Investigation discloses that Gordon Learned the Art of getting out. Of the Gate fast in a hard school. He spent last Winter Riding Quarter horses at Phoenix and Yuma Arizona for Kenneth Kehl. Quarter horses Are animals possessing blinding Speed Over Short distance of ground with a Quarter of a mile being jus about their limit. Quarter races May be run anywhere from an eighth to a Quarter of a mile. A Ted won 12 races for Kehl for whom he was contract rider on Quarter horses. After talking to Ted the other Day about racing and Riding and Riding Quarter horses in particular it was easy to understand How and Why he had become so Good out of the Gate. He explained that most of the Quarter horses he Rode for Kehl were ii match races that is two horse races in which each owner puts up e specified sum with the Winner take All. He explained the slightest mistake Over he Short Dis Tance and the race is Over and you re beaten. There arc some purse races regular races in which a full Field runs for a purse but Many of the Best Quarter horses Don t enter them. There is More Money for a Man with a Good one in match As an indication of the kind of Money involved in Quarter horse racing it might be pointed out that the biggest race known was staged at Santa Anita in 1948 with a take All Stak put up. A horse named Barbara b whipped fair Truckle owner by c. S. Howard who had such Good runners As Scabis Cuit Over mile. Another top Quarter horse is the Pelican which is open to Challenge by any horse at mile. To Date he has had a Good percentage of winners clicking 15 winners out of a comparatively few number of mounts his first Canadian win was one Many Polo Park race goers will remember this Spring. Gordon was the rider on Brave commando when he paid s121.70 Here in the Spring. Incidentally the horse was running around the California fair circuit and up until a week or so ago has not been in the Money since. Sir Berrill s two length Victory in the Whittier Park sat urday came As no Surprise to horsemen. The Only surprises were the great run by Masterson to finish second Victory gift s Strong race in her second Start after being seriously Hurt at Toronto in the Spring and fort Garry s disappointing showing. The score probably would have been a Good Deal higher had both teams not been plagued wit Fumble itis. The disease took a particularly deep Root in the Elmwood squad who found no trouble what Soever in tossing the Oval into the arms of willing St. Vital receivers. It was the bulldogs ability to pounce on these Loose balls that gave them the margin of Victory. St. Vital opened the scor ing with a Singleton in the first Quarter when Art Kiel Rouge Joe Sanson on trunk Mer s kick Over the Elmwood goal line. In the second half Wimmer Agmi made the play for a St. Vital score when he tossed a pass from the Elmwood 35 to Ray Smith who took the Ball on the Elmwood 10 Yard line and stumbled Over for the touchdown. In the third Quarter St. Vital kept Elmwood pinned deep their own end. And it appeared Only a matter of time until they would add to their score. The Reg ular number of fumbles did t help Elmwood any in getting out of the Shadow of their goal posts and finally Wimmer hoofed another Over the bombers goal line Jim Elrick routing Tom Peterson on the play. Elmwood showed definite improvement in the final Quarter and began by carting the Ball into the St. Vital end where they had a Good Deal of play. They had Possession on the is. Vital 10 at one time but lost the Ball when two passes went astray. The bulldogs definitely established themselves As the team to beat with their latest Victory.
