Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - April 6, 1940, Winnipeg, Manitoba Page twelve Winnipeg free press saturday april 6, 1940 tenacity Marks growth of women s Institute in Canada and abroad the s is the fourth in a series of articles written by members i the Winnipeg Junior league on leading women s organizations in the City by Grace Young. In 1897, in Stoney Creek Ontario a Young Mother lost her first boy of 18 months. The doctor attributed his death to improper feeding and lamented the ignorance of Young mothers. Of matters concerning the Home Adelaide Hoodless May have been ignorant of child care but hers was the Pioneer spirit which saw through her own tragedy the need of her Community and her ilme. She resolved that other women should be spared her sorrow it enlightenment was All that was needed. She began to speak in her own Community urging that girls and Young women be Given opportunities to study homemaking. At one meeting someone said the men have an Institute which per mits the Farmers to meet and improve their knowledge of the care of soils crops and livestock Why cannot we have a women s Institute that will bring women together to improve their knowledge of Home and so the idea was born which was to spread throughout Canada in a dozen years and which was later to reach Britain and Europe. The first Constitution was writ ten Down by six Young couples in Stoney Creek sitting round a Din ing room table. All Winter they had met to think and plan together. They wrote for their own direction these words which have since be come the guiding principle of All women s institutes a nation cannot Rise above the level of its Homes therefore we women must work and study to Gether to raise our Homes to the highest possible Manitoba in 1910 the Institute movement arrived in Manitoba in 1910. An English Bride lonely in her new Homestead read in her husband s copies of farm crops about the institutes in Ontario and timidly suggested the idea to her neighbors. Once again through one person s initiative an idea took shape and flourished. In Morris about the same time was organized a second Pioneer Institute. Today there Are 154 institutes in Manitoba with a membership of approximately idea goes to Britain the vision so persistently followed by Adelaide Hoodless of Stoney Creek was to be carried by a woman of like imagination and creativeness across the sea. In 1915, mrs. Alfred Watt who had been an enthusiastic Leader in the move ment in British Columbia moved to England with her two boys. Great Britain was at War. Conditions required and urged that the women in country districts and villages be United for service to the nation. The women were will ing but How was it to be accomplished the Canadian woman at tended meetings heard the prob Lem discussed and suggested the women s Institute. The idea was adopted and has since become the strongest woman s organization in great Britain with institutes and a membership of in this movement the woman of the Manor and the woman in the cottage uni Ted in aim work together. They think of their Homes As the real nucleus of the where people Are not merely cared for physically but developed in Char Acter to build the nation. It is interesting to note that Rural women s organizations began in Germany and Finland very soon after the movement started in can Ada Viz 1898 and 1899, and have developed steadily exercising an increasing influence. Gradually Rural women in other countries be Gan to organize and since the War an International organization has been formed called the associated country women of the world. Trien Nial conferences Are held the last one being held in London in 1939 with representatives from 29 coun tries present. And now let us return to our own province and examine More closely what our 154 institutes Are doing. Prom miss Thompson i Learned that he Effort is constantly to keep in mind the original aim of the inst was and is Educa ional. To this end the monthly programmes Are planned to Foster activities which will require the members to think speak Lead tudy and to become better Home makers. The tendency of women to do hard work has led them int of much Community activities which while Good in themselves should lot remain the first responsibility it the women. Thus they have Ini rated Community Halls rinks rest Ooms libraries Relief work and clinics. The development in pro Ress just now is the move to trans or responsibility for these projects o the Community As a whole.
