Not All cases Are so acute. Sometimes the affliction will appear very slowly and the Progress is slow too. In such cases an operation May be avoided f the disease is recognized in time and proper treatment Given. Vari Ous types of poultices or other applications can be used to draw off the pus. I have seen cases of the disease Clear up with Only this treatment. The big obstacle to treatment in time to avoid an operation is that is symptoms Are so much like those of other diseases causing precious Ime to be wasted treating the child or arthritis or rheumatism or some Hing else. Often if local symptoms Aren t very noticeable the Case his Ory of fever chills rapid pulse will Point to typhoid sometimes the adult patient will hink he just has a touch of Rheu to autism and will put off seeing the doctor until the disease has pro dressed to a stage where Only an operation can save his life. I remember Well the first Case i met after beginning my practice in Callander Over thirty years ago. A Man came to my office to Tell me Little boy was ill with a sore leg. The parents thought he had rheumatism and had kept him in bed for several weeks hoping that would cure him. Now he has become delirious. He gave me More details As we drove Twenty Miles out to the lome where the boy Lay and i was baffled by the Man s description of what was wrong with his boy. But even though i had never Nan died a Case before and never seen one outside of medical school the moment i looked at the boy s leg i anew what it was. He was about twelve and had been sick for a Cou ple of months. He was wasted and but his left leg which was swollen and red and hot to touch. In a couple of places pus was leak ing through it was plainly osteomyelitis. Unfortunately parents often. Are As Blind to advancing symptoms of serious diseases As that. If i were confronted with such a Case today i would take the child straight to the Hospital. It is the place serious diseases. But in those Days there was no Hospital near roads were bad and transportation slow. What i had to do i realized with sinking heart was operate right there and then if the boy was to be saved. I explained to the parents what had happened and what had to be done and they helped All they . But i had to anaesthetized the patient with chloroform with one hand while operating with the other on an improvised operating table in a poorly . I Cut a Slit about six inches Long Down the leg and the moment my lancet struck the Bone i knew by the feel of it. That the Bone was dead and that it would have to come out though not necessarily at this time. I kept the leg drained for a month and then i was Able to take out Bone splinter about six inches Long and varying from a half to an Inch and a half in Width. As i remember it was another month before i was sure i Hadje Movell All the dead Bone and All this while the poor kid had to be kept in splints to keep his leg Bone straight i guess it was a year before the Bone was completely healed and it must have been two years before he w3b .1.1.
