then that he a Yount Briliant Nan who v fc3 to Rolio in Ever of Endeavor he in to he a to died a member of Tho Dominion parliament of a of fort a Iliin and for ten in of presented that tiding. During that time he has con our Elert Lons a in won. All of them by live majorities that his . Heir during thas Dominion or. Railed to Idyk a to . The then present Lender it. Hon. Arthur Melg lie for p. Ina of Only 45 years or age. I to say that Hon. Or. Manion is placed in a unique position to represent the Entac do minion of Canada. He is a representative so situated that he is equally be tween East and he has Many qualities by which he the great party in Canada. I have known him. As i said before As a Broad minded Young Man. But of later years i have come to know him As a Man More than that. No Man present Here tonight received a greater Educa Tion than or. Manion received when he stood up in the trenches during Tho great. War and fought Side by Side with of the in conclusion the speaker voiced the opinion that or. Man ton had every Quality which would enable him to Lead the conservative party to Success and he sure that the doctor would put in Force the policy the party had Laid Down. Perhaps after All this was not a real political gathering but a notional gathering seeking to formulate a policy for the whole Dominion and not Lor any Section. Or nil moment Wilfred s. Haney. M.a. Sarnia. Ont. Who seconded the motion said he was never prouder in his life than this evening because he realized what a tremendous National gathering this was. As he declared we desire that Canada shall go on and on and that it shall be built up As we desire that it should be built. We arc desirous of building up a National Pollov of Kolck to in Veness and we be Lieve that it is the right of every Canadian to procure a living from or on his own soil. Or. Haney was convinced thai or. Manion was endowed with All the necessary qualities of leadership which would brins the conservative party to tin for and gum the Liberal regime from the seats of the mighty at Ottawa. Kut in i astir Uil rpm pm one or the most enthusiastic receptions which has been accorded to Phu form speaker since the open ing of the convention was that Jeiven to Hon. R. J. Man Ion. Fore William when he took the platform. Re turn ing from the Western front during the late to seek election to his sea in it. He is Vount in politics he is in years and he was a strange in Vout Laiful following a procession of parliamentary veterans who Lunie in succession to the platform. And his plea to the convention was Novar that they elect him. To the Lidei i hip Only that whoever they should choose As Leader lot their Choice be careful and Well considered and he pledged himself to fall in be Hind him and follow him wherever he nature s Way to health when the doctor says eat bran he Means pure natural 100% bran More doctors Are now prescribing the natural corrective of Bowel troubles. When they say they mean pure natural bran. Tillson s is the clean sterilized bran in the big Dustproof package. Tillson s natural bran clears the intestinal tract completely and regularly of waste and poisons. It is the coating of the roughage nature provides. It ensures mastication thus makes healthy Gums and Teeth. Bake delicious muffins cookies or gems of Tillson s natural bran. Have them on the table at every meal. All the family will relish them. Sprinkle Tillson s natural bran on other cereals and on fruits. Tested recipes for simple bran baking in every package. When you think of the Crisp Hearty ale of old England you naturally think of Bass ale. Brewed at Burton on Trent and bottled by leading English bottlers. N m Good word Geml should Lead. I have asked no Man or woman to support he began. Launching at once into the subject of his Candida Ture for the leadership. Ever since i arrived Here i have been approached by Loyal conservatives insisting that it was my duty at least to permit my name to go before the convention and after deep thought i have decided that my Only duty is to do so and let the convention decide. Wanted most suitable Man i hesitated particularly in View of the fact that there Are Many of these men around Here tonight All of whom i Trust Are Good friends of mine who Are much older in experience than i. Let me assure you i am not appearing Here in any spirit of any Hope that this convention will put in any one in particular but fervently Pray ing that you will pick that Man who is most suitable to Lead this great party to Success at the next election to put into Force Thise truly great principles that the conservative party stands for. And May i ask you that no matter which of these men should be elected no matter How emphatically you show. Me that you do not wish me As n Lead on my part i shall truly and sincerely help whichever one of those men Are chosen As loyally As anyone in his party. I Don t conceive this As any orator ical contest with the conservative leadership As the prize. Some of the Liberal papers made one think that someone would come Here with such an oratorical outburst that you would beg him to Lead you to the promised land. I believe that you will tomorrow choose the Man who is most suitable for that office and i have every Confidence that the Best minds of the party will not make any mistakes Fis the liberals did in 1019 by putting planks into their platform that they have been burning Ever since. Responsible position the party that has been led by such men As sir John a. Macdonald Sif Charles Tupper sir Hotali to Bor Den and lot the least among the leaders or. Arthur Meighen the leadership of that party is a responsibility that any Man might hesitate to take and the leadership will task any Man to make it a Success. Had the conservative party nothing to its credit but the confederation the building of the Canadian Pacific railway and the Canadian National policy it would be thoroughly justified. It was the fathers of confederation who had the bringing together of men of All shades of politics who had the courage to Lay aside their political differences and Start that great under inc on its momentous voyage. Will that it was cart who stated that the Canadian Pacific railway would not pay for