Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 28, 1948, Winnipeg, Manitoba 22 Winnipeg free press saturday August 25, 1945 Bucky Happy now Keller in form Charlie Keller by Jack Cuddy new York bup Bucky Harris is Happy today for the Pennant prospects of his Surg ing Yankees appeared brighter than at any time this season. Many improvements have de lighted Bucky. During the club s recent seven straight Streak but none tickled him More than the apparent return to form of outfielder Charlie kellers As Bucky sat in his stadium office he said Keller told me that he can hit a Ball for the first time now with out feeling pain in his hand. He broke that hand in two places and was out Many weeks. And. When he did come Back he could t grip the Bat right because of the pain in his hand. But the old King Kong is Okay now and hell be a big help Bucky said run production had been a feature of the yanks winning Streak. In those seven straight victories the yanks garnered a total of 53 tuns against Only seven for the opposition. He added of course Good pitching and Fielding has been nearly As. Important. Bokie Bob Porterfield proved himself a real major while the yanks were run Ning off their longest string of the everyone of the seven pitchers who took the Mound completed his Job. Porterfield registered two Vic tories As did Vic Raschi and Reynolds. De Lopat accounted for the other win. Did Bucky s big. Stake up of the team about two weeks ago have any bearing on the club s current drive ill say it he an swered it helped the run production. For example .1 was -able1 to keep Yogi Berra in the lineup by shifting him from behind the plate to right Field and shifting Tommy Henrich from right Field to first Berra while not too Good behind the plate is a valuable hitter. And can play almost any position and. Hit Well he said Catcher Gus niarhos and infielders Snuffy Stirnweiss and Phil Rizzuto had improved their hitting somewhat also. Yankee supporters Are confident that the Revivi fied club will be firmly perched on top by the time it finishes its 18 game Home stand. After the indians come the tigers. And Browns from the West and the senators and athletics. Boes will play at it. Frances fort Frances special Allan Boes of Winner of the Manitoba open and also the Manitoba Amateur Champion has entered the third International open Golf tournament to be held on the Rainy and country club course sunday. The tourney is expected to bring competitors from Minnesota head of the lakes area Kenora and other Points. Dales tie Junior finals paced by the four hit pitching of Fred Dunsmore Rose Dales roared Back Friday night to trounce. Elmwood giants 9-2 in the second game of the greater Winnipeg Junior baseball league final to deadlock the four out of seven series. Rather a drab affair the tilt played before Cash customers at Osborne stadium was a Complete reversal of the first excellently played match in which giants took a 1-0 decision. Third and fourth games of the series will be played in an afternoon evening doubleheader at the stadium. The Winnipeg champions will meet Regina in a series to declare a Western Canada title Holder. The series will be played in Osborne stadium Over the labor Day weekend. With Dunsmore hurling the third strike past 12 batters while issuing no free tickets Rose Dales were never in trouble. Facing 31 batters Dunsmore was very effective As he forced two batters in each the initial four frames to strike out. Jumping on Elmwood s Start ing Pitcher Del Buchanan for five runs ii the third inning Dales were in Complete command by Bob Sandberg Well do the Best with what we have to offer folks the bombers hit the Road this weekend for what should be a a couple of Days labor. I be heard some Tell it s just leading the lambs to the Slaughter and some say not so Many though that Well come Back with two wins tucked away. Well now i m not Sayin just How things will turn out but i do know this league will be rough sledding the whole Way through and that Means for two other teams As Well As the bombers. The ads have worked hard All week in preparation for a win. I d hate to see that spirit get clipped off before it comes to the lore. I found no one Down in the dumps because we were beaten last week in fact every Man on the squad has been eager to get himself better equipped for the rugged weekend. I Don t think there will be any saving ourselves for one game or the other. Guess the Best Way is to take them As they come How they and do the Best we can with what we have to offer. It s too bad of course that Hal Millon got himself banged up the other night we need him plenty. He s a game Little scrapper full of Pepper and rain to go. So far he has t quite shown what he can do with that Ball and it looks like a Miracle is needed to keep him running this week. The loss of one Man can unbalance the whole setup. Because Hal is out someone else will have to fill that spot thus weaken ing another position. West s plan to use All the men possible by spelling them off could backfire with a situation like that. My guess is hell use Hiney at Quarter Smith at full Geller at right half Foubister