Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 16, 1940, Winnipeg, Manitoba Page twelve Winnipeg free press tuesday january 16, 1940 Back on Joe Mowry again Joe Mowry the master mind of the Winnipeg maroons and the Man who led the club last season to the Northern baseball league Pennant and Champion ship has been re engaged by the club directors it was announced monday. Mowry is at present in St. Louis and has notified club officials he already has several new players lined up. According to the newly engaged manager these players Are All of a calibre he feels certain will please local Ball fans. Mowry also sends word he has arranged for the maroons to open their Spring training at St. Louis later moving to Shakopee minn., where the team trained last season. Speed skating trials to select the Manitoba Standard bearers in the forthcoming International meet at Minneapolis were held at Wesley rink on monday night. Frigid sub Zero weather kept the attendance Down but the general performance of the athletes in the various events very Good considering the fact that All participants have been greatly handicapped by Lack of practice ice up until recently. Three local records went by the boards. In the Junior three Quarter mile Bob Newman hashed Home in front of his Field to set a new Mark of in the midget Section b. Gray set a new record of 19.4. The third record shattering performance was established by b. Mitchell in the girls midget 165-Yard race. Her time was 19.2. Fabian Mousseau Veteran of the local ice lanes stood out in the senior events copping the 220, 880 and two mile races to establish a Lead Over All in the aggregate with s total night s work of 90 Points. Mcdougall who finished second in these same event was number two among the seniors with 60 Points. John verhoef s victories in the men s intermediate 880 and one mile races and a second in the 220, ran his Point standing to 80, the second Best performance of the evening. Newman with 60, topped the Junior boys standings and t. Thompson leads the juveniles with 30 Points. In the midget boys class Gray topped Audley 50 to 30. Aud Ley won the 110-Yard sprint finish ing ahead of Gray but through some unfortunate Accident was not called out for the dash which was taken by Gray hip record breaking performance. In the senior women s standings. H. Deas and m. Cove Are tied with 40 Points each. The intermediate Leader is e. Whalley with 40. B. Mcguire tops the juniors with 30, j. Sebastian the juvenile with 60, and b. Mitchell leads the midget girls with 60. The second and concluding night of the trials will take place tonight at Wesley and on the results of both night s races will depend the make up of the team that will get the coveted trip to the South. John finished first in the intermediate 880 and one mile races and placed second in the 220. He stands second in the men s standings with 80 Points and should be assured of a place on the team. Gold wins close one paced by Ross Waldron varsity s Brown and Gold squad ran out a 40-39 Victory Over maroons Mon Day night in one of closest matches in the . Intermediate league this season. Waldron ran up a total of 16 Points As the High scoring eager o a night s play which saw Aqua Terras Stop Lazy a 19-16, in the second game of the doubleheader. Varsity owed their slim Edge to Waldron s accuracy in the first half and left the floor at intermission leading 24-20. After the rest maroons bottled up the varsity at tack and were coming up slowly As the whistle sounded. Close checking and a concentrated offensive gave maroons a 19-16 Edge in the second half just one Point Short of sending the game into overtime. For the victorious varsity Crew Waldron s 16 Points were away on top. With Budnitsky shooting 12 Points for maroons. A three Point advantage in the first half gave Aqua Terras their 19 if win against Lazy l Loop sters who fought Back viciously after the intermission to split scoring honors at 9-All. Arriving from Winnipeg by bus the skaters put on two performances lasting two hours. Junior soloists were Shiela Reid Roberta Wilcox Margaret Kennedy and Frank Sellers. For two periods the University of Saskatchewan huskies led by George Brent came Rushing from behind in last four minutes of play with five goals to defeat University of Manitoba bosons 8-5 in a Western inter collegiate hockey game for the Halpenny trophy at tie Rutherford rink Here monday night. It was Hie third defeat in the series Tor the Manitoban who dropped two games to the Alberta Polar bears at Edmonton last Fri Day and saturday.
