Thompson i have hesitated for quite som time about writing you a letter t discuss my problems. I though when i came to College they nigh become better but they Are Nearl As bad As Ever. I was away nearly All of Thi past summer on a naval Trainin cruise and would like your David on several aspects of this trip believe that the problem of drink is a great one to Many Yonne people today and especially to me i was brought up in a family which considers liquor As the great sin i have never in my life seen Al Coholic beverages in our Home have never to this Date taken a drink and i wish you could see what it has got me. This summer when All the Fel lows were going ashore i was no one of their party. All i could do was to go to the picture show or go sight seeing. The Only time my services were required was when they needed someone to play the piano for them to dance or sing or help with the sunday service neither of these things was particularly thrilling. I must admit i saw More but was considered a snob. Mrs. Thompson what is a fellow to do when even his Best friends Call him stuck up snob and i do not say anything to anyone about drinking because they can do what they want. I do not preach to any of them or set my so called Virtues on a Pedestal s it not possible to have friends and still not drink or smoke my attitude towards going out with girls is different also. I be Lieve i going out and having Good lean fun and not having to be shamed to look at them the next a. This does not jibe with the other allows ideas and i am in their Pinion i like the Navy a great Deal and tend going on another cruise next Ummer. At present i am going to University. I was startled to find hat these ideas have even permeated to these so called places of higher learning. Do you thing i Ould join the Navy As a career and still maintain my present standards if i did. Do you think i would get anywhere i do not know whether i will go on with University or not. Although i have every Opportunity to do so but i wish to join the Navy. I know my Mother thinks if i join the Navy All is lost. However she does not forbid it. I have had service in the Navy so know most of it numerous advantages and disadvantages. Do you thing i should finish my course i am 20 now or join up and what about the moral prob lems one thing sure it would be a future and a sure Job. In doubt consult naval recruiting officers about the merits of a University degree before join ing us. I should think it be an advantage particularly if you want a commission. Abstemious personal habits should not be any bar to advancement rather the reverse. I Don t know about the records of Navy big shots but general Montgomery is an out standing example of a Soldier got to the top without drinking or smoking. General Marshall chief of staff of the United states army is another who does not drink according to his wife s Book Abou him. However i think you should d some Reading on psychology and on modern approaches to the problem of alcoholism. I think you woul be happier in your own mind ant More at ease with other men i you changed the basis for you code. Alcohol itself is not the Grea sin. Your own intelligence know that Many Good citizens use it. By alcohol working on people with personality defects particularly Lack of emotions immaturity and desire to escape unpleasant can do enor Mous damage of course if the people who use alcohol to compensate for their own deficiencies did not find this outlet they would Fin philandering bul lying inferiors Etc. But alcohol is the most available form and be sides it is More socially acceptable than the others. You Are very Wise to decide against using it. A Well adjusted personality does t need it and i is risky for anyone but Superman however cultivate All the. Hobbies and talents you can. So people won t think of you As the boy who does t drink but As the. Young Man who s musical Friendly a Good Tennis player and so on. Also make a joint of praising your friends for heir Good Points so they won 1 think you Are looking Down your nose at them. Members of alcoholics anon Nous do not criticize anyone else by drinking. They will go where liquor is served arid some even Erve it in their own Homes. But hey know that for themselves it s dynamite and they refuse to ouch it. You might adopt a similar to etude. Saying frankly that you Are afraid to drink and besides an t afford it.
