Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 19, 1940, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press wednesday june 19, 1940 confused minds Bloom gathers reactions to War on southward Tri Chester a. Bloom now in route by car for Washington to take up his rce press correspondent there is writing a series c articles about what he finds Alon the Way. By Chester a. Bloom. Beloit Wisconsin june 19. Rugged tree Clad Hills and Green Fertile valleys of Eastern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin through which i drove today Are not unlike the smiling terrain of France which the Iron Heel of Hitler has trampled. I could not help but think How astonished these prosperous Happy and peaceful Farmers and Little business men would be to find the United states suddenly involved in this War. Rifles body organization continue Lieve of them really be d e b a c 1 e Ine Naces the United states. They Are Siili living in the flamboyant twenties and confused thirties and their minds Are totally unadjusted o the revolutionary philosophies which have submerged Europe. A Cheri Norless. They Are beginning to think about the War. A Beloit just asked me suppose great Britain is de even you May have Gin gives heated by Germany what will can Ada do1. " answer i said if you la answer this first. What will the United states if Canada is invaded we would have to get in the be replied. But you have just told i said that it would be no use for the United states to enter the War because she could not do anything being totally unprepared that it will take her two years at least to build up a military Force sufficient to face the totalitarian opposed to War i guess we could t do much was All he could think of to say. The truth of the matter is that 90 per cent of the american Public in the Middle West is violently opposed to the United states taking an Active part in the War i might put it 100 per cent. As i have yet to meet or talk to a single Ameri can so Long As they do not know i come from Canada who would approve declaring War against Ger Many. The psychology of this attitude was explained to me by Tom Dillon. Managing editor of the Minneapolis Tribune. I once worked As a re Porter for Tom Dillon when he was the City editor of the Seattle Post intelligencer in the Good old Days. He is a Man accustomed to viewing his american fellow citizens objectively and in my Long experience. I know none for whose Rood judg ment i have greater respect. Two powerful factors two of the most powerful fac tors that have created such a Strong anti a. Sentiment in the United said or. Dillon Are the Art of modern radio broadcasting a no e do the members of american 4 out or 5 a be victims i a Micai shows Tore than the dramatization of War news i organization of a Volunteer re serve in the form of a Rifle association will continue under provincial or municipal authority de spite formation of infantry Reserve companies and compulsory National service . A. J. Riley commanding officer of the Volun Teer Reserve of Manitoba said wednesday. A statement from col. Riley said in part the department of National de Fence have authorized the formation of infantry Reserve companies to be on Call for emergency service. They will be attached to infantry units of the non permanent Active militia. It is expected that recruiting for these infantry Reserve companies will be started at once. For various reasons most of those who have registered with the Volunteer re serve As Well As Many from other parts of Manitoba for whom there has been no general registration will not be Able to join such infantry Reserve companies. It has been suggested to the department of National defence that the scheme should be enlarged to include Rifle associations which could take on everyone willing to serve. The question of compulsory National service which is under Dis Cussion at Ottawa while it does not directly affect the Volunteer Reserve May delay action at Ottawa. The Volunteer Reserve committee in the meantime will go ahead with preliminary organization. If the department of defence does not authorize a Rifle association organization will be completed under provincial or municipal authority or both. Clinical shows Tore than y regulation and would depend on advice of technical defence depart ment officers and requirements of Industrial and productive Man Power. In the last War the 1917 conscript Ion Law called for compulsory service of men 20 to 45 years of age Ingle or widowers without Chil Dren. They were divided into age groups of five years each starting with those of 20 years. The present act mentions no age unit in connection with manpower mobilization. Nor does it Divide manpower into categories. In connection with Industry or. Power said a National registration s to be taken immediately. A Simi a Survey was made in june 1918. Britain looks to air Force for defence by Francis Stevens London june 19. Special Cable to recess e the undivided attention of the enemy All Britain May become a Battleground when Hitler a looses his total warfare upon this Island. Air Power probably will prove he decisive weapon in the coming Battle. Unless our numerically weaker air Force achieves Mastery air Slaughter of civilians is Likely to quite Large. K May be a matter of Days or weeks before the full blast is Felt. Instead of scattering their Effort Ermany will probably marshal heir forces More strongly and at empt a concentrated blow. From present indications Britain will re fire her entire air Force for her defence. The British expeditionary orce and the canadians will also be used 100 per cent in Home defence iut it is apparent that the air Force a More than army or Navy will be the decisive Factor. Infinitely More than men we need More planes air plane engines arms and ammunition. Today the daily Herald scoffs at Broomstick drilling Tating today there is no sense in aking a Man away from the Job of making rifles to Drill him with a the population appears Cool and determined. The canadians Here ire proud and in Many cases Happy to be with the old country these Days. Company Plo yees employees chartered Bank pm accountants West indies Force Well and Happy Winnipeg soldiers stationed in the West indies Are Well and Happy miss Peggy o Connor of Edmonton who has just returned from there stated in Winnipeg wednesday. The Canadian residents in the Island who number about 200, have established a special club for the entertainment of the soldiers known As the Maple Leaf club she reported. The club flies a Flag carrying the Canadian coat of arms and bears the Canadian coat of arms on its door. Students in Medicine and Engineer ing courses and universities police men workers in aircraft Indus tries and others. Enlistment of civil engineers was restricted to those who might be required As officers of Engineer units and of medical doctors to those required As medical officers. The enlistment of University graduates in the ranks was prohibited. They could Only get into the ser vice when they could qualify for appointment As commissioned officers. In All probability these regulations will hold in a general Way under the new system. The militia act lists three classes that might be incorporated into the new scheme. The first class composed of men from 18 to 30 who Are unmarried or widowers without children the second class those from 30 to 45 if unmarried and widowers Vith out children and the third the notice campers vacation lists and summer cottagers to the Vej cclement of departing Don t Forret a a ppr of Stanlen White Rab to fire too split Bce Ond Relief fron nun bum insect bite and acre Tiehes.
