High Price of garbage carrots with tops on Cost twice As much As the de topped variety by june Horne when shopping around to investigate prices of i Resh fruits and vegetables we occasionally find evidence of what seems like. Discrepancies. Such is the Case with the new imported carrots that Are coming into the shops now. These carrots Are sold in two ways that is the tops on and with the tops removed. The carrots with tops on that Are sold in Bunches Are Selling at 8c and us a Pound. Those with the tops re moved have a ceiling of 6c a Pound Over which they cannot be sold. Now the tops of carrots Are of absolutely no use to the average Are merely Dis carded. Therefore it would follow that there is a much wider Dif Ference in Cost of useable carrots Victory Bill proves highlight of Catholic youth parliament a Victory Bill highlighted proceedings at the eighth annual Catholic schools Junior parliament meeting in their first session at St. Paul s College Friday evening. The 33 members representing 13 schools met in Paul Shea Hall before a Large audience of their parents friends and teachers. Read by Lloyd Mcneil minister of War services of St. Alphonsus school the Victory Bill requested the knights of Columbus to super Vise a programme including organization of first Aid classes Salvage corps and Junior red Cross groups in every school. The minister of finance Donald Crierie of is. Edward s school asked his fellow Grade 8. Pupils to encourage their parents and older friends to support the sixth Victory loan. Wylie made suggestions for an educational pro gramme consistent with the prob lems of modern youth. Included would be the extensive use of motion pictures increased dramatic work arts and Craft studies and less Homework. The speaker was Leo Hunter. Other officers Are William t try i Rev. J. John Between those sold with and with out tops than would even appear on the Price tickets in the shops. Actually we weighed out Bunch carrots at of a Pound. It took approximately pounds of these the tops to yield one Pound of the carrots alone. Consequently he Cost of Pound of carrots bought with the lops on is 13c to 14c a Pound. That makes them More than twice As expensive to buy As carrots bought without the which As you will remember Are sold at a ceiling of go a Pound and May be purchased for even less Aan that in some shops. When we spoke of this difference 1o an official of the wartime prices and Trade Board Here he said that nothing could be done about this Here As the Price was set by the Board Nottawa and presumably nothing would be done to remedy the situation because actually no one was being asked to buy carrots in the does Bunch. Settle however this the question still concerning Why these Are More expensive even in initial Cost than carrots without tops. Storekeepers Don t make any More per Pound on the Bunch carrots than they do on the bulk that is they Don to on the surface. We say this because storekeepers prefer to keep Bunch carrots for the tops have a tendency to keep the new carrots fresh for a longer period. Carrots they buy without tops will Wilt and lose their crispness much quicker than those with tops attached. Therefore it is to the advantage of the. Storc per to sell Bunch carrots far there is not As much waste in handling them and Conse Cueny Here is less variation on his profit with Bunch carrots. Liberal candidate april 22. Up j. G.
