Of Gold exports other than monetary in recent months is understood to be the result at a new policy of exchanging refined Gold shipped to the mint for monetary Gold Coin held by the Bank of Canada. This monetary Gold Coin is then shipped where european hoarders Are prepared to pay a Premium for it figures for monetary Gold ship ments Are not published and finance department officials do not give de tails of these operations. It is understood this new form of Gold Export has become profitable be cause of Market conditions abroad. No Gold Bullion was exported in june 1938, As compared with exports to United states of in june 1937. Nor were there any Bullion exports in May although some Worth went to United states in May 1937. For some years the Federal government has exercised control Over All Gold exports. Canadian mines ship to the mint Here and Are paid on the basis of the Exchange rates on new York. The Gold until recently was exported either to new York or Lon mostly to the former Market. The Bank of Canada credited with the proceeds. Lately the practice has been to Exchange the Gold Bullion for Gold Coin held in Bank of Canada re serves on the basis of its weight in Fine ounces and the Coin then ship Ped to London or Paris and paid Lor there in United states Exchange. How much Gold Coin has been used for this purpose has not been divulged but it is understood the Bank of Canada when first launched in March 1935 had yearly in Coin in the reserves taken Over from the Dominion Treasury. Since the change from Bullion to Coin made no change in the value of the Bank s holdings the Reserve level shown in the Bank statements remains unaltered.
