Page eight Winnipeg free saturday october 28, 1939 mayor objects Yorkshire sunk by a boat Queen demands Sii onite quit property committee resignation of Aid. C. E. Simonite from the civic property committee was called for by mayor John Queen at the civic finance committee Friday. During the past summer Aid. Simonite s firm c. E. Simonite limited has acted As agent for purchasers of City property and received five per cent commis Sion on these sales. When the committee came to consider a recommendation from the property committee that the regular commission on such a Sale be paid to the firm mayor Queen raised the question of propriety. The civic property committee is composed of Aid. Of g. Thompson. Aid. Thomas five and Aid. Simonite and is a sub committee of the finance committee. It certainly does not seem Good practice for a member of this com Mittee in consider offers in which his own firm is interested and i hunk Aid. Simonite should resign from the property mayor Queen declared. Aid. Simonic admitted being placed in an embarrassing position because the City owned so much real estate any real estate firm that wanted to stay in business had to go to the City. I d gladly get off the property committee if you desire he told the committee. Should be barred both Aid. Flye and Aid. Thomp son defended the Way Aid. Simonite had acted on the committee Bill London oct. 28. The entire resources of new zealand Are at the disposal of the British govern a mint Peter Fraser. New zealand s minister of education said on his arrival Here last night to attend the conferences Between Empire leaders and the British government. He told newspapermen that the masses the new zealand people Are standing feel there is something Worth fighting for the conditions they have won and their place in the British he said. Or. Fraser said new zealand will Send England butter cheese and contended that All aldermen should other produce vastly out of proper he barred from doing business with Tion to the size of the country in 1he City. Ald. Simonite in t the Only Aid. Flye asserted. A couple of a Cess ago a couple men came before the properly committee and arranged to lease the playhouse theatre for s400 per month. Then at the finance committee they said there was a delay in getting their equipment Here and asked that the lease be from Jan. 1 instead of nov. 1. The committee of course sent the lease Back to the property com Mittee. Then Aid. Blumberg said that throws it wide open again such quantities As Able. Does t when the property committee met. Aid. Blumberg was there with the two Aid. Flye continued. When the recommendation came Back to the finance committee it stipulated that the men were to be Given five per cent interest on the rent for the 23rd and 24th month of the lease which they were to Deposit in Advance with the City. No commission was asked for or mentioned but i certainly take it that that five per cent is commis he charged. I might Tell the committee that i have very Little to do with the real estate sales department of my company and Seldom know about these deals before they come before the Aid. Simonite said. I feel As the mayor docs and will think Over his Aid. F. G. Thompson said Aid. Simonite was always very Frank. But we can t dispose of this prob Lem by one change. You will re Call thai i tried and failed to gel Council to Stop aldermen doing business with the City. Too often aldermen come before he property committee to try to press things he asserted. Says set up wrong mayor Queen made it Plain he was not criticizing Aid. Simonite but said he thought the. Set up wrong. Aid. Simonite agreed. Who is going to replace Aid. Simonite if he Aid. Dan Mclean asked. Aid. Thompson said that would cause some difficulty and Aid. Paul Bardal suggested the whole property handling system should be changed. The set up Over there is far from what it should he charged. What is needed badly is to have an experienced real estate Man placed in charge of sales. The Goldenberg commission r e c o m mends this and it should be Aid. Thompson said real estate men had nothing but disdain for the Way the City handled its property and would not try to push sales because of the delay they encountered in getting decisions made.
