Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 05, 1949, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press at gust 5, 1949 Prairie crop it Rains improve feed Oli look in dry areas crops in Manitoba continue promising and the feed situation has improved in the dry areas o Western Saskatchewan and Central Alberta As a result of fairly Gen eral Rains during the past week the crop reports of the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railways stated Friday. Harvesting has begun in South Era Manitoba and within 10 Days it is expected to be Genera throughout most of the province end in Southern Saskatchewan. Northern Manitoba reports grains filling out satisfactorily with con. Foiled warm weather and Occa Gorial showers during the week some Leaf rust is reported around liver and Durban but As is not serious. Fairly general Rains during the have maintained crop pros pectin i Southeastern Saskatchewan. Some Rye has been swathed hut harvesting will not be Genera for another week to 10 Days. Warm weather is now required As there appears to be sufficient moisture to carry the crop through to maturity. Considerable improvement is apparent in Central Saskatchewan where Rains have varied from Light showers to heavy Rains according to . However there will Stilie a shortage of feed. Further Grasshopper damage is 1 reported in Southern and Western areas of Saskatchewan. The Centra regions have started harvesting i heat but it will be about two weeks before cutting is Genera in these areas. Crops in Northern Saskatchewan progressing Well although More warm weather is necessary for ripening. Late sown grains in Alberta appeared to improve As a result of Rains varying from one Quarter of an Inch to three inches according to one Survey. Best prospects Are reported from the North Central South Western and West Centra areas. In other areas of the province crops Are Only poor to fair the reports indicated. Hail damage was reported in areas of South Central Saskatchewan and South Central Alberta with losses from 75 to 100 in some localities. Rainfall Over the Edmonton area during the past two weeks has changed the Outlook there for the better and at least Farmers won t have to worry about the feed Situ Stion there the reports revealed. Good yields Are expected in the peace River country As the Situa Tion continues to show improve ment. Good demand for scant Supply on cattle Mart fresh receipts at the Union stockyards St. Boniface 9 . Fri Day consisted of 225 cattle 20 calves 50 hogs and 10 sheep and jambs together with 235 cattle showing up on through Billing. With a Lite Over 300 cattle the disposal of the various buying interests Sellers reported a fairly Good demand Lor the Short holdings in their pos i session and practically every j thing available was Well clean 1 de up on a steady to firm basis. Improved action has crept into ithe Market during the past Day or so following some curtailment of country loadings and prices have shown a tendency to firmer Levels. This was especially noticeable on cows and the better grades of stockers and feeders. There was practically nothing on hand Friday Good enough to sell within the higher Price brackets in ithe steer division of the Market. While Odd Small lots of suitable Slaughter steers traded from to 521, most the steers available to killers were of Quality and con bit Ion to earn from to buyers absorbed a limited num ber of real Good cows costing up to the Mark. In the Stacker and feeder i division anything approaching suitable Quality shared in a dependable outlet. The calf Market looked about in line with thursday s session.
