A smashing Bobby Manitoba Rifle association prize meeting last week looked to be an almost All male affair but two ladies saved the Day and kept the Flag flying for the feminine shooters. Mrs. Sang Ster was the real Standard bearer. After finishing fourth in the grand aggregate it looked like she would also be Well up in the Ottawa aggregate and gain a place on the Manitoba team. But the last Day of shooting proved a bit too much for her and she failed to make a decent score for the 900-Yard shots and thereby lost her Chance to shoot Down East. It would have been a unique thing if mrs. Sangster had made the team but we must not forget that she also did a marvellous thing when she placed so High up in the grand aggregate. She was shooting against the Cream of Manitoba s Rifle lists and showed them a woman must not be considered inferior. Next year we will All be pulling for you again mrs. This was mrs. Whellams first experience in a match of this sort and she certainly acquitted herself Well. She was mentioned in the Green shot aggregate and Al though she did not do As Well As mrs. Sangster was shooting remarkably for one with so Little experience. These two ladies should give other feminine shots the impetus to go out and try to do the same. The Small bore association has a number of girls who look As if they could be real crack Rifle shots. Both sides vulnerable. 4qj9s 0862 the . Track meet on saturday showed pretty Well who should be where in the finals of the Junior and intermediate divisions in the Manitoba championships. The intermediate sprint class was invaded by a newcomer in the person of Norma Wilson who ran away with the 100-Yard race. This was Norma s first competitive race at that distance and also her first race in spikes. She used running shoes and just bought a pair of spikes. Norma is not altogether a new face in sprint circles. She was one of Daniel Mac s sprinters at the inter High meet. Babe Demcoe was her closest rival but i Don t know whether babe is intermediate or senior. If intermediate she will undoubtedly give Norma a Battle for the title for she will be defending the Crown she won last year. Eleanor Sullivan took the Shorter race for intermediates and seniors. Norma Wilson was second. In both these races the timing was very Good but there was a wind blowing in the runners favor so they were not outstanding times. Violet Montgomery did not compete on saturday therefore these girls cannot be compared with Manitoba s and . S fastest senior. The weight girls did not have a Chance to show their skill against Cham Pion bean Higgins. They were All just beginners at the events and therefore made no exceptional throws. Elaine Fasken and babe dem Coe both had trouble with the wind and Only reached 4 it 8% ins. They should do better at the championships. Mary s time at scottish against a wind was time saturday with a win was 9.6. They look pretty evenly matched. Beans Higgins is mighty proud of her protege in the discus throw. Little Terry Frey has just started taking lessons from Beans and already is showing signs of becoming a Champion. Her coach Beans claims Terry is the Best natural thrower she has seen Here. Terry in t a big girl but seems to have a natural ability and has got the twirl to the discus which generally takes Ages to learn. Terry beat the seniors by six inches but Hast thrown it As far As Eleanor Sullivan did last year. Sully threw it 65ft. 4in., so Terry still has two feet to go. 4kt North let out a yelp of dismay when South promptly passed to the four no Trump bid but actually he had no ground for complaint even if the partnership had been using the four five no Trump convention which it was the four no Trump bid in this particular sequence would not have been conventional or forcing. Only one suit had been mentioned and not rebid and the four no Trump bid came As a direct raise to a two no Trump response. South had already bid the limit of his hand and would have had to stretch decidedly to make another response. While on this subject i had bet Ter Point out that there Are three specific exceptions in which a four no Trump bid is not conventional or forcing. They Are 1. When Only one suit has been bid not supported and not rebid and the four no Truia comes directly after a two no Trump response. 2. When no suit has been bid and the four no Trump is necessarily merely a raise of previous no Trump bidding. 3. When the previous bidding of the four no Trump bidder has been such As to establish that he could not hold the requirements for a four no Trump bid. To revert to this particular hand in which As i have said the partnership was not even using the convention North with .5 Honor trick and a six card suit and the knowl Edge that his partner had at Leas 2% not have hesitated to jump All the Way to six no Trump it was ridiculous to ask South to rebid. His two no Trump a few Odds and ends from the track Beans Higgins has just be come an Uncle she says her brother just became papa to a baby boy this ruins Beans Cycle of brother one sister one Niece and one Nephew but Beans does t care in fact she s mighty proud. Rumours Are that Evelyn Goshawk has retired from track and Field and will not compete in the championships she is supposed to be spending her spare time out at the Canoe club Here s hoping this is not altogether True for Manitoba will be losing one of its Best track and Field stars. Right now it looks like they will be c.u.a.c., St Boniface Ramblers and Norwood but who knows it might not be. Norwood collegiate have been making plans for a trip to the states. They will not be going for some time and May not go at All if they get in the finals. They look almost sure for at least a fourth spot tuesday they played Ramblers thursday they play St. Boniface and Friday Montcalm. Those games should have a definite effect on their standing and the other teams too. Friday Ramblers and St Boniface clash at Osborne stadium. It is an important game and will be a keenly con tested one. Hand.