its Axle Case. Yet today it is one of the greatest business institutions in the National policy was brought into Force by sir John Macdonald and though Liberal leaders have condemned it Ever since they have never had the courage radically to change such a background that leadership will be an Honor to any Man who has Ever graced the Halls of parliament. Let me advise you Wlton re Zard to the Man you Are going to elect tomorrow choose him carefully but Havlin chose him close your ranks and follow him. Because it is True that a party unitedly b behind a Leader who is Only average is stronger than a disunited party behind a talented Leader. National platform resolutions which have been passed that we cannot make any party of faster than the great mass of the Otoole Are prepared to follow. We Are Hoing to bring in a platform 01 a National kind remembering that the Broad minded Canadian will not allow any Section to be injured by the Seo the ment of our common problems. Are Goine to put into effect our belief in the British connection. We Are Cong to give out that we believe in a suitable Tariff. We Are going to that we believe i an in Nigra policy to bring people out to Row up with cauda. And make them realize this is a land of Opportunity a land of Liberty and Freedom for All classes. Are Golan to bring in a policy to develop our resources in our country instead of shipping it out to other countries. We have shown already by our great meeting Here that we do not believe in sectional ism. All we wish to believe in is in one great nation. We wish to wipe out antagonism of East and West. We Point out that in this country we do not wish to sow. The seeds of Dis Union but to sow the seeds of Unity and if we do that we will be building tip a great nation. We Are not Here As French or eng Lish. A Oman Catholic or protestant but As canadians All believing that we Are Here to build up Canada keeping our Dominion first and our own interests after. In View of the platform i have de scribed we have shown that we Are prepared to build up a nation in which our Chilcu in can earn their bread and butter and use their talents in Canada instead of being forced to other coun tries to get the opportunities that Are denied them at Home. When we com dare Europe on the one hand and j Canada on the other the future of Canada is indeed the last Hundred years has been a Hundred years of Prosperity in the United states. The next Hundred years will be an Era of Prosperity for Canada. May i in conclusion express my great Pride at having the great privilege of being Here As a Delegate at this magnificent gathering which is the great est probably that the conservative party has Ever had. I ask you Noto vote for me but for the Man who will make the most suitable Leader and let him Lead this great conservative party on to Mew challenges continued from Page 1. Convention Hon. I. A. Taschereau prime minister of Quebec declared to Day it was inconceivable that alter his Public denial of the words attributed to him and the publication in All leading Canadian newspapers on. No vember 18, 1025, of what he had really said on the Island of Orleans or. Meighen should not hesitate to quote again calumny contained in his Hamilton speech and was not even Loyal enough to mention the fact that those words had been fully denied by or. Taschereau. A Man like or. added mi1. Taschereau. Who has so often complained of having been misquoted and misrepresented in the press should be the last one to use a report which he knows to be inaccurate in order to promote discord and distrust be tween Quebec and her sister provinces and bring us Back to misunderstand Ings of the past which we should All try to Bury and forget. There Are enough economic and social problems for political parties to look after without anyone especially a former Leader and prime minister of our country throwing seeds of Dos sention in the very year when we Ore celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of confederation and endeavouring to bring closer together our nine prov inces. I can Only concluded or. Taschereau that it is despicable to misquote a Man whatever May be the purpose one has in View and to Vise such unfair the Battle continued from Page a successful test flight with transatlantic plane special United a cos despatch to free press by or acc i Russ private u inc old o or Wurfl me. Bottle at your Dru Siiss that the conservative party is the party to save it and that the men offering for the Job of leadership will help the conservative party to save it if they get a. Chance. Just How they Are going to save it was not said. They will have to sit Down and figure that out after the excite ment is Over and the roof of the rink has been repaired. Judging by the applause the fight is Between Bennett Guthrie and Manion. There was plenty of talk about the Unity of Canada and the Unity of the conservative party. Or. Ferguson was sitting on the platform. Premier Rhodes of Nova Scotia handled the Bell. The loud speakers worked Well considering the fact that they had been jarred into insensibility in the afternoon when Joe Han is a Toronto ., came on and produced the in modest voice heard West of the great lakes since the disappearance of the Buffalo. During the Day the convention produced the main planks of the new conservative platform. It is a plat form that should not do them any harm if it is Well handled. The soft pedal has been applied to both the Tariff and immigration. No new ground has been broken. Large and plainly marked signposts have been put up to help the troops pass safely Over any spots where the ice is thin. The main idea behind the policy is to make it fool proof and grit proof. E the voice of the rank and file of the conservative convention is a com Mittee voice. If the voice does not get into the committee it in t a voice at All. Yesterday afternoon the convention was building its platform working this Way a committee of immigration tackled the immigration question another committee took Ori the matter of the Tariff another com Mittee dealt with other questions. When the committees had a. Report ready the report was presented to the convention and the delegates were asked if they accepted