Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - October 2, 1928, Winnipeg, Manitoba Pioneer Churchman has Given Long service to Edu cation in Manitoba Early Day school administration in Western Canada c prov a. S contains of the the Resitana to archbishop of this Board of Mernor since rhe Quarter of a Century. As chairman of the Board for nearly Twenty live years he i has brought to Bear on its. Proceed Ings a Strong interest in education in its entire Range and a keen understand ing of How to secure the most efficient form of education under local Condi prior to 1890 his Grace was a member of the protestant Section or the Board of education i do not know whether i was a member of the e first protestant Board instituted upon the creation of the province but 1 certainly belonged remarked his Grace in an interview with a free press representative. In those Days there were the i two boards one for the roman Cath Olio schools Axl the other for the i protestant. We held it joint meeting j once a year chiefly to go Over estimates and that sort of thing. 1 do re i member though that one matter of discussion was the institution of a Normal school which would serve All our schools. He could not remember the time when he had not Ben so interested. It was a family failing. His Grandfather John prot Chard. Instituted the first school in nil the great West opening it not Long after the disaster of seven Oaks. This was before churches had begun their for Public education. Not j you must not think commented his Grace that when the province. Among its very first acts made pro vision for Public education that this wis of school less land. Par from it. There was a widespread system of Parish schools carried on under the Aegis of the anglican and the presbyterian churches. Indeed in those Days the connection Between the school and the Church was very it was from these schools that the archbishop himself received his Early education at his Grandfather s schoo ail at the anglican Parish school at Mledd Church. And the presbyterian school at Kildonan. At the age of fifteen he was teaching himself. I these schools were supported by i the churches but they were free to he said and excellent schools they were. To name the names of Ali eur teachers and of their scholars would be to Call the Roll of names Many of which have been and Are High in Public service and when the protestant Board was formed the churches handed Over their schools to us administration both archbishop Machray and Rev or. Black were keenly interested in state stated the Arch Bishop. They had no desire to put the slightest obstacle in the Way of the functioning of the new regime. This was no doubt partly due to the fact that the growth of the Parish schools which followed faithfully the line of settlement was proving a heavy Drain on the time and resources of the churches and partly because it was Felt that the churches had been carrying on the state s his Grace explained that thes schools were Strung along All the Way to Portage la Prairie. Many Long rides for some years he said i Ivas examiner for the Job Lster Trust award ing the prizes to the schools. In Pur suit of this duty i used to ride my Saddle horse All the Way to Portage conducting the examinations at the various Points As i went along. At that time 1 was on the staff of St. John s College and the College was entrusted with the awards. I some times look Back on those Days and am thankful once again for the work of these schools. The new Manitoba found itself not Only in Possession of a system of schools it found itself with a population who were confirmed in belief in education. The Isbister prize winners of whom i spoke in Many cases on to the University and have amply rep Niti the of Pottin cities extended to them. Some of them went to the Eastern universities some to Oxford and Cambridge and it is i something to say that there they were cordially received not Only because they came from the far stretches or the Plains but because they brought with them a love for and a foundation in scholarship. During the first Days of the Board our concern was As Nuich with out Side Winnipeg As within. Indeed More. Since there were More schools i outside. This division of interest still obtains on the advisory Board. I have never had Opportunity to study the course of development but speaking through impression. I would Sny that it had been a process of yielding to import unities for additions to the curriculum. Personally i have not Al ways been convinced of the Wisdom of this lengthening of the list of requirements. It has meant a dissipation of Effort. Of course considering that i cannot drive a Nail without danger of smashing my thumb i am perhaps not a Good judge of manual training for instance As a part of the curriculum of the Public school. I do see that it is commendable to teach carpentry if there is time but my experience has not convinced me there is time for All these extras. Indeed i am sure that in the old Days of fewer subjects taught with their demand for exact knowledge that the schools produced students who carried away with them a deeper love for scholarship. I say this while acknowledging that our schools today Are doing Fine work in some cases very Fine. One thing Manitoba has retained. It was the spirit of the Board when i began and it has continued unc Lim finished. That is the respect for Educa Tion and the wide spread resolve that the Means of education should be provided. Manitoba has never wavered in that belief. It still sits enthroned at the advisory Board and it receives fresh impetus from every delegation and other sort of Impact from the Public which the Board serves. Fewer subjects if i were offering any advice to Manitoba s educational authorities for the schools which i have loved. T would be first the recapturing of the characteristic of toughness which marked those old Parish schools. Exactness of knowledge and learning for the Sake of learning. That would mean few subjects but i am con Vinced it would mean More truly educated boys and girls. Secondly i would like to see in our schools make use of All the Powers granted in the act for religious instruction. The implementing of that clause depends now upon the Good will or the trustees but that consent would easily be obtained on the de Mand of the Public i do not advocate for an instant the segregation of the cart Loren of this denomination Here and that one there. But i think the protestant churches should come together with a definite pronounce ment in this matter. The Lack of knowledge of the Bible even among otherwise quite literate persons in this Day is astonishing. There arc certain great passages which should be the property of All and even on the basis of the glory of the language should be part of tie equipment of All our Chil Dren. True the path bristles with difficulties but that is no reason Why the laying out of the course should not be attacked with the determination to succeed. As it is now in our schools we Are depriving the children of part of their heritage a part which was not denied them under the old system. This endowment i desire for Manitoba s a holds mrs.
