Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 9, 1934, Winnipeg, Manitoba Marshall Smith free press monday july 9, 1934 Surprise Tennis beats Gordon Pirt in first round of provincial tourney former Junior Star plays Beautiful game in Downing Veteran Hanking Simpson Downs Otto Mckrush in hard fought games expected today. Young Marshall Smith sprang one of the biggest upsets in the history of local tournament Tennis on Satur Day afternoon on the courts of the Winnipeg club when he eliminated the ranking Gordon Pirt in the first round of the provincial Tennis championships. The Junior City finalist stroked his Way to a 5-7, 3-6. 8-7 Victory Over his Veteran Rix Al in scoring his Victory. Smith played Beautiful Tennis. It looked As if Pirt was going to take his Young opponent into Camp when he Cap tured the first game but Smith came Hack gamely to even matters with an 3-6 Victory in the second while he went on to win the match by taking the deciding set 8-7. Otto Mckrush. Of the Canoe club j found Simpson very much on his game. Who. Despite four match Points against him in the third set. Finally pulled away to win at 6-2, 5-7. 7-5. After a hectic three set struggle i Mac Taylor Defeated Jack Stevenson. Stevenson did not appear to be concentrating in this match and Taylor was not slow to take advantage of this fact. Emsley Long showed a greatly improved game in taking Art Devlin to three sets before admitting defeat. The steadier play of the ultimate Winner was the deciding Factor in this match. Despite Many three set matches All other games ran True to form the Junior events showing a greatly improved Quality of Tennis and Many interesting matches were the order of the Day. Today s draw will Complete first i round matches in singles and a Start will be made in the ladies and men s doubles. The 5.30 draw today will bring to Gether Graham Bannatyne and Kavanaugh. Both players playing in the top of their form and a keen contest is anticipated. At 4.30 Marshall Smith will play a second round singles match against Bert Fri Sci of the Canoe club.
