Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 03, 1949, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Face .16. Wednesday August Blue bombers accentuate youth we Don t know just How rugged the football in the Western conference is. Going to be this year. But after watching Frank Larson and Cam Duherty put the Blue bomber candidates through their paces last night we imagine a league match should be a lot of Iun for the boys fortunate enough to make the team. It sure in t going to be much tougher. And we re not fooling. We be been looking at football workouts around this town for quite a few years now and never before have we seen one quite so gruelling and Well organized. And we might add so enthusiastic. However even though All five american imports were on hand it still is our honest opinion that the bom Fiers will wind up no better than third in the league standing. But with that we Are conf they will be a much better third than the squad of 1948 which tied for second place and then lost out in the play off. The team this year is going to have an abundance of youth on the line up. There will be some Holdover veterans to be sure but Overall it will be a Young club. Probably one of the youngest Winnipeg has. Ever had. After looking Over the material with which he Lias prot to work with we Are sure coach Larson realizes he will earn the title of Canada s no. 1 Miracle Man if he can win the Western championship with it. However what we have seen of the quiet speaking and efficient or. Larson leads us to believe that he is a Down to Earth sort of a fellow who does t look for miracles. Still and All the bombers of 1949 might Surprise quite a few not excepting Calgary Regina and Edmonton. We think they will have a pretty Classy starting line up that will give a mighty Good account of itself. But the depth is missing. And that is where the Young players come in. If Only two or three of the juniors and intermediates who make the club should happen to develop after the fashion of some of the youngsters on Les Lear s Calgary club last year then the situation will be much brighter than we now anticipate. And it might turn out that Way because we believe that in Larson the bombers have a coach who will be Able to make footballers out of kids who at the moment really Don t know whether a football is blown up or stuffed to quote from ref Threlfall. The passing situation on this year s edition is definitely going to be Well taken care of by this lad Johnny Gardiner. We doubt if he can toss the Ball As far As Calgary s Keith Spaith but he certainly can pitch pm to a spot with quickness and accuracy that was somewhat of an Eye opener to this observer. And in his sidekick Bill Clawson he has a sure fingered receiver who can go and gather them in the ease and gracefulness of a Joe Dimaggio gobbling up a Fly Ball. Yes along the ground the bombers May be be found wanting somewhat but in the air we feel sure they la hold their own and then some with any team in the conference. Pc to a rain hrs. And there were about 500 of them on hand at tuesday night s Drill were extremely impressed with Mike Kissell and Wally Edwards the last of the imports to arrive in town. We think this fellow Kissell will be quite a Ball player. He does t look particularly big but they Tell us his playing weight is about 205 pounds. He owns a set of legs As powerful As any we be Ever seen. As a matter of fact we d venture to say his Gams Are As Eye appealing to the football Trade As Betty Grable s Are in the Field of feminine Beauty. By Bob the accent is on youth Winnipeg Blue bombers will Field an exceptionally Young team this year. Frank Larson made his first squad Cut of the season tuesday and there Are few old men left in the huddle. From a Crew close to 60 in number Larson backed his Way Down to 42. From that Point he will work club to a maximum of 36 within l in next week and less if need be. Tuesday s move was t too much of a Surprise. It s been known that bombers needed renovating and the Only Way they could to have something for the future was to build with youth. From Junior and intermediate ranks around the City there Are 18 names on Larson s list the youngest player left on the roster is Mike Cham who for another year1 of Junior Ball.1 for he oldest Honor you can toss a Coin be tween Jack Duke manners Moe Simovitch Norm Gelle r anal toe Turner. Working from the inside out on. The line the list follows centres Wally Edwards Doug Johnston Mot Simovitch. Guards Mike Ernie Ahoff Gord Perry Bud Irving. Jim Gerry Deleeuw Mike Cham. Tackles ores t Yakumis Chuk. Ai Passman de nor Vack. Paul Frederickson Ron Corby Jack manners Joe King. Ends Ron Vaccher Gord Sturtridge Harry Fitzgibbons Gord Smith Bill Clawson Bud Korchak. The Back Field quarterbacks Toh nov Gardiner George Depres. Ted Lozanski. San Iberg Man Bergson Don Smith Paul Cholakis Jon Florence John Stroppa Harold be life id Norm Geller. Johnny Carpen Ter Ian Gibb Gene Zakala. Joe Turner Vic i Oung Pete Petrow Cam Millar Biff Fliss. There Are seven members of last year s outfit who Nave been training fairly regular who won t be 4 pack. Bergson Jack Doanes Elton Hobson. Ernie Wlliams Ian Mctavish Jack Evanoff Ard George Mcquarrie Are the ones who were released tues Day night. In addition a promising Comer from fort William Bob Stewart will not be with the club this season. He figures it would t be Worth it to give up his Job at the Lake feed Lor football. There is a Chance he will give it a fling next year however figures. As for Young or. Edwards who is a 218 Pounder you be Only got to see the Guy throw a Block to know that he could probably Knock a Hole in the Amphitheater if he happened to be in the mood. On the whole it would seem the bombers Choice of imports this year has been Good. As we left the workout last night we were convinced of one thing. Things Are going to be harmonious in the Blue bombers Camp this year. Which will be quite a change to say the least. The University of Manitoba s athletic office will be without Frank Kennedy director of All Intra mural sports for a year. Frank who is one of those publicly Unsung Guys whre do much work with Little or no fanfare expects to put in the coming year in new York at. Columbia University finishing off his master s degree and getting in a few licks towards his u. Athletic director Wray Youmans and head coach of varsity football and basketball Acey Olson will be hard put to take up the Slack left by Kennedy s departure. Olson by the Way will return to the City sept. 1, on which Date bomber coach Frank Larson will have to get out of Olson s House and into his own quarters if he has any by then. Greetings Guys Bob Sandberg. Bill Clawson re Johnny Gardiner Art shown Here greeting fellow americans Mike Kissell and Wally Edwards As the inner two entered their first night of training under Blue bomber colors the arrival of Kissell and Edwards completes the bomber import roster.
