Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 19, 1948, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press thursday August 19, -1948 Page 17 oldest employed is Ephedrine _ it t a Tut to legs do How do you like your slides of in the second of Nerim of five m r 11 c 1 e s Deal inc Ullh be menu by which ii possible to of emulate a borne. The series has been written Lor the free press by reliable authority who wishes identity not be revealed. However All statements Are Well founded Siwl medical testimony can be by competent authorities in that Ilfeld. By trackman Ephedrine is perhaps the oldest stimulant employed on the race track. It is a derivative of an old chinese Herb called a Huang astringent and has been used by the chinese since 2760 . It was first introduced to Western Medicine in 1923 by or. Chen and or. Schmidt and was finally synthesised in 1927. That the chinese have Long recognized the drug As a potent Stim ulant is proven by the chinese Dispensatory of 1569 which mentions it As being valuable As a circulatory beside this old testimony the assertion by Many horsemen and some of those responsible for Tak ing saliva tests that Ephedrine is is not a certainly is not a stimulant if not used properly but is a most effective one if injected into a horse s horsemen favor Over Intra venous injection. In this respect it is interesting to note that in a., recent interview with a very prominent veterinary pathologist i was shown a Chart o indicate the drug s effectiveness. The Chart reveals that after an Intra venous injection of Ephedrine a horse s pulse beat Rose from 37.5 to 60 in a period of five min utes. The Rise was very rapid and the decline prolonged requiring 55 minutes for the pulse to return to Normal. If an intravenous treat ment will produce the above result it is Only logical that Intra muscular treatment will be More effective for racing. Purposes because the Peak will be reached More slowly and the decline will be less rapid. The Intra muscular treatment Al stimulant is sous it lows adequately for paddock and track delays. But even the less effective fast acting Intra venous method will measure of stimulation to the horse in a race As can be seen from the Chart mentioned. However with the muscular using retardant oils As a base for the drug there is Little doubt As to the drug s effectiveness being carried Over to the end of the race. The effects of Ephedrine Are substantially the same As Benz Edrine. In fact a source used As required Reading for most pharmacology courses refers to tables on Ephedrine when the similar actions of Benz Edrine Are wanted. This should conclusively prove the effective Ness of Ephedrine As a stimulant for being readily admitted As an effective stimulant the reluctance of some Bio chemists to acknowledge that Ephedrine can be and is used As an effective stimulant May possibly be traced to their de sire to conceal the fact that. Drugs not possible to catch in saliva tests exist on the race tracks. I can sympathize Only partially with this attitude because nothing has Ever been gained by burying a thing in anonymity. In the same line of thought it i Lake Trout have started taking the offered lures throughout the areas of North Western Ontario and Toba after an All summer Lull in giving sport to anglers. Reports during the. Past week indicate the Trout started about a week ago and have continued Strong since. I High Lake is showing up Strong. Anglers going into this Border Jake Are catching some of the Best Trout to be taken in the past few years. One Angler remarked that he was under the opinion the Lake was fished out until he went in last week. Trout Are still Down on the Bottom. Silk or. Nylon line is useless the Angler must have Metal drag his bait along ube Ieso. Coocen the the Bottom if he expects the fish to bite later in the season the fish will return to the surface. The Angler needs plenty of Metal line if he ejects results. Fisher men returning from Ontario Are talking in terms of seven or High Hundred feet. High Lake anglers Are using lines of 500-foot those using the conventional Root lengths Are finding themselves in the Short end of the catch. Gordon Hamilton of Penguin Camp Falcon Lake went into High Lake last thursday. Fishing was Good and the limit was obtained. He was using 500-feet of Metal line and Metal cobblers. Anglers going Over the Portage reported Good catches with the exception of one Day when the fish refused to bite. The wind was Strong on that particular Day. High Lake usually gets rough in the afternoon but this was an All Day affair and the Trout would not bite. This is not unusual. The forestry department have made a new Portage into High Lake those who know the Lake will re Call the High Rock at the Start of the Portage from Falcon Lake they have moved the Dock further Down the Bay and eliminated this hard climb of the Portage. Other Wise the Portage is the same length As previous. It is the old spot on High Lake which is producing Trout. The deep water off the Bald Island in the Centre of the Lake is where the fish Are coming from. Thi is usually a place where the firs of the fall season catches Are re ported. 1 a e. Whitbread has Caugh one of the largest Bass re ported from West Hawk Lake the fish weighed three pounds 1 ounces and measured is and half inches in length and 13 an live eighth inches around the Girt it was Friday 13, when the Fis was caught which dispels superstition. Cited that racing rules provide Iff penalties for the use of elec or mechanical appliances As stimulants. Actually there is very title difference Between using an ectrial appliance and Ephedrine. When an electrical appliance is sed you Are in using Eph Drine in so far As the Shock auses a vastly increased flow of he adrenal glands which causes he beating sensation humans feel after being frightened called Pon for a super human physical Effort which is inexplicable after accomplishment. If at a moment be this an overdose of the Adren 1 glands secretion were sent into he bloodstream the result would e similar though not As effect to an injection of Ephedrine. There is no desire on my part o give racing a Black Eye or to discredit anyone associated with he game. All i am doing is Point no out practices which exist to he detriment of racing and the general Public who support racing and Are largely ignorant of the act that some Chi Selers in racing Ike every other Enterprise will Cut every Corner they come to a ittle Sharp in an Effort to gain he upper hand. The Chi Selers should be exposed and putting them under Public scrutiny is a method of doing it. To Stop the use of Ephedrine As a stimulant is relatively simple. Its medically proven that the drug is effective if Given Intra Tuscul arly for about eight to ten hours if a system of receiving Barng were introduced and made compulsory except under special circumstances the use of the drug would at least be drastically reduced. Horses slated to run would be placed in the receiving barn under a guard a set number of hours before a race. In this Man Ner the horsemen who shoot Square As Well As the Public who have to Trust in tests that Are not 100 per cent effective will tested. The Chi Selers won t be. Able to cheat so easily and everyone will be better off.
