Of j it _ yom digest of Golf clubs Unpeng s by Lillian Coo Rpu Edo the As the youngest is often the favored i Tuxedo Golf club has become a favorite with a great number of Winnipeg golfers. Modern in every detail this Fine course has gained in popular acclaim and now in its fourth season is recognized As one of Winnipeg s finest courses Tuxedo Golf club adjoins Assini Boine Park and is in the heart of the residential District of town of Tuxedo. Its site contains some 135 acres and was originally donated to the University of Manitoba. When the contract to build the University on this prop erty was not fulfilled the property reverted to the original owners who constructed this Lovely 18-Hole Golf course. Signs still remain of he hoped for University. Large Gates can be seen which would Lave opened into new Halls of earning. In place of studious students ardent golfers now tread he fairways. The course which is beautifully wooded has Many sporty holes. Tuxedo is not one of those very Tricky courses but is just nicely difficult. The club House is an attractive English cottage Type. Wooden panelled Walls and a beamed Ceil ing give a charming effect. To feminine golfers have been Active in Tuxedo from the Day of its formal opening May 1934. When a foursome of Manitoba champions were invited to play. This foursome was made up of mrs. R. K. Beairsto mrs. Douglas Laird. Mrs. B. P. Pellenz and mrs. John Rogers. Other women invited that Day were mrs. Gordon Kofi Antz mrs. A c. Balfour. Mrs. E. E. Hender son and mrs. D. R. Finkelstein. These with a Small group of friends formed a women s Section later in july and affiliated with the Canadian ladies Golf Union. The course was parred by mrs. Beairsto. Mrs. Konantz mrs. Laird and mrs. Finkelstein and was set at 72. Tuxedo is therefore one of the courses which although a Public course has affiliation with the . Mrs. D. R. Finkelstein was elected president in 1934 and has remained in office Ever since. The original slate of officers included mrs. Gordon Konantz vice presi Dent mrs. J. W. Alves Secretary treasurer and mrs. Douglas Laird sports Captain. Many Well known golfers have held offices or been members at Tuxedo. Mrs. J. W. Alves has been honorary president of the club for two years and prior to that was Secretary treasurer. She has taken an Active part in . Affairs and was Secretary treasurer of the Manitoba Branch for nine years. Mrs. J. G. Cory president of the Manitoba Branch in 1934, was and is one of Tuxedo s keenest players. Mrs. Stuart m. Campbell the present Holder of the Tuxedo women s trophy is also proud pos Sessor of the Manitoba senior ladies trophy and was once Winner of the Tribune trophy. Other club Cham pions include such outstanding local players As mrs. R. K. Beairsto who was the first Holder of the cup in 1934 mrs. Newton Wallis in 1935, and mrs. B. P. Pellenz in 1936. Thursday morning during the golfing season the Mem Bers hold a tournament. Some times a Handicap event some times not. Mrs. Watson Swail has i won the Handicap trophy for two i years 1936 and 1937. But this season i is not defending her title and a new i name will be inscribed on the hand i some tray. I Trie executive has always had the full support of the club and this season again finds the same friendliness and spirit of co operation with the officers. Mrs. Finkelstein mrs. Alves and mrs. N. R. Wilson Are president honorary president and vice president respectively. Mrs. F. Trafford Taylor has the financial and secretarial duties to look after while mrs. S. M. Or. And mrs.
