Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 17, 1949, Winnipeg, Manitoba Pag918 Winnipeg free press wednesday. August 17, 1949 Greys Blank year in and year out no other province in the Dominion Senc quite As Many players into the ranks of professional hockey a i Manitoba. We Haven t looked through the record Book of lat but the list is definitely a Long an illustrious one. Undoubtedly one of the Best in the last 15 years was the husky French Canadian Modere mud Bruneteau who for 1 years patrolled right Wing for Detroit red wings a native of St. Boniface who played his last Amateur Hocke for the Falcons of the old senior league mud has been spending the summer months Here with his wife and three children. W ran into him yesterday in the company of Tom Casey. Bruneteau s glittering career As a player ended three year ago. Since that time he has been coaching Omaha of the unite states professional league a farm club of Detroit. And according to reports he is making just As big a name for himself As Mastermind As he did when he was potting More than his Shar of goals for the wings. As a matter of fact he could be coaching i Indianapolis had he so desired but he requested to remain in Omaha when the Detroit front office sounded him out on the move a year or so ago. A a Bruneteau tells us he gets almost As much enjoyment out of his present Job As he Slid playing hockey. You he said there s a lot of satisfaction to be had in developing a Young hockey player and that s my Job in a a of course. Mud probably does t get quite As much thrill i turning out puck machinery As he did that night when he score the Only goal in the longest hockey game on record 176 min utes 30 seconds. It was in the season of 1936 in the Stanley cup Semi finals against Montreal maroons. Bruneteau fired the win Ning counter into the net at 16.30 of the sixth overtime period after taking a pass from Hec Kilrea. The match ended at 2.25 . Detroit eventually beat maroons and went on to win the Stanley cup. In this connection Bruneteau recalls a humorous Little Story. The year 1936 was a great one for the City of Detroi in the world of sport. The tigers won the baseball championship of the world Joe Louis became heavyweight Champion of the world while Detroit Lions were the Best in the Field of football a Victory dinner was tendered to Detroit s champions Anc for some reason probably because he broke up that gruelling hockey match against maroons Bruneteau was chosen to speak at the banquet on behalf of the red wings hockey club. When coach and manager Jack Adams told Bruneteau h would have to say a few words mud almost threw a fit. But i Don t know what to mud protested. Besides if i have to get to my feet in front of a big crowd of people i la faint. I just won t do he told Adams. Answered Jolly Jack it la Cost you 5100 Bucks Fine if you Don Bruneteau knew Adams would make the Fine stick so he meekly consented to speak at the gathering. Came time for Bruneteau to address the crowd which had massed to pay homage to their champions. Mud was introduced to the Assembly. He Rose slowly to his feet gulped slightly and then in the fastest of French spoke for about three minutes. Few in the crowd knew what i was talking said mud. Most of them just sat there with a Blank look on their 1 faces. But Bruneteau recalled laughingly the next Day the i papers gave me the headlines for a speech that nobody under stood. In his years the wings Bruneteau saw a lot of Good hockey players come and go. For his Money the Best to Wear Detroit livery during his 13 seasons with the club were Thompson goal Ebbie Goodfellow and Jack Stewart de Fence Larry Aurie right Wing Marty Barry Centre Herb Lewis left Wing. A pretty nifty team Don t you think As coach of the Omaha club today Bruneteau is quite Happy. He has no regrets on having chosen hockey As a career. The game has been Good to he said and i would recommend it to any Young fellow. If a boy wants to save his Moycey he can build up quite a. Nest egg even if he never gets out of the minor by Ted Bowles Brandon Greys completed their ast Winnipeg stand of the Mani Oba senior baseball league sche Dule in the same fashion As they started the Campaign with s. Vic tory. Tuesday Elmwood giants were the victims when they bowed 3-0 before fans under the lights at Osborne stadium. A pair of coloured performers Dirk Gibbons of Brandon and Amos Watson of the giants hooked up in what turned out to be tight pitchers Duel. Both went the route on the Mound and both allowed six scattered hits the first Frame being the Only time that either team banged out. More than one hit each squad getting two. The Greys opened the scoring in the first inning with a Singleton made it 2-0 in the fourth and added the last run in the fifth. Gibbons was never steadier for Brandon. All six hits he gave up were singles most of them in the infield while he failed to Issue a free ticket to first Watson worked hard and pitched Nice Ball but three of the hits he gave up were for extra bases. He walked three and struck out seven. Apart from the hurlers Steve Clarke in the Grey s right Field pasture stole the show. In the seventh inning