Golden Hopes encouraging developments underway in mining area Page five. Winnipeg free press Friday july 15, 1938 time a milling constructed. At one time top left shows a portion of the Plant at Sachiyo River exploration company s property at Sachiyo River comprising the head Frame picking Belt conveyor Belt and Mill. Lower left Are offices and bunk houses at the same Camp. Upper right is a portion of the mining Plant at uchi Lake Gold mines limited now to be replaced by an extensive Plant capable of sinking a four compartment Shaft to feet while lower right shows a prospector s tent at the Mouth of god s River least end of god s Lake. This is the second of three articles by Frank h. Avery financial editor of the free press briefly descriptive of a Small Section of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario s mining areas. I by f. H. Avery. I uchi Lake Gold mines limited will be one of the largest producing Gold mines in the Patricia District according to plans recently announced by j. E. Hammell. Work is to commence immediately upon a new four compartment Shaft and the first unit of the Mill will be of 500 tons capacity. The sinking Plant will be capable of going Down to feet in depth. The hoisting plan will be Able to handle tons Dally and crushing capacity wit be tons a Day. These plans were announced by or. Harnell very shortly follow ing a visit made to the property by h. J. Jowsey h. H. Drummond Hay and the writer and Are in line with the developments thai have been made during the past few months. Or. Hammell has just concluded a visit himself to his Patricia District interests and expressed himself As Well satisfied with Progress made. Uchi was originally staked in the fall of 1926, when prospectors were beginning to Range further afield from bed Lake. Although comparatively a Short distance from red Lake the character of the country shows much change. In general it has fewer elevations is swampy and of desolate appear Ance. A Power line has been Cut for a of 40 Miles and Power available by the Plant has been the consolidated mining and smelting company held an option on the property and Sank a two compartment Shaft to a depth of 110 feet work was later suspended because of the High Cost of transportation and be cause no Power had been developed. Work was re commenced late in the fall of 1936. The Shaft has been carried Down to 600 feet with Levels established at intervals of 150 feet in addition to Drifting in All Levels a very considerable amount of Diamond drilling has been done and tonnage is being rapidly developed by r. H. Sturges mine manager which indicates an important mining operation. The mine is about 13 Miles East of the j. M. Consolidated to which a Power line has also been cleared. Power for the property will be taken from ear Falls under the control of the Ontario Hydro electric commission. In that first Winter More than claims were staked most of them of course purely on location and All hoping they might by Good Fortune have stumbled on something Rich. Many of course were later abandoned but out of the Rush which was one of the most spectacular since the Klondike Days were established a number of successful Gold producers. Today years later prospectors Are now going Over Many of the abandoned properties and finding new ones. It will probably continue so for years to come. Opposite extremes have been met with in the area. Howey Gold mine the original find turned into one of Canada s big producers and despite the fact that every Pound of freight had to be taken in Over 140 Miles it also achieved the distinction of be coming the lowest Cost producing mine in Canada. Howey As a Gold mine is approaching extinction. Its Ore is within measurable distance of being mined out and no new Ore has been developed to take its place. Modern town during its the town of porous Community on the shores of the Lake which gave the town its name has been built up Complete with All modern conveniences in ties of other holding of the com Pany in the neighbourhood of the mine. In addition to the Isa Chigo River exploration company there Are several other companies carrying on prospecting work in the general area and from the air the Camps of some of these were plainly visible. While some encouragement has been received in places not Focient has yet been accomplished to warrant anything in the nature of the development at Sachiyo River. Years of operation red Lake a pros clouding up to Date schools and houses. Hotels stores it was. Largely Safeway stores Olimire responsible for the establishment of a sizable town at Hudson just a few Miles East of Sioux Lookout on the Canadian National railway and which became the Centre of Commerce for the entire area. Red Lake inhabitants feel optimistic As to the future. There Are several other mines in the District served by the town. These properties Are increasing size of milling operations and several new does Are Likely soon to come into production and the town is Well located to serve As a Centre for any mines Over a wide area including the 300 ton Madsen eed Lake property due to g9 into production sometime this fall. Northward from red Lake the plane roared into the Early morning sunlight and we were on the Wing with Sachiyo River 200 Miles Dis Tant As our destination. In a Cloud less sky with vision fading into misty horizons Miles on Miles in every direction the Vista of lakes swamps Timberland and Rocky ridges continued uninterruptedly. Just once or twice was visible on the Shore of a Lake the White tent which denoted a Small party of prospectors painstakingly following Shore lines for indications of Ore later to be followed Inland. And once we passed High overhead and some Miles away but plainly discernible the. Berens River Gold property on the shores of favourable Lake. Head Frame and Camp build Ings stood out clearly. The mine property is 200 Miles Northeast of Winnipeg and All its mine equip ment boilers hoists building material was taken in by plane. The property has been Well explored and sufficient underground work done to warrant the establishment of a Mill. All machinery and supplies it is expected will be taken up Lake Winnipeg by open water to the Mouth of the Berens River and from there will be freighted in by tractor Over the Winter roads which will be constructed following freeze up. Sachiyo River in what seemed Only a very Short space of tune the Clearing surround ing Sachiyo River exploration com Pany s mine loomed up and As we swooped and circled it the Plant and buildings stood out in Sharp re Lief. Though the mine is situated almost on the Edge of Foster Lake the area of the Lake is too restricted for use As a Landing for Pontoon equipped planes and Landing is made about a mile Distant on Sher Man Lake with a Portage on which. Rails have been Laid and a Flat car propelled by Man Power thence by Canoe across Foster Lake to the mine Landing. The mine at Sachiyo River is one of the most interesting in Canada. It is now in production and is one of the richest in Point of ounces of Gold per ton in the Dominion. Its development is indicative of the hazards which beset the mining Enterprise in its infancy. The Sachiyo River area is Low and swampy. Rock exposures Are few and though some indications were found fur ther development work did not Dis close anything which seemed to be worthwhile. However the company decided to hold the property Pend ing a further examination and As the Best Way of doing assessment work decided to do some Diamond drilling. The Drill cores told the Story of below the surface wealth and a comparatively Small amount was sufficient to determine the company to push right ahead with development work a Hundred Miles East and North of god s Lake All freight had to be taken in from the Lauhead at Ilford and via the god s Lake Road some where in the neighbourhood of 230 Miles. Kich Ore shoot at the time of our visit work was in Progress on the third level and the Rich Ore shoot was plainly discernible. About 18 inches in. Width it had averaged for 120 feet be tween two and three ounces of Gold to the ton and gave every Indica Tion of continuing. This vein if carried through to the surface would come out under about 52 feet of swamp illustrating the difficulty of making any surface discovery. Plant buildings and equipment Are All modern and under the direction of b. G. Edward mine manager Are working smoothly. About 40 tones of Ore is hoisted daily from underground and from 25 to 30 tons is run through the Mill the balance being eliminated on a picking Belt the nature of the Ore making this a simple and inexpensive method of handling the Ore. Mill Heads have been As High As five ounces Gold to the ton but the average is Between two and three ounces. Capitalization of the company is one of the smallest in Canada for a Gold property being shares of which about Are outstanding. The Plant is operated by diesel motors fuel Oil for which is All hauled during the Winter months and stored in huge containers on a Small Island some distance from the Plant to eliminate any possible j danger from fire. About 45 men comprise the regu Lar Crew with some additions in the Winter tune when Wood must be Cut and hauled and general freight i ing done. Some prospectors Are j also kept investigating the pos Sibili change in Eden feelings seen London july 14.
