By Lichty some notes from Dublin nothing negative about Irish features this is one of a series of articles written in Europe by Francis h. Stevens free press legislative re Porter now on leave of absence by Francis h. Stevens Dublin Ireland. Walk Down o Connell Street any Day of the year and what impresses you the most the fact that the Irish not Only have faces but they have features As Well. In some lands they just have faces but in Ireland it s features and How features and character. There s nothing negative about any Irish Man. Good or bad handsome or ugly he has decided features and lots of individual character. On the Pond of St. Stephen s Green in the heart of Dublin Are the world s most disgusting Birds sea gulls pretending to be ducks. There Are ducks on the Pond As Well. The gulls have the Edge on them since they can soar above the Pond when they Rouse themselves sufficiently and pounce Down upon morsels tossed into the Pond by the children. The gulls big overfed Birds apparently came in from Dublin Bay discovered this easy living and decided to stay. Names you notice twice Irish inns along any bus route into the Green country from Dublin often have names you notice twice. On the Road to Newcastle a Vil Lage of thatched roofed houses in meath where there Are the ruins of a very old Tastle you pass by the red cow inn. Next door is the red cow garage. One rather irrationally looked around for the red cow. She is no where to be seen. But a mile further along the Road a rather self conscious looking Black and White cow May be found eying the inquisitive bus passenger. On the same Road May be found the Black horse Bridge inn. There actually is a Bridge and when we rolled past a Donkey cart was crossing the Bridge. Speaking of Birds in St. Stephen s Green they have the most Beautiful pigeons there which the children feed. Maybe they should be called doves for their feathers Are of a Lovely iridescent Sheen. I would t think of mentioning these pigeons were it not for the fact that when i saw them there was one tiny Little Bird hopping around among them and really looking very funny. Moses o Neill across the Street from the Abbey theatre which in t actually on Abbey Street but a Block away is an institution which honest to goodness is called the Moses o Neill school of golfing. I looked twice. If you want to find the sort of houses and buildings you see in old prints and etchings of 18th Century England come to Dublin. They Are All Here grand old Brick houses of the georgian age with huge Chim Neys and lots of Chimney pots. Look at these houses and you decide for sound architecture for honesty and Home worthiness they beat anything we Are building to Day. The Chimney pots dominate the Skyline of Dublin. The City structurally has just As much character As the people and that Means the very Best. On a Day of gentle rain and Mist and there Are Many of them Dublin becomes Beautiful. Then for some reason More than on a sunny Day you notice How much color there is in the scene. It pays to respect the Irish weather. I did t and got very warm climbing a Mountain and these very Cool sitting on its Summit without proper Protection. As a result i am lugging around a bad cold in the Chest and heavy limbs. Hope i won t carry this Load All around Ireland. Today i went out with Trench coat and a Scarf that i use in Winter in Winnipeg. They come in Handy at Odd moments. Dublin May be next the sea. But in Canada you have to go up to Banff to get the likes of it in mixtures of warmth in Sun Light and chill in Shade. The Irish know All about horses and their Horsey talk is grand to hear. One sees quaint old men going around with splendid racing hounds for company. A courteous gentleman i walked across a Green Field on the outskirts of Dublin and found a very distinguished looking old Man in ragged clothes reclined on the grass Reading a Book. He was stretched out in the sees in Oriental Poten tates in picture books. He addressed courteously in Beautiful English and said it was a Fine evening. Instinctively i addressed him As sir. One is addressed in almost courtly places. One crosses a Bridge Over the Liffey River in a poor neighbor Hood. A group of Young Fellows Are lounging on the Bridge. One assume they Are what we Call rough necks. Yet one of them Speaks to you smiles and says in the very Best of English speech it is a Fine you agree and pass on knowing that he expects no More than a courteous greeting. He is probably from the country. There Are Many from the country in Dublin and they Are like that in the Village he comes from. This talk of being descended from Irish Kings is no Idle boast. It is a simple statement of fact. The descendants Are a credit to their regal ancestors. Dies aged Dundas out., july 11 Courtesy unexpected d.