and again m the eighth he pulled off spectacular plays. In the seventh inning he run in to the amphitheatre Wall in. Pulling Down Eddie Leier s Long drive and then in the eighth was the key Man in the Only double he hauled in Dick Roche s bid for a base Knock on the run and fired the Ball to first base to catch Marshall Boney Flat footed hustling to the initial sack. Coney Williams Brilliant bran Don shortstop was credited with the big triple blow to of the fixture a when he attempted a shoe string catch and rolled All the Way to the Centre Field stands. Rafe Cabrera and Armando Vas Quez each poled out a double Cabrera s bouncing off the left Field while Vasquez went to deep Centre. Despite the five errors four to Elmwood and one to game was Well played and a crowd please from Flag to finish. The Heads up Ball of the defending team when runners were on base left Little to be desired. No less than seven men were nipped on the paths in one Way or another the Greys picked off four giants and the giants three Greys. The huge crowd a near sellout was the largest of the current senior season. Braves Mentor accepts leave of absence Side times bitty South Worth Boston Cap Billy South Worth manager of the defending league Champion Boston braves tuesday night accepted a leave of absence for the rest of the season because of poor health. Announcement of Southworth s temporary withdrawal As Leader of the braves was made by president Lou Perini just before the Start of tuesday night s game with the third place new York giants. Perini said the team will be handled for the rest of the season by coach Johnny Cooney 48-year old Veteran National leaguer and one time braves Pitcher. Southworth his wife and Daugh Ter left for their Sunbury Ohio Home before the Perini announce ment. W w the braves Perini said believe it will be better to have a healthy Billy South Worth managing tie braves in the Spring than to have him so tax his physique and nerves now that he might not Ever recover he said Southworth will meet with club officials and coaches after the season ends to plan for 1950. The braves announcement said Southworth has been unable to sleep Well and has been eating irregularly and has been worried that his poor health might endanger the club s chances. He accepted Perini s proposal of a leave of absence and took off from Boston two hours before the braves called a press Confer ence to announce the change. Perini and general manager John Quinn expressed opinion that in insisting on Southworth s leave of absence they Are stacking six weeks of the 1949 season against Many years in the future and that in the braves plans for coming seasons this is a worthwhile move. The braves owners and general manager said they made their decision not merely by the desire to help plan for the club s future but. Much More so. To pro vide for the health and Well being of the Man who has contributed so much to the Success enjoyed by the braves in recent Billy who last year guided the tribe into their first National Lea gue Pennant in 34 years is expected to son his tribal regalia again next March at Spring train ing Quinn said. Southworth s present contract signed in 1947, has Lohree years to run at a reported annual salary of the braves tuesday night were in fourth place games behind the league leaders and a game and a half behind the new York giants. The 1949 season thus far has been disappointing to braves fans As their favourites stumbled in their efforts to repeat the 194s championship. As the team continued to lose ground in the Pennant race rumours spread of Dissen Sion among the defending champions. At the Start of the season a Boston newspaper age All in 4-0 win in Colvin who packs a Load of int m either foot was sure on the beam at Wesley Park tuesday night. The husky Centre Forward of fort Rouge legion smacked Home four goals while his team was blanking St. James legion 4-0. The defeat for the saints who have not been going very Well this season just about eliminates them in the race for a play off berth in the senior soccer championship. Colvin smacked Home two goals Billy Southworth columnist charged the players resented what the writer claimed was Southworth s habit of taking full credit for Winn ing the Pennant in 1948. That storm died Down As the season progressed but new reports of jealousy grew As the braves slipped further of the leaders. Southworth came to the braves from the St. Louis cardinals in 1945. He was signed during the Winter after both the braves and Billy obtained permission from the cards to discuss terms. The second year Billy the kid managed the he drove them from the second division into a third place berth. Last year he brought them to the top with a team Many experts claimed was t Good enough to do in the first half and added More in the second stanza. Two by Bob Enro Ute to Tidence strikes a High note As the Blue bombers head for their was Ern exhibition games. Everyone is taking it for granted the Clu will not have much trouble wit tigers but As for argonauts a though they respect the club which has proven a hard Rock to from the path of Winnipeg team in the past definitely do not Fea them.