at flying Wing and myself at left half. That s . For a Start. Now Millon worked swell in there at right half and Hying Wing. Foubister a Voith a pulled muscle might give Way along somewhere then of course Bergson Hobson Williams and others will have to be ready to go. They Are. With a two game Tornado like Well run into anything can happen. We May find one of the boys required to go the whole trip without help and brother that s rough. S4 i remember last year. The papers read bombers cleaned in 25-0 drubbing or some such thing As that. The truth was Don Hiney had to play 60 minutes with a broken Collarbone and or eight of us had the screaming Teamies you but we were out there just the same. Those things Don t Al ways make up for excuses or alibis but you can see what effect they so often have. Because 28 fellas leave Winnipeg fully intending to win at All costs it s not a sure Omen. A think you May find today there will be More Good football played than so far this year. I think the Opportunity for improvement is greater not Only with our own team but with the other teams As Well. At least i la be going the other direction As you get the results of the bomber rough tussle. A Cincola wish i d gotten the assignment to cover the Green Bay Packer is new York giants game in Minneapolis this weekend. There Are at least a dozen men scattered on those two teams that i played with for several years. The packers Are loaded with some of my old cronies at Minnesota. The giants have for one Cliff Rothrock from Fargo n.d., a kid i d hoped to bring up Here. That la be a Good game. If any of you get it on your radio Call me when we get Back and give me the word. Offsides Norm Geller had his very cute Little daughter out during the scrimmage the other night every time Norm would the tussle she would cry and cry calling for her daddy we All got a big charge out of that and a Little rest too the old cold water Shower room fracas backfired on Don Smith As he waited for the next sucker to come along wonder who la make the fourth in the 832 mile Bridge game now that Mel Wilson is no longer with us. The races open another 14 Day stand at Polo Park today and probably no one has been looking Forward to the return of the horses More than Bert and Marge a couple of Winni Eggers Well known to read ers of the free press sports pages. Once again they will Start out the meeting with apiece and will Wager each Day. Bert generally makes his bets on the nose while Marge slightly canny will play pm to place. In the Spring meeting Bert got the laugh on his better half when he wound up with a profit of s15.15, while Marge out however. Marge is hoping things will be slightly different this time. Here Are their selections for Marge s bet stake ?28.00 today hair do with to place in the seventh race. Bert s bet stake today a Ullern with to win the fourth race. After five hits two of them an error which scored All the third Frame markers bord Anthony was called in by Elmwood manager Lurly Haas to put out the fire. Anthony pitched the rest of the tilt but was nicked for four runs and six hits. Both Elmwood tallies were unearned. Rose Dales first baseman Johnny Warren committed two miscues which combined with a single by Len Zebb counted the markers. A Milt sw1ndlehtjrst was the big gun in the Rosedale Bat Ting attack blasting out three singles. He was closely followed by Ken Little Andy Lillie and Gord Miller who each smashed out a pair of hits. The four Elmwood safeties were by Mike Daski and Don and Zebb the latter Poling out two. W a Odd the paths Elm Wood certainly did t look like the team they were in the. First tilt they seemed disorganized and showed Lack of spirit 1 Andy Lillie and Gord Miller each banged out a double for Rose Dales the nicest looking play of the night was when Rose Dales Gordy Simpson stole Home in the sixth inning the Miller Allison Warren combination for Rose Dales made a Snappy double play in the eighth Rose Dales will probably toss Don Reid at the giants in the first game today hoping to grab the All important one game Lead Frank Bath Gate will probably be the Elmwood Choice the pitchers showed amazing control issuing Only two walks i Del Buchanan and bord Anthony each passed one Rose Dales Fleet left fielder Ken Little turned in a standout game besides getting two hits and scoring three runs he made a great running catch of Steve Witiuk a. Fly Ball in the seventh after the Way they came Back the Odds will probably favor Rose Dales Andy Lillie played a grand game in right Field for Rose Dales despite an injured leg. Kiner Pittsburgh pirates Home run slugger says National league pitching is getting that s a significant statement from a hitter who s hammered More Home runs 35 than any other player in the majors this year. When i first broke in with the pirates three years Kiner recalls the league was Chuck full trying to fire the Ball past you. Now the pitchers Are using their Heads and playing Corners. That s Why a lot of batting averages have dropped at least that Avyay i be got anyone talking to Kiner usually mentions the record 60. Homers slammed by the late babe Ruth in 1927.
