Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - April 28, 1945, Winnipeg, Manitoba Page eight saturday aphid. 1945 food Short sharing is problem by j. A. M. Cook free press War correspondent Headquarters third Canadian group Oberhausen Germany apri 26. Special appears to be housing adequate for about half the people remaining in Ger Many food to last on Short rations for some months and work enough for the next two generations. German civilians Are getting shelter by doubling up. Food that s another matter. Roughly speaking if All the cur rent food resources in Germany could be equitably distributed there might be enough to assure calories daily for six months. And Given careful Hus banding of crops the same Plain fare might be stretched through the Winter. Yet it is possible that Germany be desperately hungry and that millions May starve next Winter for there Are signs of a Short sup ply and with distribution facilities in chaos this worse facing starvation there were four million people i the Ruhr on this Side of the Rhin before and Many of them will fac starvation next Winter unless w get food to them a British Genera said the other Day. What he inferred was not necessarily a Matte of shipping food from Allied coun tries. I have just been through the Ruhr and i feel the same Way Abou it. These people Are getting hungry they Are definitely on Short sup plies and by next Winter they Wil. Face starvation. Are we going to take food away from French and belgians Are we going to ask dutch and poles and greeks to share food Relief with the people who brought on the War Are we going to ask the British to go on rationing rigidly so that the germans May live plenty of people will suggest the widespread starvation. At the same time it does t reveal soft hearted Ness. The sheaf policy is realistic Only Way for the germans to feel the full Impact of defeat is to let them starve others say humanity will never permit in the end Well save the germans. V military flan it is Plain that supreme head quarters has a military plan which is fully supported and which efficiently executed will not permit Well feed the germans Only to prevent widespread epidemics or disease or actual death from starvation and there s no place in this policy for supplying amenities. The first move to stave off starvation is not to ship in Allied food but to make germans share the food stocks that Are Here. My feeling is that the germans who Drew from Many occupied lands were better fed during the War than the French or British and hat the hunger which now exists s nothing to what the dutch and poles and greeks have experienced during the past live weeks especially food distribution has been paralysed All Over Germany and Terman civilians have looted food stores. Food factories have been at a standstill from Lack of Power or workers. Undoubtedly much land Lay Idle at the seeding season. Declaring food stocks the head of the British zone Mili tary government says firm measures were taken to have the germans declare what food stocks were Avail Able in warehouses and they have found that some of these stocks Are named director a. Ashton was elected a director of Canadian Oil companies limited at the annual meeting. Or. Ashton is president of Canadian Wall paper manufacturers limited. He has been associated with this com Pany since its inception coming out from England in phones office jux 942 Laboratory 07 i4r optometrists opticians recoverable. They Are trying to get the German s to tidy up the Ware houses and assemble All food pos sible. Military government leaders say that Winter fighting across the productive Western Rhineland and in Eastern Germany caused serious reduction in the expected yield. It looks unlikely that there would be More than half the average crop of Vinter yield and other Early crops r. Areas seen. One can see no better Prospect for Spring seeded crops for the Eastern Shine and All the River area to the East have seen a cessation of activity at a critical time. Every burgomaster n Allied territory is being told to Jet the people out on the land and Ilant potatoes and from what we be Een they re digging. I feel that the germans will be Lucky if total farm production this is half what it would be nor Mally and that there will be tremendous difficulty distributing this Lecause of smashed railroads canals. Highways and distribution must be on a basis and plenty of people will go Short. In Canadian sectors the German colonel von Stern was so completely taken by Surprise to find himself a prisoner of Allied soldiers that he had t time to Don his trousers. The picture shows an american Soldier right and a French Soldier at left As they Salute their Pris Oner who was commandant of a prison Camp near Soest Germany. Cardin proposals for party Given Ottawa ont., april 28. Special proposals broadcast Over two stations last night in Quebec to form a new Canadian political party by Hon. P. J. A. Cardin for Mer minister in the King govern ment who left the Cabinet on the conscription Issue were summarized in the Montreal Gazette this morning As follows Hon. P. J. Arthur Cardin in his first radio Appeal announcing the name of his new political party the National front be front Nati Nalej stated last night in the Canadian sector. German families from blitzed cities will be settled temporarily on farms. The City family will help make up for labor shortage and they will be food. It should be remembered that we go on feeding Between five and six million German War prisoners though the germans must continue feeding foreign workers from the Eastern countries. The germans must live on about 1.500 calories three times what the people of Amsterdam were getting. They must get Down to a fare of probably less than half what they be lad. But we won t ship in food until typhus and typhoid set in in a big Way.
