There seemed just a Bare possibility that France it insistently pressed by Chamberlain to go to extreme limits to avoid the catastrophe of a general War might indicate to the czechs that they would have to yield. The situation today looked Darker than at any time since Hitler made his speech at Nuremberg monday. Certainly the atmosphere is More ominous than at any time during the present crisis. Foreign newspapermen have suitcases packed ready to jump to the czechoslovak Frontier. Embassy staffs remain on duty late and return Early. On the. Roads one can see sudeten who have fled from Czechoslovakia with their cars loaded with pos sessions. Spic and Span units of the army March along the great new Highway to the Border. Tank trucks in convoys carry air plane gasoline. There were at least 100 army air planes on the line at the military Ai drome outside Munich yesterday. One of the most momentous meetings in history is pictured Here As Adolf Hitler Reich dictator and. Prime minister Neville Chamberlain of England met at Hitler s Villa at Berchtesgaden to discuss ways and Means of averting another european War. At left is German foreign minister Joachim von Ribb ii trop backs to camera two interpreters. Chamberlain May have another meeting with the German fuehrer. Slovakia to continue its Alliance with Lussia an Alliance which Hitler hates. Kundt criticized the government for Banning the sudeten party and said i Don t intend to give up my parliamentary mandate on the decision of the government they will have o use Force to prevent me from fulfilling my duties As a perhaps the most direct Public denunciation of Dis membership was made by Rudolph Bethnye Deputy Premier in a newspaper article. Would solve nothing. A plebiscite would solve nothing. At least germans would Ilee from the plebiscite area to the Interior thus creating a new Ger Man minority which would be used As a pretext for a new sudeten ques Tion until the Republic was destroyed. In this country there will be no plebiscite and no International this idea that not All sudeten were pro nazi is not a new one. The sudeten party won 44 seats in the 1935 election the last. The communists of whom Many Are won 30. The left Wing Erman social democratic party anti nazi won 11. Other German parties though they have co oper ated with the sudeten in seeking concessions Are not necessarily for Union with Germany. The government reported that the sudeten country was almost completely quiet this morning. Many people surrendered their arms to the authorities it was asserted after a government ban on weapons and a number of sudeten leaders left for Germany. It was said that a travelling musician was killed by a gendarme patrol near sch Lashof because he refused on command. He was suspected it was added of acting As a sudeten courier. Foreign minister Krofta discuss ing the possibility of a regional pact said that it might involve non aggression and Mutual assist Ance clauses among German Czecho Slovakia Poland Russia and per haps the Baltic states with France As a guarantor. He used the same argument As did vice Premier if Germany got the sudeten area German social democrats communists jews and others would slip into the remaining part of Czecho Slovakia and form yet another racial Island of germans. Sudeten Leader Kundt in his interview said since the chamber lain Hitler talk it is no longer a question of whether parties exist in Czechoslovakia. It is a question of peace or War. Neither germans nor czechs can decide their Fate. The second Chamberlain Hitler talk alone will be he protested the government s dissolution of the sudeten party As illegal and said the government would have to use Force to make him give up his seat. Then he took occasion to deny that he was trying to form a party to be called the German Bohemian country party. I have not formed any new party and i am not even thinking about he said. What i am thinking about is the Fate of germans living in czech territory partly minorities partly linguistic islands powder Keg explosion Likely any moment German politicians declare Berlin sept. 17. Britain must not Only accept Adolf Hitler s terms in the czechoslovak minority crisis but must accept them soon it was reported today in political quarters. Well informed sources said that the Centre of Gravity diplomatically had shifted to London and that Hitler planned no move before he heard from prime minister Neville Chamberlain but the situation in Czechoslovakia itself was such in German eyes that there might be an explosion at any moment. The German official news Agency asserted that sudeten. Ger mans in All had fled the terror in Czechoslovakia and the number was increasing rapidly. Refugee Camps were being established in Germany and in Austria. It was reported that almost the entire leadership of the sudeten German party after fleeing Czecho Slovakia to avoid arrest had re turned under cover to keep sude tens organized. Calculated to enrage reports blazoned in newspapers were calculated to enrage All Ger mans regardless of political affiliation. A German news Agency despatch from chemists for instance reported that a sudeten German woman and her five children were shot dead by czech Frontier guards after ignoring an order not to try to leave the martial Lav area. There were reports that sudeten German army reservists were stance 10 sudeten were killed to rounded up at the pistol Point and Day or forced to respond to Call for Czecho slovak army duty that relatives of reservists who escaped to Germany were shot by firing squads that gendarmes searched the. Sudeten Countryside for hiding sudeten reservists and fired shots into barns and haystacks and such other places As they suspected might be places of Refuge. It would be tragic if the Prague government permitted itself to be led to the convenient opinion that everything has now been steered into the safety of routine Diplo Matic said the Frank Furter Zeitung. Commenting on the organization of an auxiliary police by the czechoslovak government the Tage Blatt said does a state which arms its underworld for criminal purposes still deserve to be treated As a state Czechoslovakia is a Centre of in Cendia ism in the Middle of Europe. A German writer reputed to be one of the Best informed in Ber Lin said today even without waiting for the next meeting Between Hitler and Chamberlain we might be forced to take Strong action if for in czech Border Wall of steel e e i c h e n b e a Czechoslovakia near the German sept. 19.
