If the Hospital was forced to close it would mean that the City would have to take it Over and mayor Queen did not think this fair because it had almost become a provincial institution. He urged that pressure be brought to Bear on the provincial government to get it to increase its subsidy. The government Grant of 40 cents per bed per Day for Public Ward patients might be enough for Small hospitals but it was inadequate for a Hospital As Large As the general the mayor contended. Aid. M. A. Gray said it Cost the Hospital per Day for Public Ward patients and the City made a Grant to the Hospital of si.50 per Day. In View of the amount of work the Hospital did for non residents of the City he contended that the provincial Grant was much too Low. On Aid. Gray s motion the com Mittee appointed mayor Queen Aid. In fact it bears every Promise of being the biggest Politi Cal show in Canadian history big Ger even than the gathering of the clan in Winnipeg 11 years ago. And i m going to be there to see it and hear it and feel it and write about it. I la be there not As a scribe from the opposite Camp who goes to jibe and jest nor As a Pharisee who goes to groan and gloat so much to write nor is my Job the news but rather the news behind the to try to Tell. What goes on Back stage As Well As in front of the foot lights to look for the color to Cap Ture the human interest to describe and also to discuss to relate with out dilating to embellish without distorting. Pretty tall order that but Well take a fling at it and it s a swell assignment. Anyway. That by the Way. Is used literally not editorially. My desk mate and corridor mate at the convention will be Chester Bloom free press staff correspondent in Ottawa whose preliminary articles on leadership and platform possibilities you have been Reading in these columns for the past few Days. With his Many years of parliamentary and political reporting experience Bloom will be right in his element. His Job is to write the spot news leads. And they la be straight news too. No. Political Bias on this assignment. You la have to turn to the editorial Page for the subjective writing. In addition to the copy that Bloom and i will be filing extensive use will be made of Canadian press re ports. They la have a big Battery of experts on the Job and will be carrying thousands of words into Winnipeg on both Day and night shifts. So All in All it looks As though you re going to get your fill of political writing during the next few Days.
