Reports of Large sales of australian wheat to Japan estimated around bushels the disposal of slightly More than bushels of Canadian wheat to Russia featured the week s wheat developments but from a Market standpoint the period was uneventful with wheat prices moving narrowly in rather drab sessions. Export business in Canadian wheat for the week was placed in the neighbourhood of bushels included the Sale of at least two cargoes to the United kingdom As Well As fair quantities to scandinavian countries. While the recent Large purchases by great Britain other import no countries have Given the Statis ical position a much More favor Able aspect will have a con Tractive influence a Long standpoint united1 states Vinter wheat conditions continue he dominating Factor in the immediate trend of the Market. Just now the american Belt has entered i dormant period May remain of for several weeks. Outlook obscure it has been pointed out that Sel Dom has the United states Winter wheat situation been As obscure As t is at present. While reports Are contradictory As to the adequacy of the protective Snow covering this does not appear to be causing much concern at present. What is puzzling crop authorities is whether the Large acreage of unterminated wheat in Kansas other states will derive any Benefit in the Spring from the recent snowfalls if so to what extent. Another question which can Only be answered As the season progresses is the damage to germinated wheat from Winter killing. This is important in View of reports of Drifting Snow below Zero temperatures which have prevailed in the Belt during the past week. Russian purchases from a Canadian standpoint the russian purchases of Cana Dian wheat attracted consider Able attention with the . Credited with taking four cargoes mostly Garnet grades for shipment out of Vancouver to Vladivostok far Eastern rus Sian port. While the International situation gave a new slant to the russian business the transaction was no unusual from an Export Point o View As the soviet Union has Satis fied her requirements for the Vladivostok area in previous year by taking United states Cana Dian wheat. Practical reasons lie behind the seeming Paradox of an exporter o wheat being also an importer o wheat. It is much cheaper for rus a to bring wheat to the far East Ern port by the Shorter water route Han transport it via a Long expensive rail haul from the Interior if Russia. Last year because of the Export subsidy on United states wheat most of the russian business went to the . Although one cargo if Canadian wheat was also taken. This year the United states Export subsidy has been discontinued except on shipments to China Hong Korng american Export prices Are out of line leaving Van Couver the nearest base of supplies n North America further Progress by Australia in disposing of the surplus caused by he near record crop harvested this Eason was reported during the week with Japan said to have negotiated a Deal involving 000 bushels of australian wheat he shipments to be transported in japanese vessels which would solve the problem in finding Brit so tonnage. Australian situation following closely on recent Pur chases of australian wheat by Britain which were estimated at close to bushels his new transaction will Cut deeply into the australian sur plus with Broomhall placing the unsold balance of the crop at bushels while other Esti mates Are As Low As bushels. Cabled despatches indicate that Australia has other Export outlets in View if fur ther deals can be arranged the problem of disposing of the remainder Over the 10% months of the australian season should not be a difficult one. Argentine shipments turning to another Southern hemisphere country Argentina it is noted that this country continues to make substantial wheat shipments weekly with the currant week s clearance placed at slightly More than bushels recent weekly totals running Well above last year s figures. With Argentina s exportable sup plies currently estimated at bushels a great Deal of the new crop of poor Quality Competition from this source should not be keen As the season advances the usual quantities Are taken by neighbouring South american countries. In contrast with the present exportable sup plies exports in some seasons from the Argentine have reached As High As bushels with the five year average at bushels. has caused damage to . Winter wheat Broomhall comment there is a pause in the demand from the continent on Friday great Britain is occupied with loading shipping the bushels of wheat flour Pur chased from Australia Canada the Argentine last week. The Argentine wheat prices declined owing to the smal demand but not through any new bearish factors. The severe cold wave in the . Is Only moderating slight damage to seeded grains is thought to have been fairly general. The Argentine weather russian shipments hold coast spotlight Vancouver Jan. 20. Local Grain interest continued Fri Day to Centre around shipments to Vladivostok. While there were some rumours that the Canadian govern ment might halt shipments in View of the Ontario protest it was Felt that arrangements had been made with authorities before business was completed. Further it was re Mored Here that the . Govern ment has now refused permits for two . Ships chartered to take part of the shipment. There was nothing actually new worked Dur ing the session Friday. Nothing was loaded Here in the past. 24 hours while elevators took in bushels sending total stocks to a new High at bushels. Railways show 109 cars in terminals Here 171 cars in transit on . Divisions. New West Minster loaded bushels Fri Day making this season compared with bushels a year ago. Was Clear on Friday favourable for threshing hedging sales dominated the Market but cables did not infer that yields or Quality were showing up any better than previously announced. The Chicago Market declined in spite of the re establishment of he Export subsidy on american wheat american flour from the Pacific coast to China Hong Kong it is hoped that some surplus american Pacific wheat will be placed in Manchuria where supplies Are scarce. A cargo of american no. 1 dark Spring wheat is being shipped out which probably represents old business.
