Elizabeth Thompson then parents oppose a Young by Man s courtship of their daughter because his income Small she can give them credit or wanting her to be Happy but can also feel free to use her in judgment. A girl used to com Ort might regret marrying a Man rho could never give her More than Bare living but if he had ability e might eventually provide a very Ood Home. One Young woman . Thompson i am a girl 22 and for the past years have been going with a of. We Are very fond of each ther but at the first indication that we cared for each other my parents objected to my going out with him. One evening not Long ago we came m together after a show and. My Ather ordered him to leave and Ever come Back in a very rude manner. This Hurt me terribly. Iso him As we want to go together. My father s reason for treating pm like this was that i was not ild enough to be serious also that in would not make me Happy As he Vas not making enough Money to give me everything i wanted. I m not afraid of being poor but i m afraid of losing him. I am earning my own living and would like to know if i should eave Home which i know would create a lot of gossip in. A Small City. However i am most unhappy or my lonesome at present Sally. Don t leave Home just yet. Unless your parents Are ambitious for. You and want you o marry a Rich Man it seems unlikely they would oppose a poor Man if he had any prospects of Ever getting on his feet. People old enough to be the parents of a girl 22 should know that plenty of boys Start out in a. Small Way and go places. They should also know that it is no reflection on a Young Man these Days if his Progress is slow. However people their age will also Lave observed that some Young men Lack what it takes to succeed. If they think that this boy. Is without the ability brains or training to make a decent living they Are doing you a kindness by discouraging the match. There is no doubt that Lack of Money is a serious Handicap to marriage especially if the girl has been used to a lot and has to re Duce her. Standard. Of. Living. You say you Ari not afraid of being poor but do you know what you Are talking about have you any idea what it would be like to live on your sweetheart s salary you Don t know but your parents do that Many couples have started out with love and Little else coming to hate each other because their nerves could t stand the Strain of trying to make ends meet. On the other hand it never Hurt any girl to Start out in a Small Way and learn to stretch dollars. Love in an attic can be a great adventure provided it does t stay in the attic too Long. Your parents want you to be comfortable and Start out with everything but that in t necessary for happiness. Before making up your mind about this Man find out How much he earns and what his prospects Are. Then do some arithmetic and., Esti mate what it would take to run a modest Little Home if you think it could be done on the boy s salary without undue Strain stick to your guns and Don t let anybody Separ ate you. Tell your parents that while you appreciate their motives and realize they mean Well you think that at 22 your judgment is Worth something and you believe the boy would make a Good Hus band. Assure them that you Don t intend to do anything rash and have no idea of getting married soon. Act say you would like them to be polite to your Friend even if they can t be enthusiastic. If they refuse to unbind and you Are con Vinced that they Are unjust Tell them you Are sorry and you will leave Home. It is altogether Likely Tat when they see you Are in earn St they will change their tune but Ven at risk of causing. Gossip tand by your convictions if they tand the test investigation.
