Marshal Italo Balbo once one of Benito Mussolini s closest friends and Leader of a mass air plane flight from Italy to the Chicago world s fair in 1933, has been killed in an air Battle Over Obruk Libya it was announced officially today. Tragedy that overtook the Canadian destroyer Fraser when she collided with another Craft a Short distance off Bordeaux France and went Down with a loss of 45 dead or missing occurred while she was Hunting Down an enemy Craft that might have been in the Vicinity it was revealed today. In the darkness it was said there was no Chance to avoid the collision. When the Craft met the Fraser was Cut in two the fore part Sank almost immediately but Many of those aboard that part of the warship managed to jump into the sea and were picked up by a Lifeboat from the Craft that struck the Fraser her death blow. The ill fated Canadian destroyer was struck just aft the Bridge. While the forepart plummeted be Low the Waves almost immediately the aft Section representing Al most two thirds of the Craft stayed afloat after rolling on its Side. As this Section of the Fraser tossed in the angry Waves the com Mander of a second Canadian War ship drove his ship full Speed ahead alongside and somehow held her so close that a member of the res cuing Crew said we took about 50 off without them getting their feet wet. They were Able to step onto our deck from what was left above the Waves of the the second Canadian warship which was engaged in the same operation with the Fraser performed what naval men Call a Miracle of navigation to Rescue 90 officers and men of the stricken Craft and an unstated number of refugee sol Diers who were aboard her.
