Page eight Winnipeg free press saturday june 15, 1940 echoes of France big guns Boom at Shilo Camp As units of artillery prepare by Norton Anderson. Shilo Camp man., june the Battle in France rages French 75 my. Field guns Are pounding at the advancing German tanks with telling effect. Here at Shilo Camp the 6th Field regiment r.c.a., is practising in a wide Field scheme with 18-Pounders, which Are somewhat similar to the French gun and comparable to the German 77 my. Field gun. Few persons outside the military Are aware of the potentiality of these artillery units that smash tanks from hidden gun positions so to Sec the behind the scene activity and painstaking preparation necessary for this important Divis Ion i toured the Field Southeast of Camp with . P. C Tess. . Of the 13th Battery from Winnipeg 21st from Saskatoon 91st from Calgary and the a Lith from Nelson and Vancouver . Which form the Field regiment numbering More than 600 men. Tank tactics have changed considerably in the last few years and Field guns do not As a Rule engage the tanks at a greater distance than 500 Yards. Two guns Are concealed from overhead and front by being backed into the front Edge of the Woods in a Battery there Are three troops each with four guns placed approximately 1.000 Yards apart. By Means of Trig Points located by engineers and bearing pickets calculated by technicians it is possible to pin Point on a map the exact location of guns and two Pound anti tank guns which protect the Field guns. Shrapnel used. The ammunition supplied in Camp is mostly shrapnel which can be fired As overhead bursting time shrapnel or percussion that is. Bursting on Impact. A certain amount of he. Commonly called Daisy and smoke which is caused by burst ing phosphorus filled shells to Blind the enemy observation posts Are also used in training. But in the War areas Little shrapnel is now being used. The eyes of the Battery Are the of pips 1 where the Battery com Mander and one or two troop commanders set up observing instruments. Targets in front of this Post can be accurately pin pointed on a fighting map and in course of training they Are first checked by silent fire and then booming Cann Nading. It is a simple mat Ter to engage targets which appear in the zone. Two Large Concrete observation posts in the Prairie at Shilo Camp Are used to observe the fire connected by telephones to the Bat Tery position. Then the shells come zooming Over and drop within 400 Yards of the Concrete observing Post. Shrapnel bursts Forward so there is no danger of stray pieces of Metal finding a Home with the observers. In addition each troop is sited so As to have Good Fields of fire on the flanks for anti tank guns. Then at each Battery position there is a company Post officer uses Survey instruments to give accurate angles to each troop ensuring that the resulting lines of fire will be parallel to the Battery Zero line. Field artillery regiments have expanded considerably with each 12-gun Battery having 68 vehicles and a strength of 26v men. Head quarters where1 All the calculations Are done is nearly half As Large As one of the batteries. Major n. F. Smith Vancouver is Battery commander the 13th and 21st while major h. E. Smith Calgary is in charge of the 91st and a Lith. The artillery Range the largest a Canada Points toward the Spruce Wood Forest Reserve which is not inhabited.
