Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - April 21, 1944, Winnipeg, Manitoba Tout top instrumentalists compete Aikins trophy won by Alma Walberg instrumentalists had their moment thursday at the Mani Toba musical festival when four winners in preliminary con tests competed for the Aikins memorial trophy highest award the festival has to offer for instrumental selections. Adjudicator Max Pirani who gave Alma Walberg top place in this contest declared himself tremendously pleased with All the won Peg free press today april Al finalists. I m certain you la agree with he said to the audience that this a very Fine class indeed. If All instrumental work come up to tonight s Standard Winnipeg can really feel that it has had a wonderful year in judging the performances which included three pianoforte selections and one violin Solo or. Pirani said a very High Ideal was let by the adjudicators. All other thing being equal this class was judged not so much for detail As Lor general effect or artistic Effort this did not mean that the technical Side of the performance was neglected by the adjudicators but rather that finding All four entries up to Par technically the judges balanced each performance against the others for their More spiritual presentation. Pirn i said and Tho intonation throughout was Beautiful. Pianists highly complimented the three pianists in this class Ell highly complimented on their performances were Joan. Clegg who played be Thovan s " sonata opus no. 2 and Debussy s the buried Cathedral Cornelia Gamow key. Whose offerings were Rachmaninoff s serenade Albenzi Godowsky s tango and the by Thovan sonata in d major opus 10.
