German government in a formal made Public by the state department today rejected this country s warning to keep hands off the Western hemisphere. Chancellor Adolf Hitler s government at the same time however said Germany had Given no indication of any desire to interfere in the Western hemisphere or to seek territory Here. The Berlin foreign office said that therefore it could see no reason Why the american hands off warning had been addressed to the German government. Berlin also coupled its rejection with a declaration that if the american republics expected to obtain respect for the principles stated in the Monroe doctrine of non interference with affairs in the american continent by euro Pean nations they should likewise Ralston being sworn in Ottawa july 5. New finance minister will be announced on monday and Kon. J. L. At the same time a British United press report from Washington quoted French sources there As stating that the French Island of Martinique off the coast of Vene refrain from interference in the affairs of Europe. The German noted stated that in this Case the interpretation of the Monroe doctrine implicit in the communication of the govern ment of the United states would amount to conferring upon some european countries the right to possess territories in the Western hemisphere and not to other euro Pean countries. It stated that it is obvious that such an interpretation would be untenable. The German note was made Public together with an official comment on it by Secretary of state Cordell Hull. I feel that no useful purpose i ill be served at this time for this government to undertake to make any farther communication to the government of the German Reich on the subject matter of the communication above Hull said. Minister Mackenzie King gave notice in today s Bouse votes and proceedings that on Mon Day he will introduce a Bill in the commons providing the death penalty for treachery and life imprisonment for acts to assist the enemy.
