Not the Type caused by overfeeding to which i referred yesterday but the kind that is caused by some infection. The medical profession usually refers to it As acute intestinal intoxication or intestinal to Xemia. It is better known among laymen As summer complaint. When this kind of diarrhoea afflicts your baby you must act quickly. Its symptoms develop much More rapidly than does diarrhoea from overfeeding. Your child May be perfectly Normal and healthy one Day and Twenty four hours later he will be vomiting every time he takes anything in his stomach. At the same time he will be passing watery stools. Very often these stools Are accompanied by the passage of blood. Sometimes this blood Only stains the diapers but too often it is there in some quantities. The Onset of the disease is so sudden that mothers Are often mis led. They infer that baby has just eaten something that has disagreed with him and will be All right in a Day or so. This waiting for the Dis ease to Clear up itself is very unwise. If your baby develops any symptoms similar to those described above during the next couple of months time calling your doctor. Loss of water from the body is so rapid when intestinal intoxication seizes on a child that he is in great danger of losing his life. Where does this infection come from often from the food the baby eats. It May be on the nipple of the bottle from which he takes his food. It May be in the bottle into which the milk is poured. It May be in the milk itself. Congo. Quentlyn it is necessary for Mother of a bottle fed baby to make absolutely sure the bottles and nipples she uses Are thoroughly sterilized. Give them no Chance for contamination after they Are sterilized. Make sure that the milk is pasteurized and that the Container it is kept in is sterilized also. Of course these rules should be followed religiously the year round but during summer precautions must be doubled for the chances of infection Are greatly increased. It in t hard to see what a Strong argument is made in favor of breast feeding by the necessities of sum Mer care of babies and the Preven Tion of summer complaint. It is almost impossible for breast milk to become contaminated and give the baby intestinal intoxication. As a matter of fact studies of this infection show that it is confined almost entirely to bottle fed babies. However if the Mother of a breast fed child brings her baby into close Contact with another baby who has the infection he May fall a victim too. Tomorrow More about summer care of baby.
