Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 29, 1949, Winnipeg, Manitoba Wynn Tufeg free press. Friday july 29, 1949 Page 15 Bob Moir s aba1e it gave us quite a Jolt wednesday night when leafing through the Canadian press news items to see that coach Fred Grant the Saskatchewan roughriders had Cut six players off his squad bringing it Down to almost the identical Clup that will carry the Green and White through the fall Grid Campaign. Would t Frank Larson and Cam Doherty be in their glory i they could do the same thing. Just walk on to St. John s Colleg Field and say to themselves Well there s the club Well be carrying this and then have two Fuli weeks to ready them for thei Eastern Jaunt. Going through the list of hopefully attending the Blue Bombe Camp we find 52 names. Coach Larson would like to get a squad three deep in every spot a maximum of 36. The least he can carry with any Hope of winning anything this year is 30. Therefore he has two weeks to Cut that 52-Man squad Down to the required number and in the meantime get the club working As a Well organized unit. It s some Job and if Larson does it successfully hell More than deserve the plaudits that naturally will be thrown his Way. Of working on the basis of spots they filled on the various club on which they played last season we found a few interesting details on our possible list the most surprising of which is Thi fact that bombers could have a remarkably Strong line this season until a few Days ago the general feeling was that the Backfield a going to be the strongest Section. For Centre there Are four candidates six guards and 14 tackle there Are also six working for an end spot. Four have worked in the Quarter Slot with regularity since Thi lamp opened. For the remaining spots in the Backfield there Are i candidates. Import Wally Edwards who will arrive in Winnipeg Over the week end Heads the Centre list. He can also play guard tackle fullback. Behind him Are Biff Fliss who also could make a Fine plunger Doug Johnston of Ottawa and Jack Doanes who saw a Little service at the spot with bombers last year. Western conference All Star Bud Irving and import Mike Kissell who can also play tackle give a Good lift to the guard Section. Gord Perry and Ernie Ahoff and Ian Mctavish acid George Mcc Quarrie Are in there. For tackles there Are Jack manners Moe Simovitch. Gerry Deleeuw Paul Frederickson Bob Stewart of fort William ores Yak Mischuk Steve Shaw Jack Evanoff de Norvack Ron Corby Bill Ritchie. Bill Evans Al Passman and Joe King from the University of Manitoba varsity bosons. Harry Fitzgibbons Ron Vaccher Gord red Smith Gord Sturt Ridge Bud Korchak and import Bill Clawson Are the ends. Another import Johnny Gardiner will be the club s first string Quarter while Elton Hobson from last year s outfit Ted Lozanski end George Depres Are the other eligible. Backfield candidates Are Bob Sandberg Jim Foubister Harold Neufeld John Stroppa Jon Florence Gene Zakala Ian Gibb Vic Young Johnny Carpenter Don Smith Ernie Williams Norm Geller Joe Turner Paul Cholakis. Cam Miller Peter Petrow Rick Bergson and there is a possibility that Marv Bergson will be around for a while. That completes the list and it is from these boys Larson will have to pick his club. If you have been a keen football fan in the past and you Check these names carefully you will find that actually the bombers Aren t too badly off. Pickit up yardage congratulations to Huck Welch Junior relations committee chairman. He became the father of a football player wednesday. Maybe the youngster will grow up to be one Ocanada s Best kickers just like his father with Hamilton. Coach Larson caused a few eyebrows to lift at thursday s workout. He threw a few passes that were a work of Art. Someone told Johnny Gardiner that if Larson keeps that stuff up hell have to watch out. Imagine Winnipeg has t had a passer for years and Gardiner and Larson come along together. The set up at St. John s College and the olympic is really appreciated by coaches Larson and Doherty. Bombers Haven t missed a night of practice since the school opened july 5. When it Rains they go indoors at the olympic. Wonder when Larson will have the Complete squad out to one practice. Only half the Crew there thursday. Only 17 Days till train time. There will be no prac Tice monday.