report of the committee or was there something Aey would like to say about it. If the Ordinary Man and woman on the convention floor wants to say j something about the platform it is necessary for them to come on the platform and Tell it to the microphone which works with the loud speakers. On one or two occasions a citizen on the convention floor Rose to say some thing and in the immensity of the big rink the voice of the average Citi zen sounds like a pea shooter Horning in at the Battle of the Somme. The speaker itself cannot hear what he is trying to say. All that is left for him to do is to crash his Way through to the platform climb up before delegates and spectators and say it to the microphone. This takes courage it takes practice. The Ordin Ary citizen knows that if he were to climb on the platform and try to Tell it to the microphone with of the rank and file in front of him and All the big guns of the conservative party behind him his hands would tremble until his notes were shaken out of them and the knocking of his Knees would Jingle Trie Money in his trousers pocket. Rather than do that the aver age citizen in the rank and file would rather stay in his seat and let the conservative platform go Hanft. Only a half dozen speakers had the courage to take the platform yester Day afternoon and speak their minds. Among those who did it were col. Harry Mullins of Winnipeg who spoke on the Tariff Resolution. Col. Mullins wanted farm implements placed on the free list. Col Harry said he knew the position of the Farmer lie said he knew the position 01 the farm implement companies from a evident experience for he owned Stock in one. Col. Mullins roused no cheers from the Ontario Section. Thomas Church For a Toronto seat came Forward to attack the Tariff Resolution. Or. Church said the Tariff Resolution had no Teeth. He wanted a real boost for Protection. The Resolution was t Protection at All. It was a weak subterfuge. It be Balm in Gilead for or. Hon. Robb. Or. Church received the most cheers when he sat Down. N the Tariff Resolution that makes the fiscal Plank in the conservative plat form will not. Do anybody any Larni. It is to the effect that it is desirable to build up Canada and Canadian industries. The customs duties should be adjusted from time to time with a View to making them work equitably on Industry and on the consumer. Then there is to be a permanent Tariff commission to make a scientific study of the Tariff to guide the government. There is already a Tariff commission at Ottawa but Hon. H. H. Stevens who made the main explanation of what the Tariff policy Means claimed that the conservatives would have a real he Man Tariff commission and not a political commission such As had been appointed and put to work by Hon. Or. W. L. Mackenzie Kins. The conservative party favors pre Ference within the British Empire but says such preferences must not be j granted at the expense of the Canadian Farmer or Workman. I the Resolution was adopted the i chairman senator Beau Len asking i the convention if it would accept it. There was a loud Roar of the chairman did not ask if anyone were opposed. Carried he said in an emphatic voice and not a trowel was heard scraping among the Brick for Brick advocates of 1923. The convention had an immigration policy before it and would have adopted it had not a difference of Opin Ion Arisen Over the last clause which was a Bare two words Oriental sex this Plain statement was challenged by sir George poster on the ground might be offensive to China Japan and India. He thought it should be worded differently. The idea is to find a More polite Way of telling. Orientals that Canada will not have them. Or. Liaiga. Of Winnipeg tried a shot at it by an Amend ment that would bar from. Canada such races a s Are not capable of ready or. Mckinnon of Regeria would not stand for this. He was afraid of what the grits would do to the tories in Saskatchewan with a phrase like that. He knew from experience what the grits could do to the tories by twisting things around. An amendment to Send the Resolution Back to the committee for redrafting of the Oriental exclusion clause car ried by a standing vote. British Columbia was solidly for having it the Way it was at first. The main Resolution on immigration has fur frills. It Calls for More immigration especially More British immigration. It is suggested that some thing might be done to help canadians to Settle on the vacant lands of the country Federal scheme of old age pensions for other policies adopted provide for a Alberta and the Mari times to be sold a National subsidy to enable Coal from in Central Canada and a recommendation that the Industrial relations and social legislation of the party be that contained in the labor convention of the peace treaty of 1019. The latter was presented by senator Gideon Robertson former minister of labor .o made reference to some men at Ottawa who had crawled behind the barn in. 1914, and stayed there until he crawled Back through a Hole ill the Fence after the no names were mentioned. The re Mark failed to draw a cheer. Up to 3 o clock yesterday the convention was still Busy looking behind. It was still talking sir John a. Mac Doinald and the historic traditions. The convention spent the first Day and a half talking about past great Nesses. Sir Thomas White former minister of finance was the main speaker in the morning and could not get away from looking backward. He was concerned with the things that had been inter Esting enough but leaving the future too much behind. About the first suggestion of a for Ward look came from a Young Mani Toban Eric Willis who told the convention that there was no sense in beating the air about a High Tariff or a Low Tariff because it was Plain that the Best that could be hoped for was a moderate Tariff. Or. Willis also said that the National policy was no Good unless it were brought up to Date. Young men appeared to speak from the Macdonald Cartier clubs which exist in Toronto Montreal Hull Winnipeg and other Eastern and Western cities. These clubs Are working to in Terest Young men in conservatism. They Are not to be confused with Meighen Ferguson clubs. Approves betrothal Bonn Germany oct. 11.
