Woman ashamed of Home is nervous uneasy hostess m by Elizabeth Thompson any bewildered parents will sympathize with the Mother who wrote dear mrs. Thompson will you please explain this in priority Complex business1. My daughter says i have Given her an inferiority Complex yet she admits hat she is never afraid to bring unexpected guests Home because m always neat keep the Home Well and am a Good Cook. Have i an inferiority Complex because i am nervous and uneasy when the guests come whose servants dress Jetter and have better Homes than we can possibly afford is refusal 0 go places where you know your Ery Best clothes will look out of place a sign of an inferiority com or just Good common sense Mother taught me to shun he very appearance of evil and by always to keep the Good opinions of neighbors and acquaintances. Fly daughter says it is none of the neighbors business what she does and that real friends will not be Ieve evil gossip. If i question the morals and intentions of any of her wends she says i am evil minded. Try to be charitable and As Ern As my own moral standards will allow but there Are some things just can t seem to accept. My husband and i have sacrificed a of to give our children All the education possible. He says we have educated them away from us. 1 got a better education than my parents did but i never thought of them giving me an inferiority Complex. Puzzled Mother. Probably your parents had More self Confidence than you have and were not overawed people were More Prosper Ous or better educated. You have deed done your daughter an in jury if Cru brought her up to think of her defects rather than Ler assets. Apparently you do this yourself. Clothes and furniture Are Only the Frame for your personality and if you have attractive qualities of mind and heart R.C. and poor alike will enjoy visiting you. It is definitely a sign of an inferiority Complex to be nervous and uneasy when entertaining Well to do friends. If you had Well founded Pride in yourself you would feel something like maybe my rugs Are worn and my clothes out of Date but the place looks Homey people enjoy my conversation and they like my cooking they Admire my work at the club so i need t you could forget your self and instead of being apolo Getic and making everybody uncomfortable you could be warm hearted and Friendly and your guests would feel you were a Worth while person who was genuinely interested in them. It is common sense of course not to go to form Al affairs in Street but at any informal gathering nobody needs to feel ashamed of Ordinary clothes which Are clean and Well pressed. Your attitude to morals May be an unconscious compensation for your inferiority feeling. There is a certain satisfaction in assuring yourself that you May be shabby but you have higher standards than some other people. However there has been a tremendous change in manners and customs in the last forty years and Many things which were considered proof of depravity in your youth Are today thought unimportant. If you have taught your daughter what you believe to be right and wrong and Given her a Good education you have done All that one human being can do to protect another. Now you should let her make up her own decisions and choose her own friends with out worrying or criticizing. You will find an excellent Dis Cussion of the inferiority Complex and its devastating effects in How to be Happy though by w. Beran Wolfe .
